So while this is american express fraud prevention, sometimes the number shows up and unknown and sometimes it shows up as this auctual number. Now it is easy to 'spoof' or fake caller id and make it seem like a call is coming from a certain number when it is in fact not. It really comes down to what questions the person on the phone asks. They will never ask you to 'verify' any information, that is to say, they will never ask you to disclose any information, E.g. "Let me verify your social security, please give it to me" "Let me verify your birthday and moms maiden name etc". They will however ask you to verify stuff like "Did you make this charge for $xxx amount from "garys plumbing". This is extremely confusing to the customer and only the most savvy, professionally trained people will be able to properly screen these phone calls. American express needs to change this procedure. They need to say ' Please call the number on the back of your card to verify charges ' that way the customer KNOWS this one simple rule "Amex will never CALL ME and ASK ME information." Rather than having all these caveats. This is a nice loophole carders use to this day 8/18/2015. Amex is normally very ship-shape with their security. I was surprised to see such a gaping security gap in their procedures.

I am professionally trained and certified PCI DSS 3.0 QA. I also have 6+ years experience doing 'penetration tests' or 'ethical hacking'. I am a 'trained weapon' in the same way a marine is a 'trained weapon' . I use my skills for good, because I want to have a normal life with a high salary and a rewarding job. I literally have 10+ years experience and 4+ years specific schooling and training for this and I was even unsure what to do here. Turns out, the call was legitimate. However, I hung up and said I never speak to amex unless I call them after 20 seconds. So I had to call back (the number on the back of my card, that is the only number I will ever call), talk to fraud, who wouldn't verify me over the phone with information and would only speak to me if THEY called me. I said the only way I will allow that is if we agree on a code word and the same person calls me back in the next 5 minutes,. Now instead of a 'codeword' you can just ask the nice person their name and recognize their voice, but I was angry that AMEX security was blowing so much [***]. Come on AMEX, your supposed to be the industry leader in security. Very disappointing. I am going to format my laptop now, because either it is compromised, or one of my recent vendors is compromised. I don't take chances though. If it is compromised, their key logger should pick up this message if it's not just cherry picking passwords. I hope they are reading this message.

It does appear legitimate, at least for me.  But I think it's very wise to be careful here since the scammers just get more and more devious.  If you call back the main number on your card - which is what I did - write down the "reference number" from the voicemail they left you.  That unlocks the information AmEx customer service needs.  When I called the main number, they did confirm it was a call to just confirm some suspicious activity on my account which was in fact legitimate.

    Scam Alert
Scam Alert -- Fake Fraud Department is After Your Credit Card Code

Scammers Pose as Credit Card Fraud Department

    http://www.bbb.org/council/news-events/bbb-sc ... edit-card-code/

A fraudulent fraud department? It may sound too wacky to be true, but scammers are now pretending to be from credit card companies' fraud departments. It's a trick to get you to reveal your card's security code.

    How the Scam Works:

You answer the phone, and the caller says he/she is from your credit card's security department. This "fraud specialist" tells you that there's suspicious activity on your card. He makes up a bogus transaction and asks if you authorized it. When you reply that you never made the purchase, the "fraud specialist" offers to open an investigation into charge. The scammer may even give you a fake case number for reference.

Everything seems normal until the scammer asks one last question. Under the guise of verifying that the credit card is in your procession, he requests the security code on the back of your card. Don't give it to him; it's a scam!

In this particular con, identity thieves already have your information. They know your name, credit card number, phone number and address. Now, all they need is the security code on the back of your card. If you share it, you give the con artist the information he needs to wrack up charges in your name.

What To Do if a Fraudulent Fraud Department Calls:
•Don't give the caller any information about your account - even if he already knows some of the details.
•Pick up the phone. Call the customer service number on the back of your credit card. Talk to the fraud or security department and ask about the unauthorized charges the caller told you about.
•Phone numbers can deceive. Some con artists use Internet technology to disguise their area code in Caller ID systems. Although it may look like they're calling from your credit card company, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.

Your an idiot.   Total scam     They tell you to call the number on the back of the card because they want to look legit.  They called me last night and I didn't answer the phone he left no message called again today and when I answer the phone call  it took 15 seconds for the voice recorder to start speaking.  Told me to call that number back or call the card    Most people will just call that number like I did   I called and I didn't  have my AMEX card on me but they were asking for the whole card number  I didn't enter it.    Then some dude in India picked up the phone.  When I told him I didn't have my card on me he asked for my full Social Security number     This would never happen       I can't believe the scammers actually get on here and act like they are American Express reps responding and defending  to people saying this is a scam and then other idiots actually believing that

Be careful. I see lots of reports here saying this is a legit # for AMEX - however it could be "cloaked" by scammers.
I got the call - and the curious thing is that I don't have an AMEX. I thought maybe someone was trying to apply with my phone number so I called it. An automated message picks up and asks for you to put in your card number and expiration - This is Fraud.
    BE CAREFUL!

I am satisfied that this is a valid number for AMEX. When I called in, however, there was no fraud on any active account I have with AMEX. The most likely explanation is that someone gave a wrong phone number (my work phone number) on *their* account.

I got an email from this with the number to call back.  I called the number on the back of the card and customer service didn't know this number.  So I saw it was supposedly from their fraud department. They confirmed the number was theirs.  The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.  For best security always call the number on the back of the card.

The number 1-888-800-5234 is a fraud!!!!! Do not listen to others that claim that this number is from AMEX, IT IS NOT. I received a call from this number and spoke to a woman, who had a bad accent, and was told that my Macy AMEX account was compromised. I got concerned when I heard the voices of children in the background. I called the number on the back of the card and got directly to the customer service department that told me that they had heard of this number before and told me that this is a fraud.

Called and said were investigation a possible fraudulent charge to my American Express, asked to confirm my Amex card number and date of birth and then asked for the security pin number. When I did not give the 4 digit pen number, they asked me email it. At this point it sounded like a scam, so I stated so and they hung up. I will be keeping a constant look out on my card to determine if anyone tries to make an unauthorized charge. Oct 20 2016

Women asked me by name, says she is from Amex fraud, I seriously challenged her before she said much, I basically told her she was a phony because I know Amex would have reached out to me on SMS Alerts that I have setup on my account. I later verified that there had been no compromises to my account.

    Caller ID Spoofing
CALLER ID SPOOFING - just google it.

I called Am Ex as well and they said this is indeed their number.  That DOESN'T matter!!!  Anyone can make any number show up on your caller ID if they have the right software.  You can call your buddy and make "the White House" show up on his caller ID.  They're hoping that when you see a legit number on your caller ID, you'll answer the phone and answer their questions believing it is the actual Am Ex people.  "Caller ID spoofing" ... seriously google it!

I answered a call supposedly from AmEx. I had already called them last week when I received an AmEx card I had never applied for. The lady I spoke to assured me that she would cancel the account. (I called the number on the back of the new card.). The call today had American Express for the caller ID. Today's caller immediately wanted to ask me a few questions. The first question out of his mouth was my name. Next he wanted my full SS number. Um, no, don't think so. I told him not doing that so he asked for last 4 numbers. I said nope. He called me so why didn't he already have this info? I never applied for the card and don't want it. I finally lost it and yelled that I think he's a fraud and I hung up.   I'm still shaking.
