This number calls about a couple of times each week with a recorded message.  They claim to be a collection agency. I believe they have a wrong number because 1. This is not a new number, 2. I don't have anything a collection company might be calling for.  I wish I could make them stop calling.

Yet another scam.  one of half a dozen such calls I get at work or home.  an oregon number has been more persistent but this one recently is calling to say something went wrong w my last payment to ATT.  well, that is not an ATT number.  and the phone calls themselves originate in Detroit, since I also see the number they called from.  I get no answer using a hidden number to call that Detroit phone.   but using the do not call list - I am on same - doesn't help.  but I have put them on the don't allow ring list, whatever, so I won't hear from them again. Unfortunately there is a limit to how many can be on the list but luckily changing one's number regularly, which I do ever 4 to 6 months, both reduces the cases of folks calling number again and again saying X (whom we don't know) has a large debt and we are the collection agency, etc., e.g., and allows one to block whatever calls now show up.  Good luck and be fierce, folks, and JUST NEVER ANSWER a phone from some number you don't recognize.

No one with half a brain will provide personal information to an incoming phone call.

They are a collection agency for unpaid medical bills.  However, no one should provide sensitive personal information, especially their social security number or date of birth, to establish their own identity to an incoming caller.  Just request all communications be done via mail and only via postal service.  You can research, see what they are seeking payment for and continue from there.  Satisfy debt if valid or stop calls/communications once debt is not proven yours or due.
