I also received a call from this number. The caller asked me to verify my verbal password. I refused.

I called BOA and they knew nothing about it and also warned me of fraud & tried to sell me fraud prevention service. I got another call from the same number and after reading this blog - asked about overdrawn accounts.

I HAD AN OVERDRAWN ACCOUNT! I closed an account months ago after BOA could not explain or prevent my bill pay from drafting out of this account. (even though myself and a bank representative verified that it was not the account listed for funding..??) Each time it happened I had to call the bank and explain and hear the same answer. No one knew why this account kept popping up. Tech support had no answer.

So, I closed the account and the representative assured me that IF any overdraft fees posted the notes on the account would clear it up. It has been months and that account had been removed from my life - I thought. After reading this, I called back and asked about overdrawn accounts. The rep found the closed account with a -$35.00 balance.

I explained the scenario and she removed the fee and closed it correctly. She also verified the phone number we have all been searching 866.512.7171

It is pretty common for BOA to not know what the left hand is doing. Everyone continue to use the good common sense you have all exhibited and NEVER GIVE YOUR INFORMATION TO SOMEONE WHO CALLS YOU!! You call them.

I accidentally hung up on the number and looked on the net to check if fraudulent. I got mixed information from what I was reading. It's a valid number and has to due with an account that has been closed but hasn't quite closed and may have fees on it, it could be for overdrafts on existing accounts that you aren't closing out but I don't know. If you go in to any BOA location and have them call the number you will find this to be the case. The local BOA when I went in removed my fee on my account that was about to close and actually refunded me some money. Stop by your local Bank of America branch if you do not believe me as I did go in to my local branch. I was kinda pissed off because it took so long but hey! WaMu has free checking and savings while BOA does not. I'm kinda getting upset with BOA but at the moment it would be a pain to switch over. I am seriously contemplating it though.

the B of A writer is full of crap.  I have a B of A account, actually 3 of them and not one of them is overdrawn or ever has been.  If the phone number you provide them is access to your information then why do they want account, dob and ssn.  DO NOT EVER EVER EVER give out information.  Let them send you a letter in writing so you have PROOF.....

    weird...
Ok, so I got the call today from 866-512-7171 and immediately searched on Google for it...I read through all of this and called B of A because my account has been closed for about 2 months...come to find out the day I closed my account there was a $20.00 debit that hit, they took the $35 NSF fee off for me and I paid them their $20.  The lady told me that the # was for closed accounts either closed by the acct. holder or closed by the bank for insufficient funds for too long.  But I stand behind everyone else do NOT ever give out personal information over the phone to ANYONE who calls you, it's just not safe these days.

Ok- I read the post from the person who supposedly works for BOA. I got a call today and it felt fishy and sleazy to me. Wanted to verify my identity... Ok, so I reapeated back the phone number they called ME on and then guess what- she asks for my account password! Are you kidding me? I told her that my branch manager advised me that BOA will never ask for a password over the phone. I told her I was gonna look into this and hung up. I imediately drove to my local BOA branch and investigated my accounts and they were clueless why I would get such a call from "BOA" because my accounts were fine. Call came from 866-512-7171

My husband just received a call from this number claiming they were a Bank of America representative and asking him for account information.  He did not give them any information and told me about it when he got home.  I then went onto the Bank of America website and called customer service to see if they could verify the number.  The customer service number I called was 1.800.432.1000 http://www.bankofamerica.com/contact/?statecheck=FL&page=.  The customer service rep I talked to did verify that the 1.866.512.7171 number is a verified Bank of America number and transfered me.  Once transferred, they did ask me for my social security number which I was hesitant to give, the rep said if I didn't feel comfortable I could go to any Bank of America location.  I did end up continuing the call and the rep informed me the call was to discuss overdraft charges.  I think it's great that people are wary as it's hard to validate these kind of calls with all the schemes going on now a days but if you do want verified information that this number is real feel free to call the Bank of America customer service number and verify the number yourself.

People that are associated with the scam are cruising lists like this trying to perpetuate the scam.

They're either directly involved, or have some interest in seeing the scam perpetuated. They are also regularly
changing their "From" name so it looks like more than just one person is trying to support the scam.

Multiple people have fact-checked this info with B of A, and there's no one at B of A taking responsibility for these
    calls.

Feel free to ignore anyone that tries to legitimize calls from this number.

    dont have a BOA account
BOA Associate, I find it very disturbing that you would come online, representing Bank of America, and speaking to people as you do - it is no wonder that telemarketers and the like receiving such a 'warm' reception on the phone. I think its pretty hilarious that i have also received these calls from this very same number, and am NOT a citizen of the US, NOR do i have a BoA account.

If this really WAS Bank of America making these calls regarding someone's overdraft, then I am pretty sure the CSR's answering would KNOW the number that the caller is referring to........either that or your company policy is to keep all their employees in the dark....

I truly hope that you find a job that suits your pleasant disposition - I hear Jiffy John is hiring for clean-out techs, perhaps this is something you should look into

100 percent scam. I had a phone call from them last night. I was put on hold immediately placed on hold. When the "bank of america associate" got on the line the first question she asked me was for my address and social. When I asked her what this was in regards to, she said it was "a courtesy call about my checking account". Well I have multiple with BOA and when I asked her which one, she didn't know. I found this strange that she wanted my entire social, seeing as BOA has only asked me for the last four digits of my social. I told the "associate" I didn't feel comfortable giving this information over the phone and she quickly interrupted and said "please goto bankofamerica.com for further information" and hung up!

Well I called BOA right after this call. I have NO overdrawn accounts and BOA told me that their associates would NEVER call and ask for an entire SSN and home address for a "courtesy call".

    Well I called 866-512-7171 .

Long story short I ended up having a heated conversation with their "associate". It's such a scam. I just wanted to call this number and let them know that BOA flagged them for fraudulence and that I know they are fake.

The "associate" still ended up asking me repeatedly for my information, throughout the duration of our conversation. I finally told him "LISTEN DUDE I AM NOT GIVING YOU MY INFORMATION, SO JUST FORGET IT. YOU ARE A JOKE"

He testily replied "thousands of other customers have given their information and been satisfied with their courtesy call. sorry that you are so paranoid"

Poor thousands of people! And if he WAS a real BOA assosiate- you think they would really call their customer "paranoid"?

I received a call, I was asked for my Address and DOB.  I refused, but the guy calling was curtious and told me that people refuse all the time, but he'd put a note on my account and suggested that I either go into a branch or call the number on the back of my card.  I ended up calling the number on my card and he was telling the truth, and old account had gone $6 over and there was a note placed on it 15 minutes earlier that someone from the OD department had called me on my cell.

I still will never give out information to someone who called me, but it doesn't mean that this number was a scam, just a poorly thought out implementation.

People need to ease up on the paranoia just a bit.

I go a call from 866-512-7171. I did not recognize the number, so as I always do, I checked the number out online. Thanks for the heads up. I called my Bank and no problems with any account old or new. In fact the bank does not even have my number on file. I use my cell for contacts not my home.

I got the same call.  Supposedly from BOA on an account I don't have (I've never had an account with them for it to be overdrawn), asking for someone who isn't me (the number has been mine for about 6 years.)  THIS IS A SCAM, NO MATTER WHAT OTHERS ON THIS THREAD ARE TRYING TO GET YOU TO BELIEVE.  A bank like BOA is not going to call you about an overdrawn account.  A bank like BOA is not going to accidentally call someone who isn't a customer over an account that doesn't exist.  A bank like BOA is not going to call and ask for that much personal information.  Those that are indicating this is a legit number are either in on the scam or enjoy screwing dumb people over.  No employee of BOA is going to search for, find, and post on a site like this.  No employee of a BOA customer service department is going to treat BOA's customers as has been noted in this thread.  DO NOT GIVE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION OUT OVER THE PHONE.  DO NOT GIVE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER OUT OVER THE PHONE.  DO NOT GIVE OUT CREDIT, DEBIT, OR ATM CARD NUMBERS OUT OVER THE PHONE.  DO NOT GIVE OUT PINs OVER THE PHONE.  In fact, unless it is a confirmed number of a company you trust and involves a phone call you initiated, beware doing any business over the phone.
