The only way to avoid this kind of thing is not to agree to anything. Easier said than done I know, but its the only way they can actually change your supply.

These companies must provide suppliers with a verbal recording of the contracts, however this is an unregulated act which means that it is susceptible to all sorts of tampering (sound editing, recording being switched on and off etc).

My job used to be registering these very sales brokers that have been mentioned, Lily Palmer, Select Energy, Benjamin Dexter. The lot of them. The only reason that they are allowed to act on the behalf of major energy firms is that for every 1 person that complains, there are 20 that dont. The energy companies are more than happy to live with that ratio because more often than not that 1 person can be appeased.

With regards to Lily Palmer she works for a company called Billscutter. Their activities have been highlighted in the past but it isnt possible to nail them down because verbal contracts only have the validation and not the whole call. This means that often they promise the world.

Another tactic they use is getting someone to agree a contract, saying the original energy company has rejected the contract due to a credit rating and getting them to agree to another company. They then send off both agreed contracts thus increasing their chances of the account 'going live'.

As long as there are loose rules regualting this particular part of the industry there are always going to be loopholes for Billscutter to exploit.

Unfortunately there are a lot of trusting people out there who are going to be sucked in.

    I hope this post helps.

I will check back regularly if there are any questions that people have with regards the inner workings of supplier contracts.

    I'm quite knowledgeable ;P

Thanks for that. I actually got a call from Opus today cancelling my contract, I have sent emails and been in touch with ombudsman etc. I have all the recordings of 48 calls within 2 hours with 7 witnesses, lol, bet thats why they let my so called contract go. It has been so stressful, going to the police tonight to charge the brokers used, and I cannot wait, been called a scottish cow and all sorts. ha ha going nail these baskets hopefully.

I've had numerous call likewise, now I've got my iPhone and recorder out ready and the first thing I ask for is their company name, website (handy to have google to hand), ask them to hold (which is just the phone just dropped in the corner!) then look them up, take down their address and go back to them, first thing to do is ask if they're a broker, if they say no then ask for their invoicing details, which usually throws them, then explain that all calls are recorded and I charge a £5 a minute consultancy fee for the details of my utlities to support their consumer database, and that recording will start..... now. Phone hangs up pretty quickly in most most cases! and don't call back, when they don't I keep reminding them of the time and that they might want to let their manager know in case of excessive billing that might occur. It helps that there was a case in court recently where a guy charged £10 a minute and recorded all calls for evidence and won, so now I can quote a case precedent if they feel like telling me I can't do that, I'm sure most brokers will have heard about this at a senior level and warned team leaders etc. It's a bit childish and long winded I know but it does get a bit funny as long as you can hold your nerve- and tongue- and is nice little bit of revenge.

Had 20 calls from this number in one day, bloody nightmare! Rude call staff and the manager isn't much better. I heard from my energy broker they try to call as many times as they can so they can use recorded snippets of your call to create high priced energy contracts, be careful what you say!

The post below is incorrect, Please do not confuse select energy and commercial power. Select Energy is not connected to commercial power/commercial energy.

    Good Contact
These Guys have been aggressively selling/miss-selling and miss-handling consumer Data for years.

They Buy data from various sources including:
    .Thompson
.Royal Mail (When you register to change address)
    plus various others

Director and very much head office backroom staff is Kailey Smith
Share holder and Partner to Kailey is Chris Palmer .....who oversees the sales staff.
    Stephen Nightingale...Sales Manager
    The several highly aggressive saleman/women

    Tatic:

To sell N-power/Opus contracts at 25% ish percent above the national average over a 36 month period (this gives them higher rate of commission from the supplier RWE Npower) there common tactic is to tell you that you are on out of contract rates (sometimes reffered to as Deemed rates) because you have just moved in.

When you refute this and tell them you have already sorted you supplier they will them tell you that they are a company who deals with the change of supply for all suppliers (NOT TRUE AND NO SUCH BODY EXISTS)  and that the supply has failed to go through on this occasion. This simply is not true. They will then try to get you to sign with Npower or Opus stating these are either the cheapest or MOST COMPETITIVE in the area.

    Again absolute rubbish

You are Ok as long as you dont go through a recorded part of the call with them.If you have you MUST contact you existing supplier ASAP and tell them to "OBJECT TO THE SUPPLIER TAKING OVER THE SUPPLY" (either Npower or Opus) But you must act quickly to do this.

You can also raise complaints with chris billing (head of indirect sales RWE npower) about this company.
Also if you are contacted more than once a day by them you can register a complaint with the ICO
    http://www.ico.org.uk/complaints/marketing
    http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/number_type.html

The best advice i can give you is that if any company calls to tell you that your supply has not gonr through correctly or you are on Out of contracted rates is to give them the dial tone and ring your supplier and they will sort out all issues with out costing you an arm and a leg.
