The same thieving fashion is at it again...does anyone know how to lay a trap for these people to get them busted?

Below is the email that I got - they could at least be a little creative and invent a new story!  Oh well, at least they changed their name.

I need to know that you are serious and have the money to pay before i can come down to London.

just tried to scam us too!  shame on them, thanks for this post it saved us $1400  I guess they thought raising the rental fee would help

Just keep on reporting these listings to Gumtree folks. They do listen and they do take down scammers. Only problem is that the scammers never stop!

The problem with the Western Union rental scammers is that they're not based in the UK hence not much chance of getting them into the UK courts. Since they're thick (most scammers are) these people use hotmail/yahoo email addresses most of the time; so if you know how (or google how to) check up their IP addresses and you'll find where the email came from.

Also if you do get scammed don't just post info about the scam but make sure you leave a contact email (not your normal one because it will get spam) so a group of victims can get together - or create a website. If you meet a UK scammer that might be the only way of getting enough victims together to convince the police there will be enough evidence to investigate and then prosecute.

It can take a long time...over 3 and a half years since I got a group of victims together from a totally different scam but sentencing for that is coming up shortly.

Since you are ready to view,i will plan my time here and make sure am there before you arrive.



The only thing is that i need double assurance, because i want to avoid traveling from Birmingham to london in vain, i can afford my fare, but i can't afford to waste my time.



My Lawyer will get a contract ready for you to sign if you like to take the room after viewing and the keys will be handed over to you immediately after contract has been signed.



Also, receipt of payment will be issued to you after which you'l have to sign the lease agreement form.



I was discussing with my Lawyer about the idea on how i will be so sure that i will not just waste my time to london without acheiving my the aim and she advised that we can work out something via Western Union Money Transfer.



She said that Western Union Money Transfer can actually hold the money as an evidence and surety that her tenant will pay her at least for the first month and deposit. She gave me an option on what we can do since you have the funds at hand which will be explained below:



PROCEDURE:



1) Transfer the amount £800 (1 month rent and security deposit) to any of your family members (wife, dad, mum, siblings) or your friend.



Your name (as sender) to any of your family members (wife, dad, mum, siblings) or your friend (as Receiver) in London or other parts of UK.



2) Scan & Send a copy of the Western Union Money Transfer transaction receipt as a proof of the transaction  or mail me the transaction details. (The money is safe as it is only you that can withdraw since you need a national ID card or International passport)



3) Then, we will meet for viewing.



4) If you decide to take the room, we will go to any local Western Union Money Transfer office for you to pick up the money and pay me. (You don't need to come with cash to view, after viewing we will go together, you will cancel the transfer and withdraw the money to pay me).



5) Keys will be handed over to you after signing the contracts.  



I am pretty sure that the transaction at Western Union Money Transfer office will require some charges, i will definitely refund the transaction charges back to you upon viewing and if you don't see what i sent as pictures of my flat to you, you are free to leave without paying me anything.

I have recieved just the same emails from the above person. I could not afford the amount that she wishes for anyway but I treated her offer seriously until just yesterday (lucky me) my friend told me it might be the Western Union scam! So I didn't even read through the email, skimmed it quickly until I've found the magic words: "western union". I'm thinking of a having a joke with that bloke - I think it's a guy - and have my graphic designer husband prepare a nice Western Union payment receipt.
Anyway beware of that person end don't let her steal your money!!!

We were contacted in response to a Gumtree advert. This time it was for a property in West Hampstead Mews, again with the story of parents in Spain.
The email address used was lorettapinardi@yahoo.de

Checking the hosting of the pictures that were sent led me here.

Thank you to all who have posted here as it saved us a little time and saved some wasted hope.

Just a point, people are posting up the full address of the properties offered but these belong to people who are probably totally ignorant of the scam and more likely would be appalled or at the very least upset to find that their addresses are being used in this way but also subsequently posted in full on the internet. Perhaps just posting the name of the road and the post code is enough.

Does any one know if Gumtree collates the information that is submitted?
