1-888-563-5234. They said it was Microsoft Edge & that my computer had been hacked.  I knew it was a scam!

Someone called our business from this number stating they were AT&T and they noticed our long distance billing had been changed to another company and asked if we would like to change it back to being billed through AT&T so we would have only one bill.  I said sure and then he proceeded to talk real fast almost where I could not understand him.  He then told me he would connect me to someone else that could change our billing back to AT&T.  Then that man started talking real fast and he threw in the name of another company.  I stopped him and said wait I thought it was going to be AT&T.  He hung up on me.  I think this is some sort of scam.  I just don't think he got to whatever it was he was after.  A legitimate business would not hang up like that.

In some of the other comments people are saying that its AmEx fraud department.  If a company like AmEx calls and asks for your SS# its fraud.  They already have your number and have other ways of verifying who you are.  Never never give your SS# to anyone on the phone.  I don't know who these people are but I think its some kind of scam.

This is a fraud line.  It is not American Express.  Do not give these people your Card Number.  It is a scam.  I called AMEx and they do not have such  a number.  Be careful.  Only use the telephone number on the back of your card.

This is a LEGIT call from AMEX Fraud Department. You can call directly the number on the back on your card if you have any concern, and say "Fraud Department" so you are redirected.

I just called AMEX. They said the number is legitimate. You can always call the number on the back of the card if you have security concerns.

There is another side to this issue. Scammers now routinely spoof numbers and names that show in your caller ID.  The best and safest way to handle these calls:
- Thank the caller and get any important referance info.
- Do not confirm or offer personal identifying info, user names or passwords
- Hang up and call a number you know is good and that you dial yourself.

I was called from this number and asked for my mother and my mother in law and was given a reference number.  Since I was not on the account the woman by the name of Crystal. I asked her for the last 4 digits of the account that I can let my husband know which account it was, and she hung up on me.  THIS IS TOTAL FRAUD!!!!!.

The additional card # was stolen, and American Express detected the fraud usage somehow.
This number is real call from them as an suspicious activity alert. The new card is coming tomorrow.

Brandy called to verify information about an account opened by Jean or Dean Russell Jr to my cell phone number.  I called them back at 888-800-5234 to tell them they were calling the wrong number for this person.  I explained to a live person what the issue is.  The "human" I spoke to kept referring to my account application and wanted to verify my ID with my bank.  I was on hold for about 30 minutes before I decided to hang up.  I was never asked to give them the reference number for the call I recieved.  I checked the number status before calling the number to make sure I wasn't being scammed.  I swear it sounded like I was talking to a scam.

I received a text message from AMEX to call 888-800-5234, they  have a request to replace my card, I don have a AMEX card. My credit reports dont list AMEX, which makes me believe this is just a scam. I will keep a eye on my credit reports.

Scam/ /We don't accept American Express/Told that to the Indian scammer the first time they called yet they've called 5 times since.  Finally blocked the number.  If it was a legitimate call that AmEx would know that  we don't accept their card and wouldn't be calling

We've also seen scammer post on sites like this claiming to have  received calls from a number and it was legitimate.  In 30+ years of business, we've never used or accepted AmEx. so they wouldn't have our phone number.  Visa, Mastercard, & Discover, credit cards we accept, have business owners names as contacts.  When you get a call from someone asking to talk to the manager, as 888-800-5234 does,then that's a scam.

To Future Readers and Posters - Please be aware that shills for this scam have been posting here to mislead you. The volunteers on this site try to report all of these posts, but we do miss a few here and there.

It’s a legitimate number from American Express but it’s also spoofed by spammers. Plus even when Amex is calling you from it, nothing happens when you answer it, which is Amex’s fault. Safest thing to do is not answer it and then dial the number back manually  - if it was legit, Amex will ask you to verify certain charges.

Even safer idea would be to call the number on your AMEX card!

I just finished speaking to the AMEX Identity Protection Team.  I called the number on the back of my card because I received a voicemail on a phone number that I don't have in my AMEX account that was a technologically generated voice asking to return a call to them ASAP. The AMEX Identity Protection Team confirmed that there is no suspicious activity on my account and that the call I received from 888-800-5234 were scammers who had masked their phone number to look as though they were calling from this legitimate AMEX phone number.
