Received a call from 866 842 1465 at nine a.m. today but when I answered the call was disconnected.

It's time we press our representives in office to re-evaluate allowing us to include blocking call from charities charities and those running for office.  We should have a right to block out who we don't want to get calls from.  With television and the internet, not to mention good old U.S. Junk Mail we can make informed decisions on who to vote for and what charities we want to donate to, without having our privacy being bombarded by phone calls.

Complaining here doesn't get anywhere, other than who is calling on a number.  We need to complain to our elected officials to get this stopped.

Call all the time. Hang up on us when we answer. They also let our outgoing machine message play then slam the phone. Nice.

They're a charity, so they're exempt from the Do Not Call list

Received a call from 866-842-1465 on 8/28/10.  I knew it was some kind of scam so I didn't pick up.  I'm a Disabled Vet and it makes me mad that these people are misrepresenting Veterans.  They should all be tracked down, and put in jail.  I appreciate all of the information that the rest of you have posted here.

This person called from this # and said he was calling on behalf of troops to send out "packages".  I have a strict no give credit card number policy via phone so even if I wanted to give him $ I would never give my CC.  I would demand a bill & check it out, then mail a check.  #2. My husband literally got off a plane from Iraq 10 days ago, we are on our "vacation" this week together, so I very politely said I would "pass this time."  The guy on the other end said, "Yeah, whatever, get the *@# off the phone!"    WHO IS THIS PERSON, I surely hope he really doesn't represent any real group, if he does they need to fire him!!!!!

MICH VETS :: Supposedly a charity using the shtik about "wounded Iraq & Afghanistan veterans," but it's just another  low fraud working the national phone circuit out of Michigan. Contact State of Michigan Attorney General -- Dept of Consumer Protection (877) 765-8388 to report these slimeballs.

I got a call from this number today. I asked how much money goes to support the troops.
Answer was 20% for actual support and 80% for administrative cost!

Wow, the Wikipedia link says it all.  Thank you, Jim!  This one is going on my block list, along with every other "toll free call" I receive.  They've already called me a few times (I never answer.)

This number is being spoofed by Portfolio Recovery Service, a Debt Collector trying to create an account.

I rec'd a call from this number at 7:40 p.m.  He could'nt have been nicer .  He said he was calling to ask if I wanted to help our troops still in Iraq by sending them "care packages".  He wanted to mail a card regarding that.  I explained I was ill, and we were financally strapped.  If I could, I probably would. He was very polite and wished me well and thanked me for my time.

Soooo........that was my experience with this number.  Whether it's bogus or not???????? Maybe I got an extra smooth operator!

But I have discovered, especially in these times, it is always wise not to  agree to anything over the phone. If they can't mail you info maybe they are'nt legit!

Foundation for American Veterans

Calls my house repeatedly but usually no one is on the other end. Today, someone was on the other end and he said he was a fundraiser working to raise money for care packages for our troops overseas but that they didn't take anything over the phone and if he sent me a card, could I send some small donation back. I said 'no' because I don't want to give out my personal information so that I can get a solicitation in the mail.

It irritates me that 'charities' are excluded from the DNC list. Grrr...

I returned the call and a recorded message says it is the Foundation for American Veterans, a non-profit organization.  They are not rated by www.CharityNavigator.com, and have not responded to requests for info from the BBB.  One article http://www.military-money-matters.com/foundation-for-american-veterans.html says that they spend only 6% of the money raised on their program causes, and most of it on fundraising expenses.  

If you feel like talking to them, you might ask them to explain that, and why they do not provide their financial statements.

Does this sort of comment help anyone?  Please only contribute useful information else you are just cluttering up the message board.
