Just got a similar call from Frank Cameron.Someone did an audit on my bank account. I am owed $5,248.00 in overcharged fees.  Just need your date of birth. Had him answering lots of curly questions.What address are you calling from, 112 Angel Place, Pittsford Street, Sydney.  I asked for a supervisor, Surprise, busy. He gave me the number 02 800 75535 and the name Catherine Douglas. I could call her and he would ring back in 10mins. He wouldn't give me a reference number without my birth date !! Had a nice chat about Identity theft. Send me the cheque, If I'm not who I say I am, I won't be able to cash it. He laughs. I laugh back.  I rang the Taxation Department in Melbourne to verify their Sydney address!! He didn't ring back. Do I report this to the police or do have call 3AW and have a chat to Neil Mitchell.

Can't believe it Frank called back. Told he what I had found out on the net. He said people make all that stuff up. I said there was no answer on the number he gave  me for Catherine Douglas. He asked me to call it again. I asked if there was a fee involved in getting "my" money back. HE HUNG UP.

I have had the same call today was unclear what the Indian person said as to name of Company etc...  he actually recited my details to me   including address  and he knew I was on a pension. all other details of phone call same .....ref given PK116/13

These people are operating out of South Asia somewhere and the calls are routed through two to four countries before they get to you.  The Police have no chance in Hades of locating this mob, much less chance of actually prosecuting them.  Its just life these days!  Ignore the [***].

Our elderly relative, (89 years) who is hard of hearing, received this type of call today. The man knew his address and asked if he banked with the Commonwealth bank, he said not any more, but told them which bank. They did not ask his banking account details and if he had been asked this he knew he should not give that out. The foreign accented gentleman was difficult to understand and he was given a reference number PK116 and asked to call a Kath Douglas. After much confusion he passed the matter to us and asked if we would call 0280075535 and find out where this $5000 was coming from. We explained to him that it would be a scam but chose to follow through to show him that we would handle the matter.
The number was answered by a foreign accented woman who confirmed she was Kath Douglas once we had given her the reference number. Through questioning we were told it was a refund for being over charged for utilities/ GST etc. and to have this money paid within 24-48 hours we would first have to pay $190 towards the lawyers fees as he has worked on all the cases and has now successfully "got the money back from the bank" (which no longer even matched the original story of where the overcharging was coming from)
After asking what we needed to do to obtain this money, we were told to go to the PO and obtain a "Western Union Money Sending form, which is free" and call her back and she would tell us what to do next. When I stated that this was just a scam and nothing related to refunds from a Government body would be handled this way, I was cut off. We rang the local police about this scam to be told they were aware of it, as was Telstra and Western Union and to inform as many of our in-law's elderly friends as possible to warn them.

Just received a call and I phoned the number  0280075535 and spoke to a woman by the name of Julia Joseph and she asked for my home phone number and when she repeated the phone number back to me I told her no it was incorrect and she hung up on me

My mother (aged 73) received the same call this morning and asked her to call 02 800 75535. Luckily my mother handed me the information because she was confused.
I called back and  had to quote the reference number RF087 and speak to Catherine Douglas to talk about a refund of $5248.00 BUT, they told me it would be HAND DELIVERED tomorrow and I should have ID and present the debit card to prove it was the right account they were talking about.  I butted in and said "so after this phone call I will call the police and give them your name and number and I am assuming this will all check out ok?" they hung up... I have also made a police report and contact scam watch.

Same as all the others above, told to call Catheryn Douglas.  Said someone will call me tomorrow and will hand deliver my cheque for $5248 from the Australian Government due to overcharges from my bank.  Said they had randomly selected 1700 people to receive this refund.

What do these people get out of this?

Same scenario here. However, when I called the police to report the scam I was belligerently informed that there was simply no reason for me to call the police. That they do not manage a register for such scams and feel no duty to inform the appropriate authoritative bodies. When I referred to numerous reports I had heard on/in T.V/newspapers and the encouragement to report such scams to the police, I was met with a very lazy and uncaring attitude. "Oh well I suppose if I have to, I can take your details". These are the people we trust to look to our best interests as a community?

i received a call from an indian guy and he told me that it was from federal government. He promised that i would receive $5278 because of overcharging of transactions. He gave me a reference number AR886 and told me to call 0280075535 for confirmation. Catherine Douglas answered from this number, but told me to pay a lawyer's fee of $199 Western Union money, before i receive the cheque, but i doubted it when she was telling me to pay as soon as possible to the post office.

My mother recvd a call 29/7/13 and was asked to call 02 80075535 and to confirm with a "code number" . Same story as most others. A cheque was to be sent for $5248 within 2 days. I phone them back on behalf of my mother, was give the Reclaim Fed Gov Dept story. To good to be true. will see if the cheque turns up and if can be cashed

I got the same here just a few minutes ago...

Received overseas call. Same as the others, that I would receive a refund of $5248 because of over paid charges and they were from the Government Reclaim Department and did I want the amount  to go in my account or receive a cheque. Had my address, wanted to know DOB, given me a ref no AN422. Told me to ring 0280075535 and speak to Kathleen Douglas or Julia Joseph and to ring them asap.

I too received this type of call, $5000 odd in bank fee overcharge, phone 028 0075535, quote GR501.
Reported to police, told no crime yet committed, can't take any action.
Reported to my bank, can't take any action, but told the bank guarantees against fraud.
Looks like we have to be ripped off before anything can be done.
Can anyone tell me how I can be targeted using - my name, address, phone number, DOB, and bank name?
I am worried and want to take preventative action.

Same scam - "Frank Cooper" called with information about a cheque for $5248 from overcharged fees, gave "Application Code" RF087 and said to call given number after 10:30am the next day, to speak to "Julia" or "Cathryn". Did not ask for any bank details.

Some  telemarketer ([***] or Indian) rang the home phone and asked for my girlfriend, when I said she wasn't home he said that he was from some (fictitious) government department and that I would be getting a refund of about $5K.   I said ME? You rang up asking for my girlfriend and now you want to give "ME" a refund of $5K?  He said yes and proceeded to give me a "reference number," after a few minutes I said to him. "Do you think we are all that gullible?"  Feeling he may not understand I continued, "do you think we are that stupid?"  "Why don't you get a real job?"  HE hung up.  After a few minutes HE RANG BACK and he gave me the 0280075535 number to call and speak to his supervisor.  UNBELIEVABLE....  

The earliest entry of these posts is the 18th March 2013.  No-one in our great and beloved government is doing anything about this scam,  if there is anyone out there who has the ear of someone who can do something about this, please say something to them.  Otherwise you can start an international incident by telling these callers, if they are Pakistani's that Allah must be sucking your *****.
