T-Mobile thieves sell on 500,000 customers' data

A mobile phone company employee sold the details of half a million customers to a former colleague for thousands of pounds, a court heard.

Darren Hames, 39, stole the 500,000 items of data from T-Mobile, where he was a highly-paid area sales manager, to David Turley, 40, who had set up his own business to cash in on the scam.
Technology experts said the case, which is the first of its kind, would have led to customers being 'cold-called' with inducements to switch to rival phone companies.

It is an alarming demonstration of how easily personal data can fall into the hands of criminals, they added.

The men were yesterday ordered to pay back more than £70,000 as details of their crimes emerged.

Hames simply copied the information - including names, addresses and phone numbers - about customers whose contracts were due to expire on to a memory stick, and handed it to Turley at a McDonald's outlet.

Investigators found he had promised to supply Turley - whom he met when both worked at a T-Mobile office in the West Midlands - with details of 30,000 customers a month. Turley sold this on to a business targeting customers to switch to a rival operator.

Following a two-year investigation by the Information Commissioners Office, Turley pleaded guilty to 18 breaches of the Data Protection Act by obtaining, disclosing and selling the data between 2007 and 2008. Hames admitted two counts.

Yesterday at Chester Crown Court, Turley, of Birmingham, was ordered to surrender £45,000 under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Hames, of Stone in Staffordshire, was told to pay £28,700.

If they fail to hand over the money within six months they go to jail for 18 months and 15 months respectively.

The scandal is embarrassing for T-Mobile, which was accused of failing to protect confidential information.

It also led to calls for a toughening of the law on data theft to enable those caught selling personal information - or failing to protect it from theft - to be jailed rather than simply fined.

A T-Mobile spokesman said: 'We hope this serves as a significant warning to those who seek to profit from unlawfully obtaining customer data'

I just had the same experience. Thought it was a woman in a busy pub calling. Just would not take no for an answer. When I asked what nunber I can call back on she said "this one" - she didn't even give me her number.

They keep calling me every day, I never answer and they never leave a message. Looking at the other posts it seems to be about mobile phones. I'm with Virgin, have never been on T-Mobile (though I did order a SIM card from them once, never used it).

I get called every day & am sick of it, they never leave a mesage & I don't answer,

Please stop calling me all hours of the day and night as I am not interested in any of your products.

I have just had a call from someone who has been receiving calls from this number, I have dialled the number and there is an option to unsubscribe........thought this may help someone

Just had a call from this number from a guy telling me the same as has been stated throughout. Gave him a lesson in communications marketing and left him speechless!
So, now I have the number stored in my phone, I will play along next time and keep them on the phone for ages until I have finished playing with them. It's their bill calling a mobile :)
Another of my tricks is to tell people like this to "hold on a mo while I get the owner/occupier" then I go and make a cup of tea or something, leaving them with nobody to talk to.

Called me a few times. Keep missing it but now Ive seen these I wont be answering it. I Never have credit to call back thankfully!

i dont know who this number is  calling my mobile but it so annoying as im deaf  cant hear phone and text only ,
i rejected this call and still got charged for it too  grrrrrrrrrr  bloody  nuicance calls

Had 2 calls a day from this number (since i didn't renew with T-mobile, which also involved cpw), answered the other day, they claim to be from 3, demanded to be taken off their list and wasn't very nice to them. Calls stopped for a couple of days and have started again.

6 calls in 4 days - I didn't answer at first but when I did answer there was no-one there

They have constantly called 3 to 4 times a day for two weeks. I kept rejecting. Now they have changed their number that they are calling from to 01267 222544.

got a call from this number, when in spain, did not let me answer, had no intentions in calling back!!!!

This number has called me about 5 times a day for the past 4 days now, I will not pick up. Hopefuly they will stop soon

Ive got annoying calls all day from this number.Ive havnt answered them but googled this number when i got home to find out this number is spam.Im on a 02 contract, is this where they got my number?????Dont answer and dont reply.
