I joined the telephone preference service and I don't expect to get silent calls any more. This number has called me twice in the last 2 days and I don't want them to call again.
It should be illegal for companies to constantly pester people with silent calls. It's bad enough when you have to talk to these people.

These people have phoned my 8 year old daughter's mobile phone 11 times asking to speak to a Mr Mills - at 8 I'm sure my daughter has no need for insurance and I'm pretty sure she doesn't know a Mr Mills!!!! Maybe I should follow the advice of someone who posted earlier and ask for info then return the the pre-paid envelope with a load of junk in it.

    a massive impressive mess
This number calls me nearly every other day, even on sundays !
sadly for them im a very funny guy ;]

so after reading various articles written on here and on other sites, ive now opted for playing them ;]

eg: i am not a santander customer and have had no dealings with homeserve ?

in my opinion it would have been due to one of the estate agents we used while searching for our house , purchased last year.
being as i recall one individual in perticular that was a pain in the bum. eg: tried selling me home insurance and also tried to arrange a financial phone interview with some firm whose name escapes me. phoned me persistantly and just seemed to find my suggestions of "no" to be spoken in an alien
dialect ,however i do find the unscrupulous tactics used by banks, estate agents and insurance firms  to make money kind of disturbing.

so what do i do ?

simple for me really ( hehehe ) i was given the gift of being able to provide rather good voice overs as a child, and as you can imagine this is a gift that i have moulded over the years , and as such i always like  to entertain their questions whith complete pork & mustard.

for example, they called me earlier, asked for me by name, and found themselves speaking to morgan freeman,.....last week i pretended to be sean connery , johnny vegas, joe pasqualli, dustin hoffman, anthony hopkins, etc

however ! you dont have to be rory bremner in order to pretend to be someone else.

for example.........ive even pretended to be a guy called brian from leicester , and suggested my mums , dads sisters step daughters dad works for the company that they do , and even endevoured to ask them if they happen to know him !! ( this works just as well in a liverpool accent or an irish scottish welsh asian accent etc. you get the picture.)

in fact i am thinking of installing "voip cheap" on my pc and then phoning the number back and recording it,....so i can pop it on u tube ;]

either way, if they have to phone you in order to ask you sensitive info then they must be scamming.
and the call costs them money.
i have also heard that it is possible to set up a landline premium number that charges silly money if for example its called by an outside line hehehehe ,
failing that, i am tempted to redirect my telephone number via my pc, and then aquire a few other numbers and redirect them also,..........sooooooooo they get to pay through the nostrils just to speak with morgan freeman lol.

try the pretend thing, trust me,......you will end up much happier than previously ,eg: when they just wound you up every other day.

];make a mess ;[ ...................................................then runaway lol

    Hi all

Have had so many calls from this number to my mobile, over 10 since Monday and that is just this week. They phone all times of the day and at weekends too and I am really annoyed by it. Unfortunately there are times when you have to give out your number and I know that certain companies then pass this on, even places like your insurance company and that is something we all have to have. My tip is to only give out my mobile to companies, never my home number, the only people that have the number for my house are people that I actually know personally eg. family and friends, this means that I can turn my mobile off so I don't get disturbed by these people when I'm busy, but people that really need to contact me still can.

With regard to the silent calls I've had that with a few numbers that have called me over time, which are all sales companies of some sort. When you get a silent call, I've been informed that it is a computer which dials the numbers and they work on a system that dials say 100 numbers at a time, however there may only be 50 actual people working in the call centre, it is then the first 50 people to answer the phone who actually get to speak to one of the sales staff. If you happen to answer your phone after the first 50 are connected to the call centre staff you will then just get silence because there is no one there for you to connect to, apparently they do this because they assume that not all of the calls will be answered and it saves their staff time calling numbers where no one is in. Don't say I agree with it and I think it is a real pain but do find I feel better knowing that its just that I am not connected to a person rather than thinking there is someone making crank calls or that there is something wrong with my phone.

A couple of things I do which you may want to try is, when I get the first call from any of these companies I tell them straight firmly and politely that I am not interested and I would appriciate it it if they could take my number off their system and not contact me again. I then store the number in my phone and name their number as "Do not answer - sales" This means that if they call again I know who it is calling and I can ignor or reject the call. On most mobiles now you can choose to reject selected numbers so this is always another option.
Another thing I do is answer and when they ask for the person they want to speak to I say its my mum or dad and that I'll get them, this stops me having to have any sort of conversation with them, most of the call centre people are quite polite with you if they think that there is a chance of speaking to someone and making a sale, then I just leave the phone to one side till they hang up, its easy to see on a mobile when the call ends. Have also gone down the route of sarcasim, when they start trying to sell me something I say I'm not interested but have a sofa, fridge, car etc for sale if they are interested, this usually produces a long pause while they think about it. These all work well with double glazing sales although don't seem to get so many now.
Good luck to everyone and am so glad to see that I am not alone.

They called today saying they were from Santander bank, and needed more information from me in order to verify MY identity. I didn't want to give them any more personal info. The man was quite rude. I then called Santander. They confirmed they had not called me ie. the call from this number was dodgy and I did the correct thing in not giving any information.

They called twice today. They told me they were from Santander.  And asked me to confirm my address. I would not do this, as they would not tell me why they were calling. I don't have an account with Santander.

I was called by this company at 20:00. They said they were calling from Santander and requested personal details to confirm my identity. I could hear laughing and shouting in the background. They said they could not say what the call was about unless I provided these. I refused and the caller became very rude and hostile. I checked the number which turned out to be Homeserve, so I called them and complained.

Next day, received a similar call at 13:00. I challenged the caller, saying he was from Homeserve, not Santander, which he denied at first. He then said he "works for Santander at Homeserve's offices". I asked them to never call again.

I then called Santander to make a formal complaint. They confirmed that they have links with Homeserve and that it was a sales call. I explained that I opted out of all marketing on my mortgage application. They said the system did not show this, but that they would correct it. They said they will check my application. If the mistake was theirs they will send me and apology and financial compensation. If the error was my financial advisor's (who completed the application) they will confirm this by letter. I have this call recorded.

Its Homeserve - using contact details sold on by the monopolies who rip us off for our utilities.

I won't deal with creeps who use telemarketing so they are wasting their time

Just had a call from them.  The guy said he was from Santander (my bank).  He asked me to confirm first line of my address and postcode, etc.  Also told me that calls are recorded for quality control purposes.  All very spooky.

I had a few calls this week from them claiming to be Santander, I refused to answer the security checks and instead asked him a few questions for my own security! Such as whats the other persons name on my joint mortgage...all he had infront of him was its a miss, no first name or surname, I then asked him what other products I have with santender and again he said he couldnt tell me as he doesnt have that info!! In the end I told him to send me the info in the post.

Had a few calls that i didnt answer and checked this site so knew who was calling. Eventually answered the phone today. They were offering cover on boiler internal leaks, etc etc. I said I wasnt interested as I already had cover.

He then asked 'how quickly your other provider respond in the event of a gas leak'
i said ' i dont want to get into the details'
he said 'do you not know the details of your cover'
at which point I shut him off

extremely aggressive salesman with a pricing strategy aiming at sucking in the most vulnerable people

    DISGUSTING!!!
