- DuncanI've had repeated calls from this number, many missed but at least 4 I have answered. I was told the were caling from "Consumer Credit Services" regarding compensation claims for Payment Protection Insurance (PPI).
I aksed them where they got my number from and was told on at least 2 occassions that it was from national database of mobile telephone numbers (i.e. a computer systematically auto-dials all the potential numbers in the UK). I told them on two occasions that I had already looked into claiming compensation for PPI (*see below) and asked to be removed from their database. Both times they said they would take me off the database (the second time taking my name and asking very clearly if I wanted to be removed, to which I answered "Yes", before telling me it would take 24hrs to process the removal).
They clearly still have not removed me from their list, as I'm still getting calls. When they called today, I imediately told the guy that I'd asked to be taken off their randomly generated list. He insisted that I'd been mis-informed and that they only call people with particular financial circumstances relating to PPI (i.e. my number had been targeted rather than randomly generated). I tried to explain that it did not matter whether this was the case, since I had stated several times very clearly that I did not want their services, because I'd already investigated the matter thoroughly and found that the amount of money I was likely to be able to reclaim was not, in my opinion, worth it. I told him that it was my belief that in not removing me from their database they were in breech of the Data Protection Act 1984 and that if they did not remove me and I continued to get calls that I'd make a formal complaint to the Information Commissioner.
He still didn't take no for an answer, and continued to ask incredulously whether a £199.99 fee was indeed not worth it in order to claim 'thousands of pounds' in compensation - clearly not believing that I had investigated the matter thoroughly. He continued to press his point that I was being unwise in not taking up the opportunity to claim compensation. This stranger was arguing with me trying to tell me he knew better and effectively accusing me of being stupid for not letting him sell me his services. I tried to explain that it was entirely my decision whether or not to pursue the matter, no matter what his opinion was. He then asked if I was a trained solicitor, pressing the point still further! As I was in mid sentance repeating my assertion that I did not want their services, he cut me off.
There are a number of companies out there trying to make business off the back of some legal case or ruling which has identified that many PPI packages that were sold to pepole as part of a credit card or loan deal before 1997 were mis-sold or charged excessive fees. This is all well and good for those who have fallen into this trap and ended up paying too much, and I can't blame anyone for trying to claim the money back. Regretably I filled in a few online surveys a few months ago when I was investigating ways to save money. I received a claim pack from another, aparently reputable firm of solicitors, and used it to investigate whether it was worth following up on this. Naturally I was cautious about paying up front fees etc unless I was reasonably sure there was a good chance of a decent return. I even talked it through with an advisor from said reputable firm and came to the informed decision not to pursue a claim.
Now I'm willing to accept that if I fill in an online survey I will probably get marketing calls, but I think it's entirely reasonable that if you tell them once you're not interested, they should accept it not continue to call. To do so is at best agressive marketing and at worst harrassment. I am doing what I can to investigate this mob so I can lodge a formal complaint with the authorities, and urge you all to do the same. At the very least we should all get onto BBC Watchdog and get them on the case.- Caller: Consumer Credit Services
