I just received a call from them asking for my social last four numbers and/or my address. They said, "Oh you'll want this information, but we need to verify your last four digits of your social or get your address."  When I wouldn't give them ANY information, they were very rude and hung up.

I have not had a student loan in many many years, all paid off.  Not sure why they are calling but the man was so rude I couldn't believe it, if they are looking for money from someone rude isn't the way to get it!

Definite scam folks.  They called my work cell phone, which isn't tied to my name directly in any way.  Unfortunately these calls are far too common nowadays, and they look to take advantage of the elderly or people who just don't know any better, phishing for personal info.  Some of these companies will buy out an old loan or even closed loan and try to get you to pay money you don't even actually owe.

The Dept of Ed makes available lists of people who are in default, deferment, or anyone who has any record of delayed or late payments to them - to any & all types of collection agencies. They are not selective, & get this info via cyber surfing I'm sure. There is no official phone call collection agency for the Fed. They just farm it out to any number of these agencies. These collection folks have little or no ethics, & frequently change their phone numbers & names in hopes to fool someone into answering the phone.
Their S.O.P. is to ask to speak to someone by their first name w/o saying who they are. If you answer a phone, and this happens just hang up unless they identify themselves first, & you want to talk with them. If you do, contact the department directly, and find who their rep is. Don't bother with these fly-by-night "collection agencies", or they will take your money without taking care of your debt.
Here's my multi-decades story--which BTW has never blemished my credit rating.
I have been totally & permanently disabled since 1996, receive monthly SSI, have not been able to work since, but continue to get these calls. My educational loan was paid monthly until I became disabled. I am in my 50's, & my loan is older than 25 years. I guess my name still appears on some of these lists despite all these factors. So, I no longer ever answer, & , if I do by mistake--or b/c of their latest sneaky tactic, I immediately hang up.  Believe me, if the government  is going to do anything like garnish etc, you will be notified by registered mail.
I do not agree with Suze Orman here. She says this is the worst debt you can have because "It will never be discharged." That is correct, but pay it when you can provide for your family, and can still afford to make the payments. Try to avoid garnishment because the last I knew was that they could take up to 25% of your net pay. But, whatever you do, do not give these underhanded collections agencies any money.

These people called today and never left a message so I disregarded it.  Later I find out that they called my daughter's boyfriend's # which we don';t even have.  How did they get this #?????? They have only been dating a short while and they don't even live in the same town....??????  They had his mom's # and the mom's cellphone # and called looking for my daughter and she owes nothing???  I am wondering how they got these phone #s when we don't even know them.  Someone named Jessica Sosa looking for my daughter.  Weird and angers me that they go to this extreme instead of just leave a message??

I received a call yester from this company. I am currently in school and none of my loans are in default as I have not even reached that point and have been paying the interest since I began school. They tried telling me that they were and that I needed to verify my information with them. I hung up on them and immediately called Great Lakes, the company who is the holder of my student loans) and asked them about it. They informed me that it was a scam and that I was not to give them any of my personal information and that my student loans are good. Well, this morning, they called me again. I informed them that I had contacted Great Lakes and they had stated that there was no issue with my account nor had it been released to anyone else and that they had informed me that this was a scam and that I was not to give them any of my personal information, nor interact with them further.

    Non-Student
This is a debt collector for student loans. If you get "Sherry", request to speak to someone else. She is quite rude and is always unwilling to help you out. It is people like her that no one answers these calls. Even after explaining your situation, this company is unwilling to assist. If you graduate with a degree that does not allow you a 5-star salary to start paying back these ridiculous loans, how can they expect you to pay? It is scumbag companies like this one that put post-graduated students in further debt.

I have personally had friends commit suicide after harassing calls from companies like this one. (If we had the money to pay back our student loans, you wouldnt be calling us. most students regret going to college due to the finacial hardship they endure afterwards.)

This company will bleed you dry to line their pockets with money. Even after i told them i had setup a payment plan, this "Sherry" said that there was none on file. Amazing how I have a deduction coming out of my bank account and yet she cannot find any payments "on record". It is companies like this that is hurting not only our economy, but humanity overall.

    Not even right
Got a letter from this "Coast Professional, Inc." saying that I owe over $8,000 in student loans. LOL! I just paid the $1,800 I actually owed to US DEPT OF ED last month and they have ZERO record of this alleged loan amount I received from this company. Furthermore, the number here doesn't even match the REAL number that I've seen for the Coast Professional, Inc. company, which is an (888) number. This number is not even on the BBB.  Idiots! Don't fall for this crap people.

This company is a scam. Due to all the data beeeches our information is being sold. I have one low student loan and I have NEVER been late on a payment. There is no reason for them to be calling me. If they really wanted to help and it was important then why do they not leave a message.

Take the time to file a complaint....

The FTC encourages consumers to file a complaint whenever they have been the victim of fraud, identity theft, or other unfair or deceptive business practices. They can do it online, or by calling the FTC’s Consumer Response Center at 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357). Although filing a complaint will not guarantee that their problem will be fixed, it can help the FTC and other agencies investigate and take enforcement actions whenever it is warranted. The FTC compiles complaint data that it receives, along with data from other agencies, into a database called Consumer Sentinel Network that is available to more than 1,800 law enforcement organizations in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The Consumer Sentinel Network allows members to spot emerging and long-term trends and helps U.S., Canadian, and Australian law enforcement agencies to combat fraud.
