Not sure what this is about.  Just wanted to report.  I recently updated my ebay account and other callers said they had gotten a call after communication with ebay too.  Please look into this,

I was left a message that asked me to call back because someone had made a credit inquiry and they wanted verification. They left a message for me to call but the phone number and a reference number.  I called the number but it was closed because it was an eastern time. I don't know that I'm going to call him back after seeing all these other references. They are calling themselves  customer security.

Same as all the rest. 877-981-2126 was the call back number (called me on 888-361-0687 ), gave a reference number.  said it was Paypal security  dept. Phony baloney.  I called Paypal direct, and they said never called me, not them.  Scam. Block the number. Obama(govt) please help stop this activity.

Got a call from 877 981-2126 with case #.  Claimed it was paypal -someone trying to setup an acct.  Called paypal.  Was not them.  Must be effort to steal information.

Received a voicemail this morning, so I Googled it because I suspected a scam, and it landed me here. Caller ID showed 888-361-0687. The disturbing thing is that the name they asked for is contained in my Paypal email address, but is not my real name. Why is this scam still operating in 2017 after so many reports of the same phishing operation? Here is the transcript of the message:
" This message is for Blake. My name is Kate and I'm calling from the Paypal credit customer security department. This call is in regards to a recent application attempt, so if you could please give us a return call at 877 981-2126 at your earliest convenience, it will be greatly appreciated. Please have reference number 180056695050 available when you call. Thank you, and have a nice day.

PayPal and I don't give any information over the phone. But they are still at it. Had my name and gave a reference number like the others.

Call from someone named AJ at Pay Pal customer security regarding my recent application. He left this number and a reference number.  I called Pay Pal directly and they had no evidence of such a call.  It is a scam.

On July 6, 2017, CreditKarma alerted me to a hard inquiry from PayPal Credit on my TransUnion credit report. I confirmed with TransUnion directly and called the real PayPal Security Dept. PayPal had no knowledge of this action. Next day, received a voicemail on my home phone identical to the one posted in this forum. I have a fraud alert placed on all three major credit bureaus and yet someone was still able to initiate a hard pull. Currently, I'm in the process of having this removed from my credit report as it was not my doing!

Receivedthat someone was trying to obtain credit in my name. Said call back to 877-981-2126. The call actually came from 888-361-0687. Based on information above, I'm treating this as a SCAM. Thank you everybody for sharing!!!

Call on 11/5/2018 from 1-877-981-2126 giving me a reference # and asking me to call back regarding a PayPal account setup inquiry. Googled the number, found this page and am waiting for a call back from the real PayPal customer service.
