I too answered an ad on Craig's list Tulsa. It was for a clerical position for a electrical company. Today I received a check for $2500.00 for art supplies ordered that was to be shipped to my house after I paid some guy in California and the remainder was pay for the week. I was told to deposit the check into my account but I held on to the check. I'm concerned because all my info was on my résumé.

THIS IS A BIG SCAM!  This guy is running adds for positions on Craigslist and telling people they have secured the position and then sending them a fradulent check on my business.  I have people calling me every day to verify checks.  They are generally for $2,000--$2,500. He then tells them to cash the check and send him cash back for various things.  He is also collecting their personal information to perpetrate fraud on them next.   Don't be foolish - THIS GUY IS FRAUD. He uses dozens of different names - including James McLarry, Jean McLarry, Travis Cucoo and Martin Green.   He is posting all over the United States & asking money be sent to UK & Phillipines & heaven knows where else.  Be safe!

I received the same email after applying to two different positions.  However, I did not completely agree and within a few days I received a check for a little under three grand.  I emailed and asked what I was to do and he gave instructions.  I was confused as the company it came from is a Fortune 500 company.  The name of the guy is Dustin Eugine.

The name & number he sent me is Noah Theobald.
    Tel:(+613)3403-77545
    Cell:(209)233-8103.
He sent a check and the postage was from a different country, but I am not sure which one. What is the scam? If I were to cash the check he sent, at the bank it is drawn on, would I be breaking the law??? The account number on the check is a real account....

Can the check clear the bank it was drawn on? If so, and I haven't given him my personal information other than phone & address, would I be responsible for the fraudulent check???

(209)233-8103 is the number he is currently using called him, so far I have not received a check of any sort, but when I do I will update this posting. He is still going by Noah Theobald. I would suggest to all who have checks to call the bank the routing number belongs to and speak with the bank. If he is using multiple banks to write the checks and u call those banks and report to them you recieved the check you should be off the hook for any type of fraud investigation. And I would highly suggest not depositing them at all for any reason whatsoever no matter how tempted you may be in these circumstances better to be safe than sorry.

    Duhhh...
I replied to an ad for a private duty nurse in my area.  The email said that the position had already been filled but that he needed a personal assistant.  I actually got two different emails.  One from a David Walker in the UK and one from a Noah Theobald in Australia.  Too bad he got my contact information from my resume.  But really, I wouldn't be too worried about that.  That isn't the point of the scam. I would assume that the checks are either fake, or drawn of a stolen account number.  Either way, you cash the check, the bank realizes the mistake and takes the full amount back out of your account AND charges you an overage fee.  I doubt you will get into any trouble if you cash just one check, but who has an extra 2000 to gamble on?

I got an email from him too after I sent him my resume for an Office Asst. I live in AZ. He offered me $300 per week. He's using the name Noah Theobald. Now I know not to reply to him. I applied for another Office position & the guy offered me $400 per week also saying he was in  Australia. He is going by the name as David Williams but the picture that was posted with his email profile showed a name of Allen Dave; which I looked up on Facebook.

distant person offers a genuine-looking (but fake) cashier's check

you receive an email offering to buy your item, or rent your apartment, sight unseen.
cashier's check is offered for your sale item, as a deposit for an apartment, or for your services.
value of cashier's check often far exceeds your item - scammer offers to "trust" you, and asks you to wire the balance via money transfer service
banks will often cash these fake checks AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE CHECK FAILS TO CLEAR, including criminal prosecution in some cases!
scam often involves a 3rd party (shipping agent, business associate owing buyer money, etc)

    Craigslist advise
    Examples of Scams

    1. Someone claims that craigslist will guarantee a transaction, certify a buyer/seller, OR claims that craigslist will handle or provide protection for a payment.

These claims are fraudulent, as craigslist does not have any role in any transaction.
Scammer will often send an official looking email that appears to come from craigslist, offering a guarantee, certifying a seller, providing payment services -- all such emails are fakes!
    2. distant person offers a genuine-looking (but fake) cashier's check

you receive an email (examples below) offering to buy your item, or rent your apartment, sight unseen.
cashier's check is offered for your sale item, as a deposit for an apartment, or for your services.
value of cashier's check often far exceeds your item - scammer offers to "trust" you, and asks you to wire the balance via money transfer service
banks will often cash these fake checks AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE CHECK FAILS TO CLEAR, including criminal prosecution in some cases!
scam often involves a 3rd party (shipping agent, business associate owing buyer money, etc)
    3. Someone requests wire service payment via Western Union or MoneyGram:

Scam "bait" items include apartments, laptops, TVs, cell phones, tickets, and other high value items
Often claim that an MTCN or confirmation code is needed before he can withdraw your money - this is FALSE, once you've wired money, it is GONE.
Common countries currently include: Nigeria, Romania, United Kingdom, Ukraine, Spain, Italy, Netherlands - but could be anywhere
Apartment listing may be local, but landlord/owner is "travelling" or "relocating" and needs you to wire money to them abroad
Deal often seems too good to be true, price is too low, rent is below market, etc
    4. distant person offers to send you a money order and then have you wire money:

this is ALWAYS a scam, in our experience - the cashier's check is FAKE
sometimes accompanies an offer of merchandise, sometimes not
scammer often asks for your name, address, etc for printing on the fake check
deal often seems too good to be true
    5. distant seller suggests use of an online escrow service.

most online escrow sites are FRAUDULENT, operated by scammers
for more info, do a google search on "fake escrow" or "escrow fraud"
    6. distant seller asks for a partial payment upfront, after which he will ship goods

he says he trusts you with the partial payment
he may say he has already shipped the goods
deal often sounds too good to be true
    7. foreign company offers you a job receiving payments from customers, then wiring funds

foreign company may claim it is unable to receive payments from its customers directly
you are typically offered a percentage of payments received
this kind of "position" may be posted as a job, or offered to you via email

Guys craigslist is full of scammers, I recently got out of the banking business and I have seen at least 1000 fake checks from here varying from personal assistant jobs to people have sold items in return for an outrageous check, please turn the checks over to your local bank included the envelope and make sure you get a copy of it them go file a police report with the fraud dept with everything you have emails phone numbers and never never respond to them, in my experience they are not looking to harm anyone physically but still be Cautious of strangers stopping by and never ever cash a check that comes in the mail and you don't know why!! Good luck everyone I hate to see victims of this crime
