    This number has been calling me a couple of times a week for the last couple of weeks (I am in Victoria Aus). Today I finally answered. It was the Cancer Council looking for participants in a survey. Apparently the phone number digits are randomly selected.

    Hahaha
    What's clear from these comments is that people get REALLY mad about a missed phone call or two. Relax people!

    I got a call from these guys today. They were looking for smokers or recent quitters between the ages of 18-40. I didn't have any in the house so they let me go. Took 20 seconds from start to finish. I came here because I was curious what other people had to say about them. The girl on the other end of the line was nothing short of polite to me.

    I'm with the other guy a few pages back - some of you would benefit from anger management courses (not to mention remedial English). It's a phone call, not a bullet wound. Jesus.

    They called today, I told them sorry I cannot do the survey I am busy. I think he said he is from canteen or something but I could be wrong the male voice asked what state are you from I said NSW and he said that's ok goodbye and hangup. I was going to ask where they got my no from but did not want to be rude.But I should have.Do not give personal information to anyone because you do not know what it will be used for.

    HOPEFULLY MOST OF YOU MISINFORMED/ILLITERATE PEOPLE WILL READ THIS.

    WHY DO THEY SAY THEY ARE DIFFERENT PEOPLE/CALLING FROM DIFFERENT COMPANIES?

    The Social Research Centre is COMMISSIONED by different factions of the local, state and federal governments, as well as other agencies (LIKE THE TAC) to do surveys, mainly on community satisfaction. It's cheaper for Government/ other organisations to hire a call centre to do a research project than to build their own outbound call centre.

    HOW DID THEY GET MY NUMBER/ MOBILE NUMBER?

    TWO WAYS DEPENDING ON WHO THE RESEARCH IS BEING DONE FOR/WHAT IT'S ABOUT

    Through RANDOM DIGIT DIALLING, a computer just takes the first 4 digits of an area and then makes up the last four.

    OR

    The client that has commissioned the Social Research Centre gave them your details (this can include all your contact numbers and email addresses)

    They want to do a survey with you about your satisfaction with some service etc. (TAC, Department of Education, Universities).

    WHY WOULD THE GOVERNMENT WANT TO DO TELEPHONE SURVEYS?

    Obviously Government Departments and Agencies do MANY types of Research, some opting for telephone surveys.
    The Government departments/agencies who hire companies such as The Social Research Centre  say it's a great way to get representative stats;

    But I'd argue (after working at call centres), Government Researchers know that if they hire a polite 19 year old girl to ask you how much you exercise, or if you like immigration, a large percent of people will answer "OF COURSE", so the girl doesn't think you're weird or fat.

    Where as if you were doing it online or on paper, you'd think a bit less about how you appear.

    ========================================================

    THE POINT?
    = THIS IS A LEGITIMATE COMPANY BASED IN MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.

    =BECAUSE THEY DO RESEARCH INTO "SOCIAL ISSUES" LIKE EDUCATION, LOCAL GOVERNMENT ETC, THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO CALL, EVEN IF YOU HAVE REGISTERED ON THE DO NOT CALL REGISTER.  (THEY ARE ASKING IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GIVE YOUR OPINIONS ABOUT HEALTH, EDUCATION, SAFETY ETC, NOT PRODUCTS)

    =THEY DO NOT WANT YOUR MONEY, PROPERTY OR YOUR FIRST BORN.

    =YOUR PERSONAL DATA IS NOT STORED/USED - THIS COMPANY HAS BEEN AROUND FOR OVER A DECADE, NO LAW SUITS, CHECK THEIR WEBSITE ---> http://srcentre.com.au

    =JUST ANSWER THE PHONE AND SAY "NO SURVEYS THANKS" IF YOU KEEP GETTING CALLS ON YOUR MOBILE AND DON'T WANT TO HAVE A SAY

    ==========================================================

    Here is a list of the clients that The Social Research Centre have collected data for, and publications this data has been used in.

    I don't usually answer calls from numbers that I don't know, but I was waiting for a call the other day to confirm an order I placed from a furniture store and I assumed it was going to be them. I was pretty alarmed at first when the girl I was speaking to explained they were doing a survey for the police (It sounded like a scam but explained that there were all of these privacy rules and that I didn't have to give any information if I didn't want to. I decided to do the survey and it was actually really great! None of the questions were personal, and it was pretty clear that the information they were getting was legitimate. The whole thing was over in 5 minutes and the girl seemed so grateful for my participation! I don't know why people are so dismissive of these guys, it seems like they really are trying to improve communities.

    Just tell them that you do not participate in surveys.  I had one from that number stating they were surveying for the Department of  Health &  Aging who I contacted.  They rang me on my Mobile and when I asked hpow they got my number I was told it was generated.  I had a missed call from them today and I left a message to say I wasn't interested.

    Further to my reply, I have just called the number and it is a Research Centre.  It was someone from the  Research Centre that said they had generated my mobile number which I was really annoyed over.

    It would not hurt them to leave a message stating who they are would it. Then maybe more people would pick up the phone next time they call. People do have good reasons (not being a passive-aggressive coward) for screening their calls. Now that I have found out who they are through this web site I will answer next time, but I do not feel I should have to search out phone numbers when they could do the polite thing and leave a message.

    Would you believe if I told you that they called me up in Korea?
    I was in Australia for more than a decade and never had a persistent calling system as this.
    They need an applause
