- KristaThis number called me today at 10 am (sask time ) I didn't answer. A mid 20's gentlemen left me a msg to call him back and left me with a 800 number and an ext. He said he was in the office till 6 today.
- Lees| 1 replythey've called me twice! the first time, i said i had school and i had to leave, and the second time they called, i wasn't home. i'm definitely not interested in taking a businees degree.. i don't think i even signed up for this! :|
- Caller: Meritus University.
- MArkJust called me just now, I knew it was a scam but wanted to see , and it was Meritus U !!!! I kindly said no thank you and to take me off their list, I know I'm wasting my breath by saying that but I tired anyway
- jennSomeone just called me 3:35 pm Ontario time I don't even know anyone in New Brunswick....and I'm not looking for university...I got a call from a number that I didn't know. I finally answered and I asked the guy how he has my number. He said I applied online for Everest College in Mississauga.....but the joke is I did not even give them my number..I spoke to an online rep and asked her to email me info...the guy called and said he got my info from my email address...My mother said they are hackers....they can get ur info from ur email...I hope this helps someone.
- Allison| 1 replyI used to get this phone number calling my cell phone constantly. After I got rid of my cell, it has just recently started calling my HOUSE phone!!
GRRRR!!! How do we make this STOP!!- Caller: Meritus University
- AmyYou guys, it is a legit. university. You can earn an degree by studying online (Bachelors or Masters degree). 'meritusu.ca'
If you don't want calls to your residence or cell phone stop filling out ridiculous surveys on the net to win stuff (leaving your contact info.). Whoever is doing the marketing for this institution obviously has access to this info. somehow.- Caller: Meritus University
- Chantel| 1 replyAs a student at Meritus University, I think you are all overreacting. THe only reason they are calling you is because each and every one of you have filled out your personal information on the internet. Name, phone number, email address and mailing address. So, this comes through to their system in the form of a request. You are not registered for school at all, it is simply a request for information so a representative would ask you a couple of questions for admissibility and then send you an infomrational package.
Perhaps attending a provincially recognized online university would not be a bad thing for some of you.. ignorance is bliss? and education is the key to a brighter future.
When I am an executive for IBM, I will be calling my enrollment advisor and thanking her. - Liz| 1 replyThese people call me once a day and have since about March. I just ignore the call, but I wish they'd stop calling incessantly - after the first few times I didn't pick up, stop trying!
- Caller: Meritus University
- Sarah| 4 repliesI have been getting these calls twice a day and am beginning to consider it harassment.
I have searched into this further and according to the federal accreditation website, it is not listed as an accredited school.
http://tools.canlearn.ca/cslgs-scpse/cln-cln/ ... art=0&finish=19
Another place I looked is at a Canada wide scholarship that I won last year, and see if Meritus is listed as an accredited school there: http://www.excellenceaward.ca/incourse/_e/index.php?page=institutions
Again, not listed.
However, there is a link on the Meritus site linking to a government of New Brunswick site which claims it IS accredited. My suspicions is it is only recognized within the province, and is worth nothing on a federal scale. This means if you ever plan on working or taking further studies outside of NB, chances are your degree will not be recognized. So Chantel, good luck working for IBM with an unrecognized degree, or getting into a decent school for an MBA (a minimum qualification for ANY executive position).
I have actually worked for a Canadian college's recruitment department and from experience I can tell you that the less a college or university has to advertise the better the program is received by students and employers. The fact that this school has to resort to harassment and privacy invasion to get students to apply, speaks no good to their program quality or reputation.
Personally, I wouldnt bother even looking at this school, but if you get the call and are seriously considering this as further education, take my tips:
1) Find out if you can contact current and previous students and find out what the courses are like, and what jobs they are currently holding. Do these jobs interest you?
2)Take a close look at the entry requirements, chances are if they seem too good to be true they are. There are a lot of places online where anybody can pay for a degree in whatever they want. Remember the school of thought that anything worth having is going to be a challenge.
3)Talk to registrars at accredited schools in your area that you are familiar with and have a good reputation with students and employers. Find out if a bachelors degree from this university would qualify for further advancement (whether you plan to do a masters or not, it will help you to get an idea as to how well the industry will accept your credentials once you graduate)
4)Find out about financing. The Meritus site lists that you may be eligible for "cash plan, third party billing, corporate tuition reimbursement plan, private student loans or bursaries" but does not list a provincially funded loan plan. I am not sure what is available from NB, being from Ontario I am familiar with OSAP. If the province isnt willing to loan money to the students of this program, is this somewhere you want to invest your money? I HAVE been to a privately run college in the past, and even it was eligible for provincial loans. ALso, check with your bank about student loans. These people make big bucks to make good investment and loan decisions and if the school isnt eligible for loans through your bank, that should be a big red flag for you.
5) Talk to your employer or contact companies that you may one day like to work for. Ask them what job qualifications you would need to work your dream job and work backwards from there (again, maybe talk to universities around you if MBA or higher is needed) Also, ask if the company would even CONSIDER hiring someone with an online degree. Ask these potential employers what their top 3 school picks are when hiring recent grads.
6) Go to an employment centre and do the same as above.
Hopefully this will help anyone who is considering online education, and good luck! - former employeeHi guys,
I used to work at Meritus University. They are a real online University, but if you did not request information I would recommend that you answer the phone and firmly tell them that you do not want them to contact you. It was our Job to call and call and call. They are relentless and will not give up until they get an answer. - TomasPhone number called me at 16:45 GMT. I did not recognize the number so I did not answer.
- Rick| 1 replyI am currently enroled with Meritus for my Bachelor of information Technology Management. I have funding through OSAP even though they are a university from NB I still qualified for Government Student Loans to cover my tuition. When I was filling out my student loan forms Meritus was on the list like UoT so their accreditation is recognized in Ontario.

- yoyowow and i thought i was the only one
- RikinHey Rick:
I am also planning to enrol in their BITm program and was wondering if OSAP will approve that. Thanks for your feedback. - Mercedes101I know there is no federal accreditation and that they are accredited. However, I do not like the fact of them calling me morning until 5pm every night and on the weekend. It is harassment, I even get emails not one but like 10 or so. It is a real turn off for me to go to school. I would love to go to school but just let it be-- with the phone calls.
If they are that desperate for business, I wonder if they will be around in a year or two. - kitaWow - there are some ignorant people on here! I was contacted because I REQUESTED information - but I had forgotten about it - now I know who is contacting me and I am glad because I WANT to attend university!
As for this discussion- Who fills in their REAL phone number on an online form and DOES NOT expect to be contacted???
Second - There is NO FEDERAL accreditation in Canada. Every accredited school is given degree granting status from the PROVINCE that they are based in.
I agree with the poster who said that some of you people on here could definitely use an education. It might make your critical thinking skills improve, as well as your ability to gather the CORRECT information before making assumptions.
Quit filling out online forms and giving your real information, people!!!! It's your own fault your being contacted!!- Caller: unknown
- matcalled me.
i live in the uk!! - JenniferI live in NB, just a 10 minute drive from the university. When looking at our provincial government website - http://www.gnb.ca/0105/ps/univ_ccnb-e.asp you will see Meritus University listed as a degree granting institution. I applied and have been busy completing my business degree that I started at the University of New Brunswick(UNB)back in 2003. It's a great program and allows me to work full-time while gaining my education...and my company helps me pay for my tuition! I've already spoken to UNB and if I want to go back, they will accept the credits taken at Meritus...so it's all pretty legit to me! As far as getting calls without asking for information, it's hard to say...the internet is a bizare place! It definitely isn't a scam! I'm enjoying my program far more than I ever did at a traditional university and the student services are great!
- GordWow there are some paranoid people out there!! Meritus is a actual university and all of their credits ARE recognized at any university. In fact the Canadian military is paying for my degree from there right now. Some so called university graduate was claiming that it is some sort of fake university. I wonder what kind of degree they got probably had nothing to do with actual research, because if you spend 30 seconds on google you will see that it is legit.
- Mark| 6 repliesI really wonder why someone would enroll in Meritus? Don't be so convinced that other univerities will recognize courses/credits or even undergrade degrees if you want to move on! There are many less concerning institutions which offer quality degrees - so why enroll here? Meritus is an actual university - BUT lets be clear it is a private company which has authority from the government of New Brunswick to grant degrees. I have no idea why they would do so but this gives Meritus a foothold in Canada hence they are spreading but your degree is granted under the authority of the government of New Brunswick. Meritus is a subsidiary of the Apollo Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: APOL). Yes, it's very different and, at the end of the day, they are responsive to shareholders. It's all about profit - hence the phone calls. Some of Apollo's other higher-learning institutions (i.e., University of Phoenix) have been in frequent legal and regulatory controversies and they have a pathetic graduation success rate!
