This snotty woman called my cell 5 months ago, sayin I owed for 5 different NFS checks, some as old as 2005! I stupidly set up for monthly payments. As this witch told me I could loose my in home daycare business if I was not compliant. Made one payment, she was to call the next month, never did. Called me the 3rd month and told me since I didn't pay last month, I had to pay 2 checks!! Very rude, and unprofessional for a law firm. I refused to pay 2, but did pay for 1 more. I repeatedly asked for a statement, and have NEVER received one, not once! So when the shark called me this month, I refused until I receive something in writing and hung up on her. It will be interesting if I ever see some kind of proof that I already paid off half of my debt or what I still owe. But I think they are a scam, but if you wrote bad checks, no matter how long ago, it is yours to repay. With statements of course! :)

I called to rectify a matter that I have the cancelled CLEARED check from my bank pulled online while I called to request an email address to send the copy to, the woman on the other end wouldn't even let me ask where to send the copy. She just started yelling at me about taking care of my bad check. She hung up on me. I called back got another gentleman on the phone who wasn't quite as rude but informed they wouldn't accept an email I had to fax or mail. Now I am kind of nervous about sending a copy of the cancelled check because my information is on the check, what's to stop them from using that information to make withdrawls from my account. Also, on the letter they had no check number ( I know the only check I wrote to this business so it wasn't hard for me to figure out) or any other information identifying my check. For all I know, they got my information from the business somehow and are hustling to get some money...$100 for a $25 check...seriously? I asked for their Dept of Insurance number that they should have registered in my state to file a complaint with how the first representative treated me, the man said it was irrelevant and that they were not a collection agency. I am distrusting, still going to file a complaint with the Dept of Insurance and check my credit report to be sure they aren't blackmailing me to give them money for a bad check that does not exist. I have never experienced such a lack of professionalism or rudeness when I've called someone to try to fix a problem. I made an attempt but ...WOW... I was laughing at the woman yelling at me, seriously, do they hire people with anger issues to harass, insult, and mistreat people who are trying to do the right thing and take care of a debt, whether it's legit or not? This agency (yes, collection agency, attorneys or not) are the low life of debt collectors.

Plain and simple - if you owe a debt - pay it! Then collectors would have nothing to call you about.

Remember that Collectors are people too - its not like they take the job because as children they aim to be one some angry debt collector. Also keep in mind that the job is hard, they spend the majority of their day speaking to people who are mean/rude/vulgar from the minute they pick up the phone. People who are upset at their situation - no money, not able to afford to get by - tend to take it out, even on the nicest of collectors - only because they do not wish to be reminded of present circumstances.

Collectors are just doing their job - albiet some do it unproffesionally, but the point remains the same - if you paid the debt to begin with, it wouldnt make it to a collection agency/attorneys office.

In terms of fake agencies - Google the company name, check out their website, call the BBB (Better Business Bureau) in their state - If they were fake - why would someone waste their time working for them?? I know I wouldn't go to work if I knew the company I worked for was just out to scam someone!

In terms of letters - an agency only needs to notify of the debt being placed with them. When you recieve that letter you have 30 days to dispute the validity of the debt. The letter will tell you the steps you need to take to do so. It will also advise you that if you do not dispute it in that 30 days, than the balance is owed.

Payments over the phone - are you all aware that if you give a company permission to take money from your account on a certain day - and they remove it on a different date - you can sue the agency! Most agencies will tell you they only accept payment over the phone as a means to help you - with that payment set on the account, the client; i.e. The store, the bank, the company you owe, can see that you have intention to take care of it before they move the account further. (Another agency or an Attorneys office) If you do not have an active account or are still not comfortable with it - MoneyGram or Western Union is usually an option - and you can call the collector back with the tracking number as proof you sent it.

Also keep in mind that agencies/offices do keep very good notes. What you say is documented on your account, so if you have been repeatedly rude to collectors at the same company - of course they will have the "harshest" collector there call you next. That is their job - to assist you in finding a way to pay the debt that you owe. It is NOT their fault that you bounced the check, ran up a credit card bill so high that you cant afford to pay it, or terminated phone service and owe an early termination fee. It IS their JOB to collect the money.

Their notes also document things like payments - when to run it & for how much. If there are multiple payments, all are documented in the notes from that conversation. If you set a payment plan with many payments, you will generally recieve a notice in the mail 7-10 days before the payments process's to remind you.

Also keep in mind that just because you havent heard from anyone about a debt in a significant amount of time, does NOT mean it went away. It generally means that the account was moved to another agency/office. Eventually, they WILL find you again. Collectors will utilize what services they need to, to locate a debtor.

All and all - if you dont want to deal with collectors - than pay your bills/fees/accounts/overdrafts and so on - then we would all put collectors out of work! :)

I did in fact have a bill but these lawyers tried to get an additional $200.00. I paid the bill, the money was excepted and these lawyers kept calling, until I sent an e-mail stating the bill was paid and I have heard nothing more from the company I owed so if they continued to bother me I would in fact sue them for harassment. I am just so shocked at all I am seeing on here about this particular law office and yes the one time I did speak with a woman she was very rude and wouldn't even let me finish a sentence. I so agree that people should know bout this and what you had to say, I am going to tell my mother for sure about what you had to say, Thank you.

    BEWARE.... replies to GUEST
There is always a statute of limitations on debt.  Whether it is credit card, nsf checks, medical bills or other.  In Minnesota, the statute of limitations for old debt is 6 years.  Many debt collection companies and firms buy this "old debt" for pennies on the dollar.  Quite often, this is debt that has far surpassed its statute of limitations for collection.  Most individuals may receive calls from these "collection" agencies or lawfirms based on their ability to pay off the debt.  All debt collections agencies and lawfirms have software that research a persons ability to pay off a debt even if it is past it statute of limitations for collection.  Collectors will not bother or make the effort to contact people who cannot pay or extend the debtor (even if it is not your debt) the kindness of informing them that this is a debt that may not be theirs or that it has indeed surpassed the statute of limitations time limit for collection of that particular debt in the state it was incurred.  Should you pay your debts?...absolutely!!  But, beware of companies like this one.  You can check what the statute of limitations is on debt by state at the following web site:  www.creditinfocenter.com.  You can also check for information on Fair Debt Collection by going to your states attorney generals office website or google the Fair Debt Collection Act.  It has tons of information on consumers rights in regards to debt and appropriate debt collection practices.  It is also advisable for persons that do have a ligitimate debt- to have the collection agency or firm mail confirmation of the alleged debt in writing...that is the law and that way consumer can verify whether or not to comply or report abuse to the states attorney general.  So... to the person who wrote that is not a scam...beware...make sure you check the above websites and protect yourself and your family from from debt collection scam and abuse.

Debt collection is a billion $ business replies to ANN
Most debt is incurred by people who have had misfortune in their lives.  Debt collectors are people who make money of the misfortune of others.  An industry that is currently thriving in this horrible ecomony.  Debt can be many things.  90% of US consumers debt is medical bills.  People who are terminally ill, have parents or children who are ill, have been in an accident or have an incurable disease.  Most debt collectors make a six figure income...how can you sleep at night?

Are you serious, "Remember that Collectors are people too". This firm practices rude and abusive tactics to collect their "alleged" debts. Pull your head out and join the real world. If collectors want to have any success, the way to approach a client is with kindness. This is a debt "mill" that works on the "scare tactic" method of collections. If they yell at you and threaten you and scare you, you will pay. But a little surprise awaits this firm in the form a massive class action lawsuit which will follow investigations by the Attorney's Generals of all states. Let see how they enjoy being on the other side of the coin. Remember, this always a two way door and right now they are going to be on the other side of it.

Rudest people ever.  Called me claiming I owed money to Ebay.  I've never used Ebay, and when I told him that, he replied to me in an extremely snotty and sarcastic tone, "Oh, like you've NEVER used Ebay, come on.."
When I started to argue with him, he hung up on me.
I called them back and got someone else who was actually helpful.   What they do is investigate debts like this, they don't actually have your social security number or your credit report.  Remember that.

Supposedly my case has been cleared up, and they removed my number.  We shall see...

Don't go to work for this company!!! A lot of the legal assistants are very rude and very unprofessional. If you don't live in the state of Minnesota, do not pay them as they cannot proceed any further. Anytime a legal assistant or manager says they are going to personally take your literal paper file to Joel W. Lavintman's office because he has requested that all refusals to pay be sent to him is merely a scar tactic used to get you to pay your bill. Send your cease-and-desist letters immediately to the address found on gogginslegal.com. You will also notice that the website looks terribly cheap. Do not use it to have your payments processed. Another side note, a lot of the legal assistants are very, very slow and most of them have had their only collections experience at G&L.
