Whether genuine or not, it's better not to give any details about yourself other than those they put on any letters they send you.  Even genuine organisations may have rogue employees trying to scrape together information for fraudulent transactions.   Things like d.o.b, middle names, length of time at an address are all used to create credibility about an individual's identity.  

The risk of fraudulent credit and other applications lies nearly 100% with the credit giver (K&Co in this case.)  If they spot suspected fraud they, not you, need to do most to prevent unwanted transactions.

same happened to me, I called the 0800 number above and all they asked was to check my name address and dob no other details, someone opened up account in my name over £500 of stuff all reported now

I have had the same happen to me i.e that someone using part of my contact details to try and open a catalogue credit account but there were slight inconsistencies.  Luckily ISME.COM rejected the account and sent out a letter asking to call 0844 822 4650 who then transferred me through to the fraud team on 0800 0151290.  Also sanity checked this by calling ISME customer service and all checked out.  All details logged with CIFAS with a flag if anyone else tries to use your details.

It's a number for there Investigations/Security Department, it's likely that they need to confirm some of your personal information in regards a new account or application but could be anything in relation to security.
