Got it yesterday.  I did the zip code but stopped with it asked for the last 4 digits of my social.  That was a big red flag even though the automated message said Verizon I knew they wouldn't ask for that info.  And if they did I wouldn't give it to them.  Verizon or authorities please catch these people!

haha nfw first thing i did was google the number and I ended up here and a few other sites complaining of the same thing.

"To avoid interruption of your Verizon Wireless service, please call 888-821-0284 or press the send key on your phone. This is a free text message." Sounded like they were trying too hard to get me to dial the number so I knew it had to be fake!

I received a txt from 900070001226 asking me to call verizon at 8888210284.  Thanks to these posts, I didn't call the number back. I didn't call them back because it seemed sketchy.  These posts confirmed my suspicions. Thanks!

As of July 31, 2008, this message is back, exactly as described above except the send number is 900070004223.  I Googled it, and found this page.  Thanks to those who have gone before me!

Ditto, from 900-070-002543. Called Verizon and the guy said to just ignore it. When I asked if they had a department that collects these, he said no. That was a bit dissapointing!

I went on to send a reply msg (press the send key ain't call-back-key on my phone ^^). Got a msg back almost immediately:

I guess I am not the first one.  Got a message for me to call 888-821-0284 to avoid interruption of my verizon service. Thanks to all previous postings. Big scam!

I am unsure why Verizon hasn't done anything to fight this with its customers posting about it since at least May here and earlier on some other boards....

i got this, too.  i called and the number put me right through to collections...it asked me for my password (my account is password protected) and no other information.

I received the text message and so did my mom. We have a family account and she did call the phone number (the number that the text is from isn't the one they want you to call). And she did give the info and they were just telling her that her bill was late. So this is legit. The last 4 digits of your social security are used as a password, if you don't want it to use those change your account password.
So in the end: LEGIT

I disagree w/ kyttie (see above 0n 16 Sep 2008).  Verizon would NEVER have you enter your last for of your social.  It's a scam, because I checked online first and my bill was NOT late.

You guys who say this is legit are either fools or in on the scam. Haven't you learned to never ever ever give your information over the phone unless you yourself physically dial a number that is already verified to be correct? Of course they're going to make up a story about a late bill and ask for your password so now they have your info. Geez people.

Okay, you guys seriously need to think.  If you have a verizon phone, dial 611.  That takes you directly into Verizon.  Ask them.

Plenty of people have verified it.  I was suspicious too.  Turns out it is probably legit.  I didn't call the number, but it turns out that my wife did forget to pay the bill last month, so there is good reason for them to be contacting me.  I really think they should have some way of letting you know it is legit though, like using your full name even, or something.

No - don't be stupid! It is a fake number, I just got the same thing, and looked on other websites and they confirmed. You NEVER give out personal information like that!
