Their email to me contained the following scare-mongering rubbish:

118 Information is the UK's central agency for business directory information, updating the listings you see in the phone book, on the web and on most of the 118 directory enquiries services.

and ...

We have not been able to confirm your phone book entry, and your business/organisation has been marked as 'closed' in our database. This means that your details will no longer be included in the phone book and other directories.

This company has called my e-receptionist service over 10 times, each occassion refusing call back details.  The activity has cost me £10 so far.  I tried calling the company on the number that showed on the caller ID, no answer.  On researching this site I found another number to call them on.  On doing so, I was asked WHY, I wanted my details removed from their database in a very unpleasant manner .  I was not impressed.  I will be reporting the company on the link you provided.  Thank you.

118 Information is a genuine data house and collects data for 118118 bt and yell among others, I know this because I have used their services

I've seen in increase in the amount of SPAM I'm receiving.  This to my named account and not a generic sales account.  After wasting time digging I've traced this back to 118information.co.uk.  The response I go t me complaint is:

I have looked in to the complaint and have found the following.

We contacted your business 23/06/11 & spoke with *****, ***** provided us with a contact name & email.

We then contacted your business again 20/06/12 & spoke with *****, ***** confirmed all of the information was still up to date including the senior contact details (name & email).

After the calls were made a confirmation email including our terms of use was sent to mark.mair@skibo.com, in our terms of use it states that if you do not wish your details to be passed on for marketing purposes to click the relevant box – This box was not ticked.

They claim to send out and opt-out email and if you don't respond their T&Cs claim the right to pass on i.e. sell your details to 3rd parties.  The ICO is very clear about consent being cleat and explicit, not merely implied by not opting out.

Also unless you agree to trade with them, their T&Cs are irrelevant.

They are the source of much of the SPAM that is generated.  The ICO need to hit them very hard with a substantial fine.

I too have had a call today from them, updated my details and changed my category.

They didn't ask for any personal data other that already know, such as business name address & phone number.

So simply ask them to take you off their list if your not a business.

I have tracked back several SPAm bombarders to this - it  was 3 levels down too ie sold on and on
I avoid all this stuff normally but got caught by "a free co. listing",  2 years ago - a condition of the free listing, it turns out, is they harvest and distribute your email address

Received a call from this number last week, thought it seemed strange that she requested a personal email instead of my business one, been sent an email to confirm my details. When you hit the link your sent to a strange pink 118 information webpage to confirm your details. Haven't confirmed anything as I suspect it isn't legitimate.

Were calling to update your free bus listings for directory enquiries, direct marketing and online search. So is your address..

The thing is they need 2 emails. 1 for the general email where in it gets posted in the directories so that the public can email you, and second is the DIRECT EMAIL which will not be published , its just so that they can send a confirmation email, and to make sure that it gets directly to the MOST SR CONTACT.

I got a call the other day, within days of that ive started to get a whole series of marketing calls, all of them have my full details, not just my business name.

He is the company MD for this 118 Information said can always send letters to be taken off their system.

got an email supposedly from 118 - checked the number 0121 355 8600.and it appears to be a scam.

Giving them your details will fill your inbox with SPAM = Vile Pink Pig Meat

Wow, what a pushy unpleasant salesperson. Kept saying they provide data for every directory. And qualify for google. Cannot believe that. Avoid like the plague
