Wow!!!....looking at these responses!!!!......I think there are some good points made here by most of you!
but, I think the initial frustrations with Bill Collectors are they fail to see and/or treat People as Human Beings who are behind in debt. Now we all know there are some who could care less about paying their obligations!!!.....but I am sure that this is about maybe 8% of those in debt. Some have ht hard times, due to Medical, Loss of Job, Higher Taxes Lower Earnings...etc...etc. Or just plain bad Planning and let's not forget such items as Divorce, child support from the group of things that "I DID NOT WISH FOR MY LIFE TO BE LIKE THIS" list.

Remember, chances are the person on the other end of the phone communicating all the threats to you about lawsuits and credit reports is a low wage earner, who is trying to make money just to get by!

But YOU DO HAVE RIGHTS!!....As Defined under various Federal and state laws regarding your debts and the actions of collection agencies attempting to recover such debts. Take some time to learn and view Your RIGHTS....The Last agency that called me about a $265.00 bill got SUED FOR $3,000 for violating my rights. So...NO MATTER HOW MUCH DEBT YOU MAY FIND YOURSELF IN.....LEARN YOUR RIGHTS AND USE THEM!!!....Start by reading the "TRUTH AND FAIR CREDIT LENDING ACT" and Good luck to you ALL!

I'm not sure why I got a call at 9:23 am on 12/29 since I have no student debt. I wonder if this is one of those cases where people gave out our number or someone misdialed. I never talked to these people and no name was given on the answering machine.

    NOT HAPPY
I just got a call from this number. They were looking for a relative of mine. I asked them how they got my number and they said that I was listed as a family contact. GREAT. I never gave this family member permission to use me as a reference or anything. I do know this family member has horrible financial issues and has student loan debt so I'm guessing they are calling me to get to her because of that. NOT HAPPY that they tracked me down and are bothering me when it is not my debt and I didn't give permission to be used as a reference. Excuse me while I track down this family member and tell them the same thing, just in not-so-nice of terms.

    NOT HAPPY
Just saying....after reading the above responses....it could be that you are receiving these calls for the same reason I am, because someone else put your name and number on their loan application as a reference. The funny thing is, there is a huge custody battle going on with this family member and since she is an addict and has been arrested several times for drug issues, I testified against her in court and she said then that she considered me "estranged" and not a part of her family yet lists me as a reference.  Desperate and sad.

Nancy Lola Campney they say Hall
I have a call come to a relative asking for a name I no longer use.  The call comes as "Unknown Name" on caller id but reverse look up says it is a collection agency known as Premier with a history of discreditable activity.
Reported to President Obama of credit collection agencies that write to you with disclaimer that they have to credit their account if payment is made to any company except theirs.
If the Education Department of the United States government can't hire the persons to do a creditable job then why use the less trusted companies????

    no loans no debts
I have no student loans and no unpaid debts and for anyone interested there are laws governing the collection practices of debt collectors. Try looking up FDCPA laws or fair debt collection practices act. Or write a Cease and Desist is a letter you can wrrite requesting all correspondence be in writing and the calls should stop.

    Rocketman
Collection Agency for student loans. I have dealt with my share of debt collectors. These people have been by far the best and esiest to work with. Very understanding of the law and they stick to it. They did call my work number because they had no other information on me, I called them back and request not to be contacted at that number again and they agreed. Set up a time to talk to them about the student loans and ended up working out a good agreement. They are failrly easy to work with, set up an appointment to talk to them. Give yourself time to prepare educate your self on your rights, the debt, the amount, and have everything that you may need at hand. They will start by telling you all about the debt and telling you payment options, will give you different amounts. But if you feel it is too high, or you are concerned that it will put you in a difficult position, just tell them. You dont have to accept any payment plan, they know that. They also know that if they do take you to court, the judge will be pretty reasonable on how much you can pay, and they will often match that prior to that point. Negotiate with them and push the payment down. Most importantly, answer the call. These people must answer to the dept of Education, and if at anytime you feel they are being unfair or not treating you right just call the Ombudsman at the Dept. of Education.
