This is legit.  I contacted Verizon Wireless using 611 and they confirmed that it is a text that is automatically sent out when your bill is late.  Sure enough, my bill was late.

Just use 611 because then if you are skeptical, you will at least know the phone number that you are calling.

LOL the people posting it's legit are in on the scam. Go die in a fire and work for your money. It's a scam, if you go through with it, expect charges on your verizon account every month via these goons. Get a real job.

I'll tell you all what exactly is going on here. Verizon Wireless engages in a practice called 'cramming', in which they are required by law to bill you for third-party services. (Like, for example, you have a confidential billing site charge your phone bill for *coughporncough*.) What has happened here, is a third party has called you, and if you provide them with any of your information, they will count that as a 'service' that will appear on your bill as a third party charge, which verizon will collect from you, and the third party will subsequently collect from them. The people who dialed *611 are not necessarily incorrect, but may have been completely fooled as to the nature of the call.

If you don't want to be charged a ridiculous amount for third-party services on your Verizon bill, do NOT respond to this text message.

My billing is automatically taken out of my account. I just checked and nothing's happened to interrupt that. It's literally impossible for me to be late and I got this text.

    Scam.

    Dave...
My experience... yesterday and this morning.

I received the message yesterday and ignored it.  This morning I was about to hit send and decided to research.

First went to their site and the customer service number was different.
I then google the phone number.
One site said all good stuff.  This site said all bad.
    I did *611 instead.

I was overdue by exactly 2 payments...  Looks as though when my business moved the bills were not received so my assistant failed to pay.

As soon as I paid at Verizona *611, I received a text message from the same 900-number.  Obviosly the two are connected...  The "fake" knew I made a payment...900-070-00474

I am not in on any "scam".  If I missed anything and this is still a scam...  beware...

got a text message from the number telling me to call the other number IT IS NOT A SCAM it is the finacial department at verizon letting you know that your payment is late. verizon always asks for the last 4 digits of your social or your password no matter if you call them at the 1-888-821-0284 or 611. AGAIN IT IS NOT A SCAM IT IS VERIZON

I also received the same text message and phone calls from 949 286 3311.  I am on a family plan with my parents, and therefore on the same bill. They are the primary numbers and neither of them have been called or texted. I call SCAM!

i got the text message this morning and i called the 888 number. i got the automated voice thing asking for a password and social, but i just kept pressing the pound key till i was able to speak to someone in person. To say the least, the guy i talked to wasn't helpful and you couldnt understand him. and the second i said that my sister was the owner of the account, he said he couldnt do anything for me. (because he knew I didn't have her info.) there were long pauses in between the convo as well, and he didn't sound legit.
i would say its a scam.

I got the same message and I am also on a shared plan, I am not the account holder so entering my SS# would be absolutely useless to Verizon, furthermore Verizon would know that I have nothing to do with the main account. So to those of you that say this is legit I have some awesome money orders that i keep getting in the mail from Nigeria, you can have them. You could make $15,000 in one day.

Um, if you call verizon, they WILL ask you for the last 4 digits of your social security number for a security measure...so will most credit card companies, mortgage companies etc. It is to verify that you are the account owner. They will also ask you for it if you buy/upgrade your phone over the phone or online. They may even ask you for your mother's maiden name or other info to verify that it is you. Would you rather they not ask any security questions so anyone can just call up and ask questions and receive answers on your account? I have been with verizon wireless for 6 years and they will send this text message if the bill is a little late or if they received information that you may have a new address. Those of you getting the "to avoid service interruption" texts, they will indeed cut off your service if you do not pay within a couple of days of receiving that message. You may also receive automated voicemails with the same number and information. Your verizon service agreement/contract states that they may attempt to collect a debt by calling/texting your cell. When you get a csr on the phone, they will further verify your info but only with security questions that they are ALLOWED to ask...such as last 4 of social, mother's maiden name, verifying your address and so on. The last 4 of your social will not get anyone very far...and remember that verizon wireless already has your whole social from when you opened the acct in the first place. Long story short, if your bill is paid by the due date and you did not move without telling them then you will not be getting these texts/emails. I have called the number back when I was late a couple of times, made payment by phone and everything was fine...it posted to my account and came out of my bank acct as verizon wireless. The reason why you find so many posts on google stating its a scam is because 1. most people do not realize that companies you have accounts with are permitted to ask the last 4 of your social; 2. those who do not have unlimited calling or texting get annoyed because they think they will get charged if they call or text back, and 3.they do not go on verizon's website to see that the phone number is actually listed on their website for financial services...google is good, but chat forums aren't accurate about everything.

You guys are idiots.  It sends you to Verizon (official) financial services because your bill hasn't been completely paid for the month.  Verizon always asks for a password or last four of your social to verify you have the right to access account information.

I got this call too , however I don't even have a Verizon account ! So I would call that a scam ! or a telemarketing call which is not legal as I am on the do not call list, they get You to call them so they can say they didn't call You ! It's a SCAM either way and if thats the way Verizon works I wouldn't use them even if I could get a signal from them ! ( Which I Can't , so much for the map ! LOL )

More proof it's a scam.  I just got the text message saying "Please make a payment by dialing #PMT (#768) from your wireless phone or call Verizon Wireless at 888-821-0284.  This is a free text message."

As has already been mentioned, Verizon uses 611, not 768, not to mention, why would Verizon billing need to inform me that they are sending me a "free" text message?  BUT, the real clincher is that I have 1 of 5 phones on our family plan and I am NOT the billing contact and I have NEVER been notified about the bill being overdue.  It's bogus and those on here stating otherwise are liars and thieves.

This is NOT A SCAM.  I understant and completely encourage healthy skepticism here.  But before you go all conspiracy theory on us, do so "actual research" with original sources.  It turns out from my own research from Verizon's official website (where I pay my bills online and review my payment history), that is is a REAL COURTESY TEXT from Verizon.  In a day and age of Idetity Theft running amok, it's always hard to believe it when a legitimate message gets through.  This means that you either didn't pay your bill on time, or their records show that you missed a payment (right or wrong is beside the point).  This is NOT a scam from somebody tring to steal the last 4 digits of your SSN.  A "real" scam artist wouldn't ask for the last 4 but rather for the whole darn thing.  The logical reason they only ask for your last 4 is because you already gave them your entire SSN when you bought your phone in the first place.  RELAX people.  This one's legit.

Agreed.  This is legit.  If you're skeptical like I was, call the customer service number from their official Verizon web site. You'll find out the hard way that you're not being farmed for the last 4 of your SSN - you're just being nudged for your payment.  At least in my case, their records online show a late payment even though my bank statement says otherwise.  RELAX people of earth... We Come In Peace.
