I too have been called (2 missed calls on my mobile, and 1 call taken breifly on my works number,  it could well be genuine but given that they were asking for validation of my security stuff, and there refusal to give an idea as to what their call was concerning I told them I would not discuss any details.

I shall await to see if I get anything through the post (or via online banking messages) to confirm that the call was legit but will not accept any further calls unless they can say what the call is concerning.

I got called from 08007838422. They said they were HSBC, but it sounded like someone from a long way away, and I was suspicious as they asked me for security information without saying what it was about. I refused to give it. I said I would ring back later.

I rang HSBC later, who then verified that somebody from HSBC had tried to ring me! I said, in that case, I'd like to register a complaint about the way I was rung. I said there were plenty of people on the internet who are saying that they believe it is a scam when they are rung from this number, and that if this is the way they are trying to approach their customers, then they had better come up with a better way!  I felt my complaint was falling on deaf ears.

I've always had a pretty good relationship with HSBC, so am very disappointed about their attitude.

Believe it or not, this number is HSBC's Credit Services Department which seems to be a call centre located in India. I have an account with HSBC and they ring me constantly when I am overdrawn. The trouble is they speak with very strong accents which often sound like a mixture of Indian and American and I can't understand a word they say. When you ring them you get through to the same call centre and it's a very hard to understand them.

I have written to HSBC asking for them communicate with me in writing as their call centre is just too difficult to communicate with. Amazing that a large institution runs their business like this, particularly as they claim to be the "World's Local Bank"!!!

i keep getting calls from this number- twice a day, once in the morning and once at 4 in the afternoon, this has been going on for about a week now

I answered the other day and they claimed to be HSBC business banking care line in leicestershire UK or something like that. I told them i couldn't speak at that time and to ring me in the evening, but they didn't and it has since reverted back to once in the morning and once in the afternoon.

I would ring HSBC and ask if it was them and if so complain about there business practise however i don't really want to talk to an indian i can't understand!!

I have had numerous calls from the number 0800 783 8422 and have put the phone down every time as I believed it to be a scam where I would be charged horrendous amounts of money if I was on the phone too long. Having read this and discovered it is actually HSBC calling me, I am very disappointed and concerned that I am contacted in this way. The people that contacted me also sounded very far away and had an accent that I couldn't fully make out. I am not happy about being contacted in this manner and cannot understand why I am not contacted by post or if the call is urgent then my home number can be rung or if I miss the call then a message could be left asking me to ring HSBC. I also would like to speak to staff that work in this country and not abroad as I would like to be able to understand the person I am speaking to and also know that they could understand me and answer competently any questions I may have.

I've been getting calls from this number for the past week.  I answered once, stupidly gave them my DOB, and they told me my mastercard was £5.01 over the limit and I was to pay it right now.  Knowing that wasn't the case, as I'd just paid it a week previously and I knew what the balance was, Itold them I wouldn't do anything without seeing a statement.  She continued to try and force me to pay by credit card (uh?) or by bank transfer over the phone then and there.  I said no, and she asked why.  I told her I hadn't been using the card, and was paying it off, and I didn't believe it was over the limit.  I wouldn't do anything without a statement.

Oddly, I've received no letter re: my account being over the limit.  I received a statement the day after that call, which was dated to 4 days before the call.  It again confirmed that the balance she was telling me was not the balance I actually have.  Then the calls started again, after I thought I'd told her once I saw a statement I'd take care of whatever the problem was.  These people are calling me up to _20 times a day_.  I've been ignoring it, until today, when totally fed up after a conversation with Parcel Force, I decided to answer and take out my anger on them.  I told her it was boarding on harassment and that I would be taking this up with my solicitor employer.  She muttered something I couldn't understand and hung up on me.

No further calls as of yet, but it's only been an hour.

I really have no idea what is going on.  I feel this is a scam, but so many people say they've called them and that it really is HSBC.  But the fact that she wouldn't give me her name or the number where she was calling from still concerns me..

that number just called me (29/11/07 @ 19:40) i had a missed call earlier in the week 2, she had my name and wanted to get a few personal details of me before she could continue the call, i refused to give details, she then said i can ensure u that im from HSBC and she jus needed a few details like post code and my DOB, i again refused saying that i dont want to over the phone, and that she could be anyone, she then said ok if thats wat u wish and put the phone down. I checked my accoount online and everythin seems ok.

it was indian/american voice i myself am a british indian

if that really was HSBC then they really need to sort themselves out, if i get a call like that again im going to open a new account (lloyds/barclays etc) and leave HSBC.

I just received this message (on this number) from the 'fraud prevention team' at hsbc, to call the number 08456081878 and quote D1. It isn't a random scam since they knew my full name. Still, it could be someone who has intercepted mail or something. I called the number and it does sound like HSBC and they asked how they could help me. I said I just received a message to my mobile asking me to call this number. He said OK please tell me your sort code and account number. And I'm like, no, I can't find your phone number on HSBC website and I'm not giving you any details until you can convince me otherwise. So I'm about to call them and see what happens...

Ok, called the main HSBC help line and they confirmed fraud prevention had tried to contact me and put me through to them. They wanted to go over some tranasctions (had done a lot of xmas shopping last night online!) They all were my transactions. So that's ok, the phone number is genuine.

People may do copy cat things though, so I recommend to go to HSBC website and ring the general help number and get transferred!

I just received call from 08007838422. They told me that they calling from HSBC bank and asked my security digits. I told me that I will not tell them my security information and asked what do they want from me. They told me that they can't tell me that, but if I can call back to HSBC using 0800130130 number and they will tell me what they want from me. So, I checked on the web and make sure that 0800130130 is HSBC well advertised number and call there. They told me that they have no information for me. Then I asked them if I should report to police about call from 08007838422, but they told me that I should not do it.

This is my second post here, because today I have received second call from 08007838422. Sally Cristal told me that she is calling from HSBC, but she can't tell me what does she want from me unless I tell her my postcode. I ask her if I can call her back to make sure that I'm really talking to HSBC. She told me to call telephone number that is written on top of my HSBC maestro card 08457404404. Once I called this number I have discovered that I indeed has been contacted by HSBC from LOAN department. I has never applied for any loans. I ask them who exactly stand behind this loan request. It turned out that 2 mount ago I was talking about getting VISA card, but once I discover that this is credit card (unlike my current VISA debit card from another bank) I lost my interest in that product.

I hope that they have received all answers from me and they will not call me back again.

Same as most of the above: unsolicited call from Asian male - claimed to be from HSBC, asked for postcode and dob + refused to say what it was about.  Naturally, I refused to give the details - as he could't verify his identity.  Same thing also happened about a week ago.
Extremely shoddy practice, if it really is HSBC!  Given the amount of data recently lost by the government - could have been anyone!

Indian call centre worker arrested for HSBC fraud
A worker at HSBC's Bangalore call centre has been arrested on suspicion of selling the confidential bank account details of UK customers to fraudsters.

Data worker Nadeem Kashmiri, 24, has been charged with hacking into computers and breaching confidentiality agreements and privacy laws.

According to press reports around £233,000 was stolen from the accounts of 16 UK customers after Kashmiri allegedly sold bank details to fraudsters while working at the centre in Bangalore.

The fraud was detected by internal systems at the call centre, which had been in place since 2002.

A spokesman for HSBC told reporters that all affected customers had been notified and refunded and the bank intends to "pursue a conviction as aggressively as possible".

But the incident raises new fears about the security of customer data at offshore centres and follows a number of high-profile breaches last year.

In June a call centre worker in India allegedly sold the bank account details of 1000 British customers to an undercover reporter working for UK daily tabloid The Sun, while in August, an undercover investigation by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's (ABC) Four Corners programme has found that call centre workers in India are offering to sell personal financial records held in the databases of Australian companies.

Earlier in the year, three former employees of Indian BPO firm MphasiS were arrested for allegedly siphoning off $300,000 from Citibank customers after stealing account details while working at an offshore call centre in India.
