Just a note to those who wondered about where these companies get your numbers from. It depends on what company wants the research. Most of the time, the company themselves have given the contact details.

How do I know? I work for one of these market research companies, but not this one.

If you don't want to answer the surveys, then just say so and you won't be bothered about the survey again.

Good advice. But they're not as honest as you. They just keep calling and going through their sugging routine. So annoying!

The last thing I expected when I answered the phone at 8:44pm on Sunday evening (01/05/11)was a market research call from something like 'GFK' (02078909052). I pointed out that I was TPS registered and the caller said that didn't apply in this case. Well we'll see what TPS have to say about that won't we?! Report en route shortly.

    RESPONSE TO MY EMAIL:

Thank you for your enquiry with regards the Telephone Preference Service (TPS).  You were concerned that you had been contacted by telephone as you are registered to the TPS.

The purpose of the TPS is to screen unsolicited direct marketing calls.  Market research is not, under the current UK Data Protection Act 1998, classed as direct marketing; therefore, there is no legal requirement to screen market research samples against the preferences services when conducting market research.  The reason for this exemption is that market research meets the conditions:

    a)      that the data are not processed to support measures or decisions with respect to particular individuals, and

    b)      that the data are not processed in such a way that substantial damage or substantial distress is, or is likely to be, caused to any data subject.

Section 33, Paragraph 1, UK Data Protection Act 1998

GfK NOP is bound by the Market Research Society’s (MRS) Code of Conduct, the emphasis of which is on respondent confidentiality; in addition, we take our obligations under the UK Data Protection Act very seriously.  If you require further information on the application of the data protection requirements within market research you can view the MRS Society’s own guidelines “The Data Protection Act and Market Research” available on their website at: http://www.mrs.org.uk/standards/dp.htm#dpa98.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused. I will add your number to our 'do not call' list which will prevent you from receiving further calls from our company.

    Very Kind Regards

    Lindsey Betteridge
    Quality Manager

The company has called now twice, first time they said they were from GFK and next they were The Chief Executive of  Learning & Skills, both appear to be valid companies but obviously up to no good with this kind of phone call, perhaps they are hiding their true identity and as so many people are concerned there is obviously a good enough reason not to get envolved with answering any questions. The simple thing to remember is only give details to someone you call and not a complete stranger, you wouldn't do it anywhere else so why do it on the phone.

Missed a call on my mobile from this shower last night,
I NEVER give my mobile number out as it's my own personal phone so how the heck did they get hold of it? If they call again and I answer I am going to demand to know where they got my information and boy am I going to give the orginators a piece of my mind!
I am registered with TPS but personally everytime I contact hem I get fobbed off so don't know why I bothered registering.

OK, this is a genuine market research company BUT.
Your number isn't just random number dialed as claimed. The number is obtained from a database in connection with a recent service, or product purchased where you associated your phone number with this product. If they dial your number they already have information about you, although the operator may not actually have this in front of him.
This information IS used for market research but also stored and referenced by other orginisations paying for more specific information.
Recommendation. NEVER pass personal information, trneds, or paterns no matter how trivial where the "survey"  associates with ANY tracable details. (and that includes your IP address when you connect)

Yeah something about GFK Market research and maybe something about an energy company. Asked if I could spend some time giving my opinions on stuff. Said, sure. They asked if I had a line land said no. Asked my age, said 17. They said I was too young and asked if they could call back some other time, I said don't bother and hung up.

Got  a call from 02078909052, who told me that I was on record as having completed a GCSE at my local college in 2008 and would I like to take part in a short survey.  The person on the phone said that they were employed by the college.  I  said "no" and put the phone down as we are registered with the TPS and was a little bit suspicious, as I thought it had taken the college a long time to ask me for a survey (3 years!).

After reading the other comments on the 'who calls me website', I am disgusted to find out that this actually a sales and marketing company GfK NOP, UK) who blatantly use deception to get information out of people. Surely this is fraudulent and therefore illegal.

I received a call from 02078909052 @16:37. A nasal female voice with an accent or with a speech defect said that they were calling on behalf of HSBC. She said what they were, but because of her unclear speech I failed to understand it. More likely it was GFK because later she said about some sort of survey. For start I asked her what was an issue of her call and why she was calling to me on Sunday. Anyway I would not like to give a full script of a short conversation with her but she mentioned something about recent complaint in relation to HSBC and I replied what it was nothing to do with third party. She said sorry and this unwanted by me conversation was over.
I do not understand why they disturb people on Sundays or on Saturdays. Also I do not understand why personal contact details are disclosed to third parties which is contradict to Personal Data Privacy and Security Act of 2009
I definitely did not give a permission to disclose my personal contact details or any of my personal details to third parties.
