I received a voice message on my cell phone with a message to call 800-437-9392.  Since I had been doing some internet shopping, I expected that it was probably about those transactions on my VISA card.  However, I didn't recognize either the bank name or the phone number as being associated with my VISA card.  It sounded like the lady said something like "UM Bank" or maybe – "UN Bank" which is not the name of my bank. (I had a hard time understanding what she was saying...) My card was issued by a small bank in Eastern Washington State.

Doing a Google search, did not give me any useful information.

[However, my bank is an "ICBA" member.  (ICBA = Independent Community Bankers of America; www.icba.org) ICBA has a least one service center in Tampa, FL. ]

I called the general customer service # on the back of my card and was connected to their "Fraud & Security" division (which does use the 800-437-9392 phone number).

In my case, the phone message was legitimate.  They had called to verify that recent credit card transactions (and transaction failures) were associated with my shopping activity.  Since I had looked at the transactions online, it was easy for me to tell that the lady I spoke with had the same information my bank was providing to me.

I got the same automated call and hung up. I called the toll free number from the back of my card and they verified that the Fraud Dept had initiated a call to me and that I hung up without entering any information. I was then routed to the fraud dept who asked that I verify or dispute the last 4 transactions made on my card for the specefic amount, the specefic type of merchandise, the specefic time and specefic date. It is a courtesy call to ensure that you have posession of your card.

I got the call at my parents house, where I do not live and all my financial institutions know where to reach me.  Called the number and was asked for my credit card number.  They would not tell me the name of the company they were calling with, just that they were a third-party fraud department for my financial institution.  Of course not stupid enough to give them my info.  Called all of my financial institutions and ALL said, no we do not use third party, no we would never ask you for your card number in whole, and no we are not trying to reach you.  SCAM!!!!!!

I called them back and all they wanted to do was verify some charges that were made to my card. When I told them I was would not give them my last 4 my SSN they verified it was me by my address. The first one I gave them was my street and that did not match what they had on the account so the I gave them my PO box and it did match. All they wanted to do was verify some activity on my account for a few small ($15-$30) purchases. They knew what my correct address was, who my card issurer was, and told me who all of the companys were that I made the purchases from.

Are there possibly 2 different things going on here?

    1) a legit fraud-protection service ... that does NOT ask for your card number. They ask for the last 4 of your SSN and then, w/o asking for the card number, will read back some questionable purchases and ask for your confirmation of them.

    2) a separate, scam bunch ... that is faking the caller ID number. They are pretending to be #1 above, so they would be the ones asking for the card number (as in MD's case above)

For me ... I'll be careful ... and think about what they should already know, and what they are asking me to tell them.

    good luck to us all

I must admit that the first time I started receiving their calls, I did NOT return the calls or look into it.  I simply ignored them.  I assumed, like many of you, that it was a scam.

All of that changed, however, when my credit union decided to freeze my credit card!  Once I found out my card was frozen, I immediately contacted my credit union only to find out that the calls were legit and as I did not return their calls/verify the purchases, my card was frozen for my protection!   It took all day for them to restore service!  Luckily I have an old school ATM card from them as well so I wasn't completely screwed.

I now have the number stored in my phone so that when I get calls from them, I know it's on the up and up.  If you're not sure of any email, call, mail etc. alleging to be from one of your financial institutions/creditors, it doesn't take but a few minutes to contact your institution directly via the telephone numbers/email addresses etc that you know are legitimate to check it all out.

I have been with my credit union now for almost 13 years and everytime I make large  or "out of character" charges (ie I take a long road trip and my card starts showing up in another state), they give me a call.  The only information they will ask you for is the phone number the computer dialed and the last 4 digits of your social to verify that *you* have the right to verify charges on the account and that you are not the person who has potentially stolen the card (along with the user's phone).

All other information, they will provide to you without being asked such as the name of your financial institution and the charge information including date, time, amount and vendor.  They have called me many times and I have yet to have been robbed or otherwise duped.

I called the number back after receiving a voicemail saying that there were suspicious charges on my credit card. I got nervous when they asked for the last 4 of the social, so I hung up and called one of the numbers on the back of my credit card. I gave them this phone number, and they said it was legit, and they even transferred me through. They accurately told me my transactions, including one from 2 hours earlier, but also told me about $550 worth of fraud from the night before. Glad they called, but wish it weren't all so weird! I think another internet user on another site summed it up well by saying that this company acts like it is a fraud, but is actually okay. Figure that one out! They'd do better to call directly, and tell you to call the number on the back of the card to start with, since we all did that anyway! If it ever happens again, I will call the number on the back of my card again--best policy.

I called them back and I get an automated response to press 1 for English, I do so and they either say "unable to find my information", a message in Spanish (probably to press 2 for Spanish), or it says the name of my credit union, but no matter what they immediately hang up, weird

These people call at least 5 times a day asking for a woman who does not live here. I ask them to stop calling, but they ignore me and sometimes hang up.

I don't know who they are or whether they're scammers or not, but I wish they'd stop calling me and asking for someone I don't know of.

Is a normal fraudulent checking hotline, called both my banks when they called me, both banks said that they called me because so many debit card purchases were made in one weekend, father's day weekend and that it looked suspicious because I hardly use my debit cards that much. So it's legit.

This is a legitimate service, trying to verify charges on your card.  The charges they're trying to verify might NOT be legit -- but that's not the same.  In fact, that's the point!  That's what they're trying to help you (and your bank) catch!

I received a call (voice-mail) yesterday from 800-890-5097.  It said it was from the "fraud service center" on behalf of my credit union.  They specified the name of my bank, as well as my full name, and asked me to call 800-437-9392 to verify recent activity on my card.  When I called that number, I got an automated recording that knew the name of my bank and asked for just the last four digits of my SSN to verify recent activity.

I HAD made a large purchase that day, and the computer-voice knew enough info about me that they probably really were legit, but better safe than sorry...  so instead of entering my SSN, I hung up and called my credit union directly.

The credit union verified that it was a legitimate service call.  Their fraud services department had tried to contact me -- she even read the time of the call off of her computer.  She was able to confirm the purchase and close the case right then, though, so I didn't have to call the other number back.

It's good to be careful, and to verify with your bank if you're not sure.  But if you get one of these calls when you know you haven't made unusual purchases lately, don't assume it's THIS call that's the scam!!!

Got this voice message of possible fraud on my credit card.  This is a legitimate number!  Paranoid, I called MY number for my Visa card and explained that I received this call.  Their system verified that I had indeed received the call to my phone number. The rep transferred me to this credit card fraud call center and an automated system asked me only for the verified phone number I was calling from (same as registered with Visa) and the last four of my social.  I verified yes or no about the last three charges on my card.  If you don't trust the number--call your credit card company who should be more than happy to help you (and if not, cut it up and get another one).  Simple.  Safe.  Nice peace of mind.

After calling this company they indicated they were under contract by THINK BANK to verify credit card activity.  Because I refused to give them my last 4# of my SS # I was told to call directly to my bank.  I did so, and they indicated that the company is valid and that I should call them back. Everything turned out okay, but there's got to be a better way to confirm your identity without using your SS #.  A pre-determined Security phrase or password perhaps??

They are valid - call your bank or credit card issuer - speak with a supervisor or manager - they will confirm use of this third party service.  MANY banks use them.
