A woman with a South American accent calls me, apparently claiming to be from my electric company. She cites my full name and home address. She tells me that I haven’t applied a discount, so since a certain day in January, I’ve been getting charged 3% more on my electricity bill each month. She says I need to meet certain conditions to stop being charged the extra fee. I let her speak to see what it’s all about.

When I realize she’s trying to get me to confirm my information and say “YES,” I contradict her by saying that I don’t have any utility bill in my name and that my landlord pays for the electricity and all the bills.

She seems a bit thrown off and immediately hangs up.

It looks like she was trying to get me to say “YES” so they could record it and use it to sign me up for something or collect my personal data.
