After two calls from this number I rang the Co-op bank (on a number from their web site) took five minutes of typing in numbers and then ten minutes listening to music before getting to speak to a very pleasant human who tought it was probably a genuine call. Apparently I'd inadvertently paid less than the minimum on my credit card. So the human kindly transferred some money from a Co-op current account to more than cover the shortfall.

The following day I got 5 calls from the same number...

This one came through to my mobile and left a blank message as well. I rang back and found it a bit suspicious so went thorugh my normal bank number. apparently it should have left a message. Apparently it only rings when they suspect fraud on your account or you haven't paid a credit card bill.

They didn't seem to think it a daft system given all the scams out there. Bring back people or a letter. Mobiles can change hands pretty easily and dates of birth aren't that hard to find out/guess!

The number IS genuine, but the method closely resembles a scam and so I called the Co-op and they confirmed this to be their method of reminding customers that a payment had been missed. In my case they were right as my latest statement had gone awol in the post. I suggested that an e-mail would be enough to alert me to check my account history and that it would cause less worry about being called by some dodgy geezer from Belize!

Automated voice asks for name in this household to "press any key to continue".
How do I know I'm not going to be connected to a line which is going to cost me £15 a minute?

So I called the number given above (0161 838 8769) and got though VERY quickly to a very helpful member of their "FEEDBACK STAFF" who has promised to remove my number from their database so that I don;t get any  more calls like this.  Also referred him to this website so that he could see for himself about the "feedback" these calls are getting.

PLEASE CALL THE 0161 838 8769 - The WANT your feedback!  LEt's give it to them.........

Just dumped my thoughts on co-op customer services too. It's ridiculous they're using a system that so closely resembles a social engineering scam.

At least they're calling my mobile this time, and not my home phone and bothering my wife ALL F***ING DAY, EVERY DAY FOR A MONTH.

    Why don't they listen
Can get numerous calls from Co-operative. Have contacted them to respond in writing but this is ignored. Their automated call system amounts to a form of harrassment that is in breach of the consumer credit act.

Keep getting calls claiming to be from the Co-op.... I bank with Smile.

It's very irritating and means that I'm just not answering the phone.  I'm just glad I never give out my mobile no. to businesses.

Turns out it is the Co-op, but how are you supposed to know? I bet they wouldn't refund you if you fell for exactly the same scam sent in email form rather than as an automated phone call, so what's the difference? How do you know you can trust the caller? They should have a system where they tell you a pre arranged password at least, before I'd be willing to hand over any details to someone who CALLED ME.

This number calls me constantly about 8 times a day.  I have listened to the autominated voice which says to press numbers if you are wrong person/do not want to be called anymore and it still keeps ringing me.  What can I do to stop it!!

This is genuinely from the Co-operative Bank Visa department.

This number called my mobile several times a day whilst I was at work. As I didn't recognise the number, I didn't answer. Once it called 4 time within one hour!

When I did eventually answer I was asked to give part of my pass code and confirm some other personal details. My payment was late and I was unable to make it for another few days (until I was paid).

The continuous calls from this number were annoying, but to their credit, they were only ever between 9am and 5pm, and one I spoke to them the calls stopped (even though I didn't make the payment and was still late).

I expressed my displeasure with customer services on the normal number (once I had brought the payment up to date of course!).

Had one of these at home at the weekend, immediately followed by one on the mobile. It is (or in this case was) genuine - but I agree with 2Jokers: DON'T key in any numbers or answer automated questions, but get the Coop's number from your statement and phone them. I did, and it was a genuine query.

my partner missed last months payment, £50 i think, she has informed the co op it wil be sorted by month end.  so far today i have received 7 calls from the 0845 number. 0161 has yet to call.  our average day is 12 calls.  if there is anyone out there who can get the ceos  mobile number i think we should jointly launch a calling campaign to him.
