Well what can I tell you. These guys are genuine bottom feeders of debt collection industry. They buy old statute expired debt and through harassment tactics try to collect 10 to 30 cents on the dollar. Of course the minute anything is collected, the statute date resets to day 1 and their other outfits and ambulance chasers come after you. If you have noticed their letter of settlement is only for the debt with them, not original debtor or the next place they sell it to. The only way to fight these guys is to get with your state authorities. These guys know all the Federal loopholes.

37 th call from these people.Over last 10 months.I use that term generously..This time , Calling about an active debt, supposedly of my x- husband ( divorced over 28 years.).Claiming it was a community property state , Cali.(debt  was in 2005) following this. An d I am responsible for it also. They spoke to him in June and that's how they got my number. !. We haven't spoken in over 5 years. 2, Divorced in 1984. 3. He passed in January of this year..If this is not abusive harrasment. I don't know what else is. FYI . Nearly all calls are from a different number.Threats are from ruining my credit to they will take care of me through other ways..Breaking my kneecaps ? Harm to my grandchildren ?Also my name is not Low Life [***]. I have now decided the best action is if I see an alien area code..It is ignored and am in process of gathering what I have and taking legal action..Thanks for the VENT time..Erin

Well for those who are not familiar with portfolio Recovery debt collection, let me lay out what they do. These guys buy leads wholesale and don't care much whether the debt is current, statute barred or even paid off. Their tactics are shall we say in the grey area of the law. So as you might have figured out by now, they know all the Federal loopholes. So if you don't want to hide from them and give them as good as they give, your best bet is your state attorney's office. By the way, settling with these guys for a discounted payment is not going to help you any, their letter of settlement is for their debt only. That will not affect the original debt holder, nor the one that they will sell your information to – yup, they'll sell it as soon as they finish getting paid.

If this is Portfoolio, this is the first time they've called my cell.  They had called the house phone for years and I blocked as many as I could, reported to the FCC, and filed a PUC complaint.  That stopped them for a while, but that one call on the cell better darn well be random!

This number called me about a debt of my ex-husbands from 20 years ago. He died in 2001.  I don't care!  I just don't answer anymore, but thank you for all the numbers I can add to my phone to block them.  I've heard from them 8 or 10 times in the last couple of years.

Someone here said they were threatened with harm by this collection agency. That is illegal, I know that because I used to work for one. Assault is never legal.
If they threaten you again, record if you're able, take the recording to the police and file a report against them.
And it is true that these companies don't care if the debts their trying to collect on are legitimate. They'll even go after people in hospices.
At&t is real big on selling PAID debts to bottom feeder collection companies. Just FYI

They have a lot of numbers that they use and will never leave you a message.

Thank you very much.  This list is helpful.  At least 8 of those numbers are ones I've received too.  We have no debts, nor do we owe anyone money.  These callers do not leave messages, but we will not answer an unknown number.   They are calling a couple of times a week for months now.  They obviously have the wrong number.  If a legitimate person would call and leave a name/number callback, I would let them know that they're chasing the wrong people.  Otherwise, I'm assuming they're scammers.
