    Yep, american express fraud department.

I called lost+stolen number on their website 01273 696 933, and after being transferred to the security department, they confirmed that this number was their's.  (though the first guy I spoke to didn't know it!)

Had a message on my phone saying its Amex fraud, giving a number to call back. When I did, Amex said they had not called me. Whoever is using this number is using a genuine Amex number.

this number is bogus, it's from a company posing as american express fraud department, but they themselves are the fraudsters
i got a official looking letter through the post saying to urgently call this number,

but going through the official number (on the back of the card) they confirmed this is a phishing letter...

incidently i also had a call from the same number claiming to be a ppi refund company

always phone the number on the back of the card!!!!

This number is definitely Amex's fraud department.  I confirmed this by ringing the customer services number on my card.  If you get a message to ring Amex on this number (without Amex explaining why) like I did, and are worried, then by all means call the customer service number on your card (ulitmately they will end up transferring you to the fraud department).  In my case I am glad I got the call as a fraudster used my card number to try and charge £230 (first a £1 test charge followed by the £230). Well done Amex fraud for declining both payments, leaving a message for me to call them and telling me I would not be liable for any fraudulent transactions.  They have cancelled my card and are sending a new one with a new number.

I just got a missed call from 01273 343301 and they left me a message to call them back on 08000778057. Is this a scam or shall i phone the number on the back on my card?

They also called my work landline which is why i think this is fake as i didnt give them that number

    any thoughts?

Definitely American Express Fraud Department - why on earth some people have posted that it isn't is beyond me.
Someone tried to use my card details fraudulently about an hour ago.
    Good work AMEX!

I can confirm it's the fraud dept of Amex - I had a voice mail to call them on the 0800 077 8057; I called the normal customer services and they put me through the fraud dept. who confirmed they left a voice mail and that the number was correct.

I am getting a call from this number several times a day even though I do not have or ever want to have an amex card.

    Mr Dave
Same as above - had two calls in my voicemail while away from the office over Christmas. I don't have an AMEX card, plus the number they're calling is my office number. It's pretty unlikely someone would have used this as their contact number to get an AMEX card as it's been owned by this organisation for years.

    I got a call from 0800 077 8057 - fraud caught by amex - seemed genuine
called number on back of card to be 100%
It was amex - they specifically confirmed the number as one of theirs too

the crooks had already tried another fraudulent transaction on the card number I was likely to get as a replacement!!! - I hope they catch them and shoot them twice slowly

Please be assured the number is valid for American Express Fraud Protection services. If you receive a call from this number but do not have an Amex card, it could be that somebody has taken out an account either in your name, or using your telephone number. If you get a call at a business number, it might be that one of our representatives has located the number and tried to call you on a number they believe will lead to the genuine person. I would echo the advice given by many in this thread, if you are ever suspicious you should call the number on the back of a card you hold and never give out sensitive information when you do not feel comfortable doing so.

Yes, this is the genuine Amex fraud department.  Never give sensitive information away over the phone.
In this case Amex were right to call me, as I'd mucked up an online purchase payment. They were just checking it was me and not fraudsters. Thank you American Express.

I got a missed call on my landline from 04480007708057 with no message left. I thought it might be suspicious so I called the number on the back of my card, went through some security checks on the last transaction and spoke to them. It turns out it was actually AMEX who had called and as I cleared the transaction going through security questions they were happy. It is a genuine number even with the bogus looking 044 in front of it!

Received 3 suspicious calls. First 2 I hung up. On third the man said there was something urgent to do with my account. He could tell me what it was until I had gone through a "long security check" I hung up Today got a letter asking me to call 0800 0778057. Thanks for the web site!

I rang the number on the card instead and got straight through to the fraud department as my card had been used fraudulently. This is a genuine Amex fraud number but if in doubt always ring the number on the card.
