If this number is a genuine Police call and they need to speak to you, they will leave a message.

I received a call from this number and it was Lambeth police and they left a message and I rang back and got the officer I wanted. You can't reply to calls on this number though

It`s a ghost number created to call from a phone number that would normally be shown as `withheld`, so may well be generically used by the police for this purpose, but I don`t know if it is unique to them, or would be used by other organizations who request ghost numbers for this purpose

It is the police.
I was called in the middle of the night and didn't get to the phone on time. When I tried to ring back it said the number is not recognized. However, I knew it was the police because I was expecting a follow up call from an incident that happened a few hours earlier.

I had a missed call from this number...  Looked on here to see who it could be.... I had an incident earlier where the police were involved... I'm gonna assume it was the police! Thanks

Had a call from this number asking for my address etc, he didnt sound like a police officer he said he is based in bow control centre and when i asked him if he was a police officer he went what does a police officer sound like, my respone i dont know and he got all excited shoutong exactly exactly down the phone to me and hung up. doest sound like the police to me who is he?

To dial an external phone number police put the number '9' then a phone number. This will show on your phone as a private number.
If the officer uses '1848' and then a phone number to dial out, then it shows on your phone as 0208 780 4180. This will happen from any police station in the Met Police, which is why it has come up for Chingford, Lambeth, Acton and any other police stations.

Had a call just now gone past midnight. Although I was a witness to a serious accident couple of weeks ago it could be the police but who in their right mind would call me after midnight

This IS the Police.  In my case it was Kentish Town Police, but it seems it could be any police stn in London, using this number as an identifier because some folk don't pick up when the caller ID is not showing.

You can NOT call the number back tho, whic is pretty cheeky/sneeky.  Just what you'd expect from the Rozzers !

This number is the one I was given in 2014  I reported xa crime. The crime was reported in Wandsworth.  I kept the number on my oh one.  In 2017 the number came up again as I rooted another crime in 2years later. Apparently it us a Hendon call centre manned by civilians 's to manage the huge volume if calls needed to be made. It can also be used by vindictive officers to harass you but the caller does not realise this as they are only doing their job presumably.  So if this service is misused it can be an  irritant  to say the least. It ticks the boxes on the other gand where the police can say they tried several times to get hold of you but all the calling us done by the call centre in Hendon.  The police can then get on with policing  presumably.

i did not answer it originally as no name showed up but got a text shortly after asking me to call a named DC on another number regarding an incident I witnessed & reported to them. Also, had a missed call from a previously saved Met. Police number.
