- Janet replies to Puppy PalJust got a call from them also. 555-1212 is the universal information number. You just type in the area code for where you want and then 555-1212 and should be able to get the phone number for the person or business you want in that area. You can also do the same for 800 numbers and I was assuming for 866 numbers. So this really made me suspicious when a call comes IN from what I assume is an "information" number.
- GranMoMOk recieved this call on my cell phone. Yep it is on the do not call list. Recorded canned message about a Fat Loss survey. I hung up. Blech!

- Ohio woman| 1 replyI got a call at about 11am today from 866-555-1212. Read out on caller ID "Not Provided". I did not answer and they didn't leave a message. When I called the number I got a recording:
"I'm sorry you have reached a number that is disconnected or not in service"
A few minutes later I got a call from 678-398-4832 "Georgia Call". I did not answer and no message left. When I called back I got a busy signal.- Caller: unknown
- TeresaI am on every DO NOT CALL list there is and file complaints with the FCC with every phone call I get. The FCC writes back and says there is not enough information! You would think that with ID theft being the #1 crime now they would get on the ball. That's the gov't at work for you.
- Caller: unavailable
- Fed UpCalls received at 9:35 a.m. on 8/3/10 from 1-866-555-1212. Oddly enough, the two phones I have with different phone numbers each rang simultaneously from this same number. I only picked up one and no one was there. There was a garbled 'thank you for calling' robo-message on the voice mail of the second phone.
I know that 866 is a toll-free prefix just like 800. Also, back in the pre-Internet days, cities had their very own directory assistance operators that you could speak with by dialing that city's area code followed by 555-1212. (For example, (312) 555-1212 would get you to a live directory assistance operator located in Chicago.)
Lastly, Caller ID Spoofing allows the telemarketers/scammers to hide their real information behind a fake phone number. This is obviously someone who pays to use a spoofing service so they don't get caught.
If anyone asks you for personal information, especially to 'verify' your bank account number or your social security number, NEVER give out that information! They are not who they claim to be, and they will clean out your account and/or steal your identity!
If you are receiving non-stop calls from this fake number, try calling your phone's service provider and ask them if they can block this fake number from your phone.- Caller: unknown
- BBShowed up on caller ID, no message. You call back, number cannot be reached.
Clearly, these jerks need to go to prison.
But the bigger problem is that Congress lacks the backbone to regulate this kind of thing. Do us a favor, put these people out of business and prevent them from ever having phone service again. And change the technology so that instead of "the number cannot be reached," make it so we can tie up their lines for hours.
P.S. I keep a whistle by the phone, which is handy when you get a live [***] on the line.- Caller: unk

- AnonymThis is a computer generated call. Do not answer.
- Brad replies to Ohio womanI got a "Georgia Call" from 770-555-0118 asking for my wife and if she went to Pep Boys,I answered yes since the phone number appeared local. She did get her oil changed at Pep Boys last weekend so I called the number back and it rang busy so I tried a reverse phone lookup and it listed the call coming from Directory Assistance Georgia.Other lookups listed that the phone # was not in use.I immediately called Pep Boys and they stated that they would not call a customer back unless there was a complaint or scheduled service coming up so it appears that PEP BOYS HAS BEEN HACKED too as how would someone unknown to us know that my wife who used her debit card had gone there unless they worked for Pep Boys or the Bank in which neither is the case.We immediately had her Bank card cancelled. It is obvious that they are crooks and scammers spoofing their calls.
