If you have received phone call with a muffled recording asking you to press 1 to accept a collect call from a jail, you are probably the victim of a prison inmate phone scam. Some victims have reported calls billed to their phone from Correctional Billing Services (run by the company, Securus). Some of these calls originated in prisons, such as the Geauga County Jail. Last year in Florida, a group of inmates made $50,000 worth of calls billed to unsuspecting residents who never even accepted the calls.

According to a report citing Curtis Hopfinger of Securus, "It appears there was some fraudulent activity at the facility by one or more inmates that, for lack of a better term, 'tricked' the telephone system into billing calls" to victims. Securus contracts with jails to provide telephone service to inmates.

Another scam occurs when victims accept a collect call from an inmate and then follow then inmate's request to make another call on their behalf that involves dialing a sequence of numbers that includes *-7-2. That starts a call-forwarding service. The call-forwarding scam basically turns control of the victim's phone line over to the inmate.

If you think you have been wrongly billed for collect calls from jail or for long-distance calls, contact the company listed on the bill. If they refuse to reverse the charges, contact the phone company and the Better Business Bureau. Consumers should also contact the jail where the call originated as well, because deputies would want to open their own investigation to determine if a scam is being run out of a jail.

Received numerous calls to my land line from this number trying to get me to accept the 'free' call from an inmate.  Calls occurred the week of 1/10/11.  The one time I was home to take the call, I followed the prompts to dismiss the call and block any future calls to my number.

Hey, my brother was in jail for a few days... I got him out last night.  Today, I also recieved a recording on my voice mail that was broken and impossible to understand.  It is not the service from Dallas county jail.  I dont believe its a legit company.  Like I said he got out last night and so he didnt place the call.  Welcome to the technological scam of the day...

everyone should just complain to fcc and maybe this company will get shut down

This number hasbeen calling me every half hour for days and all day sunday.  Reported to national do not call hotline. All I could find out was that it was from San Jose, CA.  No one talks when I answer

i got 7 calls from this number. i ignored it the first few times, then i finally answered it after the 6th call and found out that it was my boyfriend calling me from the detention center. i tried to accept it, but they told me i had to set up a pre-paid account, so i hung up & called tech support to have the number blocked because i cannot recieve collect calls on my phone. hopefully i don't get charged for it because i wasn't even put through. they told me i had to make a payment first.

3 calls so far from this 888-506-8407 asking to accept a call from Floyd Baxter in the Baltimore County Jail.. whoever Floyd Baxter is related to, get your man. Sounds like a personal problem Floyd. i'm using my Android call block app to get rid of the calls.
