- EileenA guy called Mark (with a strong Indian accent) rang today from 'help for windows company' in albert street north Sydney with a similar story to the others listed. After him trying to convince me to turn on my computer for 15 minutes & me refusing, he told me that I didn't even have a computer & was wasting his time!!! He was not able to tell me what the 'infectious file' was called that my computer had downloaded, but was convinced that he could fix it, even though no anti virus program could identify it.. He told me my address & that he would make me pay for the call...

- carolHad a call from same number. Her name was Sylvia Fisher. I asked her why I keep getting these calls almost everyday and told her it was a scam. She disagreed and gave me an address and phone number. I just said I will call her back. When I got a call the other day I just said I dont have a computer what are you talking about and they just hung up.

- LesleyAlso had a call same as all the above. Was shown the red errors and yellow triangle. I was suspicious but had let them in to scan so am hoping that my PC is OK and it was money that they were after. When they wanted payment of $149 this is when I refused to pay over the internet. They still gave the same telephone number and North Sydney address. Same story 40% of PC in my area had been infected! Names were Sylvie and Ricky Fisher.
Does anyone know of a reputable company to check my PC?- Caller: Help4windows

- JeremyThis situation is ridiculous! I just got a call from an Indian woman, with a really bad accent, it was so thick and her english was so poor that I could barely understand a word she was saying. Straight away something was wrong because they called me on my home phone number and I have only just got it setup and never given it to anyone yet. The only people who know it is my ISP, which makes me very concerned. She said all the same stuff not a virus, but something on my Windows computer needed to be fixed and they were fixing everyones in my area. I said "Really, everyone with Windows!, that millions of people, how can you do that?" she also said I didn't need to be connected to the internet which is a little bit different to everybody else's story. I didn't trust her... how did she know I had Windows? or get any of my details? She said she didn't work for Windows or Microsoft, I yelled at her "Well then who do you work for?" HelpForWindows. I had never heard of it, and had heard about these scams where they call up and get you to give them access to your computer. I demanded more information... She said her name is 'Genellia' and she was in North Syndey, I said "Really, North Sydney, your accent says otherwise" then she went on to pretend she just moved to Australia. I said give me some contact details so I check this is legitimate and I will call you back. I was given a website 'www.helpforwindows.com' (which doesn't exist) and phone number 02 800 54980. I googled the number then found this website! I have never been so proud of myself for being skeptical, I only wish I could talk to her again and tell her how horrible what she is doing is, and whatever God she believes in will surely punish her for this. I doubt she will call again. Thanks for this website!

- Troy HuntThis is an outright scam that is running across the globe and is *usually* sourced from the sub-continent. It's unusual to leave an Aussie number and even more unusual to leave an address.
I've been tracking a number of these and recorded the call I had last night which is now on my blog here: http://www.troyhunt.com/2012/08/cold-call-scammed-again-but-this-time.html
I'll also be sharing the info with local authorities to see if we can get some traction on it.- Caller: Help For Windows
- JohnLady with strong Indian accent called and tried to convince me that we had a computer virus. Came up as overseas phone call and when I questioned her where she was calling from she claimed to be in North Sydney, 106 Albert Street and gave me the 02 8005 4980. She couldnt explain the overseas caller ID and as I had recognised this as a scam I told her that she is the lowest scum on earth tring to scam people. Shame this place "Help for Windows" cant be prosecuted in the courts.

- JohnA guy called Austin was put on after a women with a thick Indian accent called and passed me on to a tech advisor. She had me investigate my computer without being on the internet for internal software problems. Scveptical she put on Austin who proceeded to inform me that I needed a software licence to run my computer after the original runs out after 2 years!! The call started at about 5.30pm on a Friday night and they did not stop until 9.15pm. Stupid me I let them into my computer and then said I needed to pay for a lifetime internal security which they would provide to cover all software problems Price quoted $349. They changed that to $199. I paid $99 through a pay pal. I have contacted my bank after finding out of the scam and they will prosecute an enquiry about the obvious scam. This is posted as a warning to others.Address etc as reported in above post..Nth Sydney.
As above prison time would be too good for these guys.- Caller: help4windows
- KateI just received a call today from a guy with a heavy Indian accent. I am always highly suspicious of anyone who rings my landline because I NEVER give out my landline to anyone (because I'm an EMS) and secondly, everyone who knows me knows I use my mobile due to my roster.
First red flag - they called my landline
Second red flag - they called me Mrs. I'm not married.
Third red flag - they were Indian
I grilled her for information about her company, why she was calling, etc... I refused to give them remote access to my PC - another red flag.
She told me she was legit and gave me 106/283 Alfred Street, Nth Sydney 02 82254980. I will not call them back and I will alert my family of the scam.
Anyone who randomly calls you and asks for remote access to your PC is a scam artist. Do not give them access.- Caller: Help4Windows

- Shaun NI got a call from "Help For Windows" in North Sydney, initially a brief call asking what operating system I run. This was on a phone number I only recently connected, and don't use.
I asked if this was costing me anything - no. I asked where they got my contact details - they rambled on about Genuine Windows user database. They went ON AND ON about how we use internet for many things and computers can be vulnerable to viruses. I asked if they're affiliated with Microsoft - no.
I played dumb a little and went along with their instructions, knowing that I would stop if they either: A) tried to sell me something; or B) told me to do something on my PC i knew was stupid.
Event Viewer is harmless, so i did that. As soon as I said I have yellow triangle warnings in the system log, I got immediately referred to a superior support staff. So the first guy I spoke to was screening for Windows users, the second guy was screening for Warnings in the log, and the third guy was going to tell me how terrible these warnings are.
I told him these warnings are a known issue with a game I play - display driver crashes. I asked if he could guarantee he could fix it. This then lead to him requesting "legal permission" to remotely access my computer. I said "If the ultimate purpose of your call is to remotely access my computer, let me tell you now, that is NEVER going to happen." And he said he could fix the problem that millions of other players of this game have on a regular basis - I asked what tools he was going to use.
At this point he started to suspect I had some technical background and began asking if I have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in IT. I said no - and he said, "I have a Masters. I got it in Victoria" (my state) so I asked, "Which university did you go to?" and He replied: "I forgot."
I laughed and said, "You forgot what university you got a Masters degree at?"
And he IMMEDIATELY hung up.
Advice for anyone who gets a call from these scammers: Immediately demand they never call again and hang up.- Caller: Help For Windows

- LeanneOnce again I have had a call from Help 4 WIndows - from North Sydney, I asked for a number to call back this time he gave me 02 8004 5231.
I asked him how he knew who to call and how did they get my number, which he could not answer. I started to proceed to say I am on the DO NOT CALL register, so he kept saying please ring the number, bye bye, and then he hung up on me.
