Received a call from phone number +60321808888. A Malay customer service officer from so called Hong-Leong Bank said that someone had banked in RM 18,000 into my bank accounts. Subsequently, this amount was transferred into three banks. And he suspected some fraud transactions had occurred. Asked about my personal information for verification purposes before he wanted to proceed further.

I was not interested to entertain him. From the start of the conversation, I knew that this was going to be a con phone call. Beware!

Received a phone call from 'Hong Leong Bank KL Headquarters' this morning informing me that today is the final day to make the payment for a personal cash loan that was borrowed under my name & IC (which they mentioned to me). They also told me the date of loan application (early 2017), amount (RMXX,XXX), 5 years installment, the application ID, and then the application bank branch which is in KK, Sabah (um, I'm based in KL and have never gone to Sabah this year?).

I knew something was wrong but I also thought there might be possible case of a misuse of information / data protection by another party here - hence, I explained my stance to the bank and listened on to what they have to say. They said this is an urgent matter and would need to file a police report immediately. I said okay, I'll definitely make a police report later. Then the bank said in order for them to know I was telling the truth about my statement of not having this personal cash loan with them, they said they will redirect the current call to the 'Police Headquarters' in Sabah (since the bank branch reported is in Kota Kinabalu) and record the phone conversation as proof. Hmm, ok fine sure.

*du du du* (phone call redirected - the caller ID is still the bank number FYI)

First 'police officer' picked up and tried to speak in Mandarin. I pretended not to understand Chinese and spoke in English instead. I figured the guy had trouble conversing in English sentences, so he passed the call to another guy who speaks Malay instead. When the second 'police officer' started speaking - in my mind 'eh, how come no Sabahan accent?' Then I pretended my phone reception was bad and they said they'll call me back in a bit.

The moment I hung up, I tried to Google the phone number that the 'bank' used to call (03-2180 0888). Couldn't find any solid results. Then I searched Hong Leong Bank KL HQ phone number, it's 03-2180 8888. One digit difference, hence I was thinking there might be a possibility this was a legit case - or is it?

While I was doing the search, someone with a new number 088-454 222 tried calling me - I didn't pick up. I searched for this new number and found out it is the number of the Police HQ in KK, Sabah. (Hmm, maybe it's legit then..?) The same number called again, I didn't pick up again. Then I called back the same number.

I asked to speak to the officer who was dealing with my case earlier, and the officer who's on the current line was curious as if she didn't know what was happening. I told her what actually happened throughout and she said there wasn't anyone at the station dealing with this kinda bank case today - means it's confirmed a FAKE scam call. The scammers spoofed their caller ID as if it was really the legit bank & police station who called me.

Long story short - BEWARE OF SCAMMERS SPOOFING THEIR CALLER ID. The next time you receive a call from a legit number but that someone sounds suspicious (you may do a search to confirm), just hang up and call them back. They're just masking their phone number as someone else's.

I just got a call from this number!
It sounded like a pre-recorded voice message of a lady's voice speaking Malay. It said that this call is a notice from Hong Leong Bank regarding my outstanding loan payment which I have not paid in 3 months. I hung up after that.
I have no account with Hong Leong Bank, or any outstanding loans.

I got this phone call on 11/06/17 too. but I miss the call & they leave sound message say it call from Hong Leong bank too. Before that on 04/06/17, I also receive call from this phone number, 03-21800088, said calling from Hong Leong bank too & said that I owed loan instalment for 3 months (said the loan total of RM50000) which sign agreement at Hong Leong Bank Kota Kinabalu. So kidding is me even once time also didn't step into Sabah before. So after I close the call & I directly call to Hong Leong bank to check whether really got owed anything loan. Its cleared that I didn't owed any loans because even I have no any bank account related to Hong Leong Bank.

I've just received this call from a HLB CS representative name Mohd Ishak today at 10am which telling me that I have recent incoming fund of RM18,000 which was transferred three times in different amount to a Maybank account this morning and the last one RM3,000 was blocked due to some issue. He asked if I'm aware of this and I denied it of course. He then proceed to made a simple verification with me which he spelled out my name & I/C for me to verify in order to tell me more details about it. However, I didn't verify the NRIC accuracy, he then said that probably he got the wrong person and just hang up before I can question him further. Feel relieve after goolgling the number and found this post, although I was surprised when this number also appeared in bnm database and registered under Hong Leong Islamic Bank Berhad. I've contacted HLB CS and confirmed that this is a scam call.

I just received a call from this number. This is a prank call. The caller will claim that he/she is from XXX bank and tell you that your account has abnormal transaction "trying to scare you". Furthermore, they are able to spell out your basic information. However, please don't fall into the trap. Try to counter back some basic questions to them. In my case, I purposely speak in English with the caller, but the caller refused to answer me in English. Don't tell me a reputable Bank will hire a customer service staff who is unable to speak in English? Secondly, the person is like reading a script, so you can sense that this is "planned" event. Anyway, please be alert on this phone scam.
