This number called me earlier, he asked for my Mother, who the phone is registered to, but no computer has ever been purchased using her name or registered in her name. I asked who he was, he said he was from PC Masters or something like that, and that my computer needed a health check, and he would tell me manually how to do it, and which applications i needed to access, and he would tell me what to do, i said tell me briefly, he said he wouldnt and he would guide me manually and slowly so that i did everything correctly. He told me everytime my computer has an error it sends them a report and they serve the whole of the UK.

I thought it was very strange from the moment he told me that my computer had problems, when he thought I was my Mother, who doesn't own a computer.

My advice would be to steer clear!! Every person I've mentioned this to has thought the same.  The man on the phone insisted that he could not access my computer without a username and password, and said i could decline, but then urged me to go through with this 'health check'. He also told me I don't know anything about computers and have never ran a 'health check' on my computer. My computer runs fine, and is checked regularly by my boyfriend's dad who is a computer whizz and works in IT. When I told the man on the phone this, he still insisted my computer wasn't working!

And to back up what other people have said, without sounding racist, it does sound like it's in the Indian SubContinent.

Had one today 25/2/11 they nick your money, your card details, install tracker viruses to get your passwords, search your emails (many that have emails in with passwords emailed to you), and take control of your pc to send all your address book 'friends' virus emails at some time in the near future, sell on your name address card details etc etc to other fraudster do I need to go on?

    THINK THIS IS BAD?

WE HAVE NOT HEARD HALF OF THIS YET.

Supposing Bin Laden's mates are behind this, which he probably is, to take control of millions of PCs so that at some time in the future they can extract vast sums on a single hit, causing the whole Financial network to be shut down.

    MI5 What are you doing?????????????????

Got phone call today about 12am, faint line, indian accent , said he was from PC Masters, and had a report from my ISP provider that I had critical errors on my computer. I quizzed him how he knew, etc. He kept repeating same story, not very clever.
Must have my name and address from an old phone book.

I got a call too.  Some chap wanted me to let him into my computer to run a virus check.  He dragged me through some of the logs on the computer that showed errors - just the usual stuff in the event viewer, nothing unusual or worrying.  After a while I told him that my computer was running fine and there was no slowness.  He said goodbye and went!  It doesn't worry me cos I'm quite computer savvy - I only went along with him whilst I was sure it was safe.  But I'd be worried if anyone who wasn't so sure was called.

I received a call from this number at 17.28 28/02/2011.  No reply to several 'Hellos' from me so hung up.  Good to be warned of potential scam.  Glad I checked it!

"Mr. Peterson" rang 26/2/2011 saying he had been sent an "error report" about my computer.
Said he was from "PCMaster" in Luton: when I asked for a number to ring back on he gave "208144", which he said was a Luton number.
CLI gave his number as 09141401414.
When he asked if I was at my computer I decided I'd had enough, threatened him with Trading Standards and told him he was an idiot, at which he started to bluster, then rang off.
I intend to report this to whoever will listen, including "onlinepcmasters" (aka 'PC MASTER.COM LIMITED') of Luton (www.onlinepcmasters.com, tel.02081445602), who may or may not have any connection with this scam.
Since I was not actually duped into losing money by this, and since Trading Standards departments throughout the UK are likely to be facing cuts as a result of our government's attacks on local authorities, I doubt if it will do any good.

I was contacted by phone , using my full name , and the company I was with . Told me my computor was about to crash , as it had many errors on it , went through a step by step routine with him, he finally had control of my computor , then after half an hour routing round , he said he couldn't fix it . Said I needed a service , this service was going to cost me  £79. 99 . I declined . he then offered me a lower rate , I declined again . I was 30mins on phone , and comp , I was shattered when it was over . I am not good at tec. detail . So my son came and sorted me out . changing lots of things . and hopefully I will be ok. Why don't the police put a stop to this hassle . it has made me feel ill .

Had a call from this number at 9.26 9th March.  As described before, there was a delay before the speaker spoke.  He then informed me that that was an error on my computer and I needed to switch it off - it wasn't on at the time.  A similar story to what we have already heard.  It's not the first time I've had this call, but this time I did a 1471 and was surprised to get 1904 1401414. I though it would have said number withheld.  I did as I usually do - asked them a lot of questions, which they couldn't answer.  I asked them where they had got my name and number from and they mumbled something about the Internet.  I reminded them that I was on the Telephone Preference Scheme, but I expect that that doesn't cover foreign calls.  I then instructed them to remove my name from their list and that I never expected to hear from them again.

I've had similar calls with a delayed response at first, several of them about government grants for insulation, but I've not checked the number before.

I've tried to trace the dialling code, but the only one I've found is in China! 0914 Shangluo, Shaanxi province!  Does anyone know where the calls are coming from? Can Trading Standards do anything about this?

I`ve literally just put the phone down from these muppets calling me.

They (a man called Devitt?) asked for me by my name and said they were contacting me about a numerous amount of errors that had been 'reported' on the computer I have that is running Windows. When I asked where he got my number from he went quiet for a couple of seconds and then continued with the 'error' spiel.
I said I don`t think so as I don`t have a computer that runs Windows, I have a macbook.......he put the phone down!!

Just had a call from this number - same story - an error has popped up on a computer registered at your address...used the name of someone who lived here 5 years ago and couldn't tell me mine. Said to turn computer on - it already was - we have 3 computers in regular use at this address.
Decided if they couldn't tell me who i was - i wasn't prepared to trust them into doing anything on my computer. They gave up! If it wasn't a scam - they wouldn't have given up so easily!

Grrr - i hate these calls...esp as i work from home!

It's not just BT that has call centres in India, ecosse, TalkTalk have theirs there too. A lot of people have phone and broadband packages these days so it wouldn't surprise me if lists of phone numbers were on sale which would provide contacts for anti-virus software salesmen.
The other aspect of this scam could be that they are trying to catch people who are out when they call so that you dial 1471 and ring back. 09 numbers are premium rate and you can be charged whatever the owner thinks his or her service is worth. I've read that you can be charged as much as £400 per minute on some 09 numbers, so whatever you do, don't ring back.

Got call about 1600 hours 15/3/2011 from Asian woman.
Usual stuff about faults on computer.
Asks you to type in MSCONFIG etc to reveal stuff which might alarm you.
Leads on to inviting you to visit a website etc.
Best to terminate the call at this point.
Ultimate aim is to access your PC, probably to load Trojans or the like.
No harm done, as long as you don't visit doubtful sites or agree to download something.
