We keep getting calls on our bill to 0871 2005 089 every month around 30 calls at 10p a call and every call is around 2.40am? We have asked our service provider, Sky, and they can't tell us what its for, we've asked BT and they can't tell us either, we dial it and it sounds like a fax machine. Has anyone else got this problem?

Yes, we have the same problem - 89 calls on our bill each at 5:07am (when we are asleep!) and BT say they don't know who it is, yet they can't block the number.

After a lot of work I have got ADT to admit that it is their alarm system which make a call each day to have the system checked out, at 10p per call. They now admit that if you ask, THERE IS A FREE PHONE OPTION!

It is your ADT alarm and if you ask ADT there is a freephone number they can use at a cost of £1 per month. Complain to you local trading standards office!

I've just looked through my bill and have apparently called this number over 30 times at around midday back in November. Each time I'm charged 13p! I'm now on hold to talk to BT about this

    Its your ADT alarm system.
The alarm uses remote signalling - as well as the bell / siren inside the home, it will send a signal to the ADT control centre to alert them that your alarm has gone off.

The daily call appearing on your bill is the alarm system doing a routine dial into the control centre to check for software updates, system status etc.

Just got an ADT system installed about a month ago, and noticed the daily call on my first bill since.
Thanks for the tips above - I intend to phone ADT and ask them to change the number so I'm not getting charged 22p a day for the calls.

Thanks for the tip - I was getting charged 22p a day for this phonecall too. Rang ADT and they said they are happy to give me a freephone number instead (for an extra charge of £1 a month to my ADT payment). Cannot believe they don't offer this on installation and I had to find this site to even hear about it. Ah well

I only just noticed these numbers on my bill.  ADT changed it to another premium rate number at some point.  Telephoned them and complained bitterly that they did not tell me it was a premium rate number that would be doing the dial out.  They changed it to a freefone number without charging me £1.00 per month as I told them I would be taking it further.  I think it is illegal to do this without telling you.  We should all complain to Watchdog and Trading Standards, I know I will be doing so.

Good on you! I complained yesterday too. The response I got was that only some companies are charging for the calls out (which to me is ridicuous - surely for each phonecall that isn't a freephone number there will be a connection charge at least) and I am "unfortunate" to be with a company who has taken advantage of me by charging me 21p for a 5 second phone call. I told ADT that of course I'd be getting charged it's an 0781 number- a premium rate number. That said though these calls never appeared on my bills when I was with Tiscali and my call costs on my land line with them was often £nil (I rarely use my landline). I only noticed the calls when I moved to Virgin Media. Then again when I moved to Virgin Media, ADT had to come out to connect my alarm to the different phoneline - maybe they reprogrammed my alarm system at the same time.

To add insult to injury though I had to stay in all day yesterday to get my alarm reprogrammed to dial out the freephone number. At half 4 I rang them to find out what was going on - they'd forgotten about me. I finally got it sorted at half 6.

I'm in the middle of a complaint procedure too.

Apparently any new customers are told about this and given the opportunity to use the freephone number.... but older, existing, loyal customers like me (13 years with ADT) have been paying about £5 per month for the last 2 years in premium phone calls, unknowingly. It was only by chance that I asked for an itemised phone bill and spotted this.

Unless I get a satisfactory resolution from ADT, Watchdog, the Trading Standards office and other like minded bodies will be informed, and I suggest everyone else in this forum does the same....

I have just noticed that I am  being bill by BT between £5 and £10 per month for the number 0844 8480809 which is being dialed from my landline every day at 4.30 pm.  Upon investigation I found out that it is ADT charging on an 0844 number.    I have my ADT box replaced in July 2011 as the old one had broken (the box was only 2 years old at the time!), since then the phone charges have started sometimes several times a day. There were no extra charges with the old box.  I am very angry about this as I was not informed that in addition to the monthly fee and steep installation charge that there would be additonal fees.  I need to read the contract later but I remember something about paying an extra £1 to avoid phone bill fees?  If this is the case then I shall be asking for a refund.  Luckily I have spotted this now as my BT bill is online and I do not usually check it.  I shall be complaining to ADT and attempting to get a refund and the free phone number as mentioned on a previous message.   I too will be taking this further and complaining officially to Trading Standards.  Thank you to others on this site for the information.

I too am absolutely outraged by this and have only just found out today via my telephone provider.  I'd really like to take my business away from ADT.  I have just had to authorise them to change the number used to a freephone number - why were we not informed of the premium rate number being used and asked to authorise them to do this?  It beggers belief!!!!!!  Have been a customer since 1992, first with Telecom Security and then ADT took over - how long has this been going on?  Steam coming out of my ears!!!!!

I moved from Tiscali to Virgin in 2009 and that's when I noticed the premium rate number on my bills. I'm certain it was free before but because Virgin use a different phoneline and engineer had to come out and swap the wires round, I think he set up the new number then. So if that helps I think at least 3 years :-( I also got charged for the engineer coming out to switch the line my alarm connects to :-(

It certainly is ADT.  I have just logged onto Sky to change my package and saw all of those calls going back at least a year.  Spoke to ADT, they do provide a 'free' phone service at £12 per year and they are going to refund the charges they have made to my phone bill !!   Shocking behaviour !!
