Would appear to be genuine HSBC. Called me about their Safeguard programme. I refused to talk on the unsolicited phone call, they understood and then emailed me (looks genuine, including my HSBC ID number) inviting me to call them on their correct number, which I use for Telephone Banking, to arrange a suitable time and date for them to call me again.
I will post again if I find out it is not genuine!

This is a genuine number. The reason people are getting both John Lewis and HSBC is because John Lewis Financial Services Limited is a subsidiary of HSBC Bank plc. I rang HSBC  customer service and they verified that it was a genuine number from one of their departments.

While this maybe a genuine HSBC number ,they do not leave any messages .Thus I always assume that the call cannot be important.

Called to-day both on mobile and landline just 1 min' apart no message left .If this is HSBC then its avery poor way to operate,I suspect its a very well oganised SCAM. Number blocked due to no message then not important and not trusted.

A female caller left a message in poor English and a very strong Asian accent.

While I don't question the lady was genuine and doing her best, it is ridiculous that HSBC don't use staff that can naturally talk in the same language as the majority of customers in the country. Asian English is not the same as British English. No wonder people think it's a spam call. HSBC claim they understand the culture in countries around the World. They either don't have a clue or they are cutting costs at the expense of poor communication.

    Random Bloke
This number rang me this morning.  I picked and waited to hear if there was any click noise to see if it was an automated message, but a bloke with a African sounding voice said hello a couple of times.  At this point I just hung up.  No voicemail left so makes me think this is not genuine as if it was HSBC I would have expected them to leave a voice mail or follow up via email.

Had a voicemail message yesterday from this number. Lady with very heavy south asian accent asked for me by name (I think), said she was from HSBC (I think) and rattled off a call-back number that I could not decipher.  I don't have an HSBC bank account.

This is NOT HSBC calling, its a company that HSBC have passed your details on to, so they can sell you a loan to clear you credit card.
Again, this is NOT HSBC and they did not even do a security check before speaking to me, so that speaks volumes its self

Had 2 calls today but didn't recognise the number. Who should we trust? As many say this is genuine as say it's a scam. Someone should tell HSBC that their number may be compromised.
    • Caller: HSBC or scam?

As I did not remember asking First Direct for anything I was hardly expecting to go through "a security check" to be told something I had not asked for. I am not a suspicious person, but I told him to write to me with the answer he wished to give.
    Very doubtful!

I received a call from this number. The caller claimed to be from HSBC, but I found it almost impossible to understand him, due to a pronounced Asian accent. I asked him to call back on the afternoon of the following day. In the meantime, I checked with HSBC - the number was a genuine HSBC number (but, of course, caller numbers can be faked by scammers). I found it suspicious that there was no call back as arranged - maybe it is inconvenient for overseas call (Asian) centres to operate out of hours (p.m. UK time)?
If this was genuinely HSBC, I do wish they would not make unsolicited calls to customers; especially if they could communicate by their online secure messaging system.
