I have been getting calls from Vanquis regarding my credit card to our landline and straight after this number rings my mobile number. Obviously there must be some connection to Vanquis. I haven't been answering calls from this number.

Your message is misleading. Vanquis CAN NOT send in the bailiffs until they get a county court judgement against you. If they apply for a CCJ you have 14 days to respond to it. Respond by saying you do not have a contract with them which is TRUE. A contract must be signed by two people and Vanquis didn't sign anything, so the document you have when you signed up is an agreement, not a contract.

However, by LAW (Bills of Exchange Act) you must have contract or you owe them nothing. Write to the CEO at Vanquis and ask for a copy of the original contract signed by both parties - I promise you they haven't got one.

If you do get a CCJ it is extremely unlikely they will send in the bailiffs, and even then it will only be after 30 days (probably several months) but there is an extremely high chance that Vanquis will sell on the debt before it goes to court, especially if they don't think they are likely to get anything. That's why you should never agree to pay anything.

In the meantime go online to your Vanquis account and change the phone numbers you have registered. It won't stop the current calls but if they sell the debt on it will mean that the debt is sold on with the new numbers in place. Put in one of the numbers that keeps calling you.

Incidentally the callers are just self employed debt collectors who only get paid anything if they get a payment or agreement to pay out of you. Pick the phone up, answer it, don't say anything asked just leave it on hold. It's costing THEM money every time so don't worry about it and remember, they're only ordinary people who are probably as skint as you.

Also try having a bit of fun with them. It removes the stress. Say, "Hello, Trading Standards office" or "BT Nuisance Calls Investigation Department, can I help you", or try asking them for THEIR full name, address and date of birth. I guarantee you they will hang up.
