At 09:00 on Friday the 03/12/2010 I got a call on my mobile from a guy with a silent number asking me my birthday - he asked for me by name.

When I wouldn't give it to him he said he would send an SMS with details.

Got an SMS to call 1300 653 554 and ask for BEVERLEY and quote a reference number.

Called them from a silent number and got Gabriella of Collection House debt collection agency.

Quoted reference number and asked what it was about and was told a "private business matter" but wouldn't tell me what about because I wouldn't tell her who I was.

I told her she should know from the reference number and to stop contacting me by phone - they must have my details from the reference number and can send me a letter.

Did you hear back from them? same thing has just happened to me?
was it a matter you needed to deal with or a scam?

It's a company called Collection House who act on behalf of St George if your payments are behind.

I can also confirm this is from St George.

Looks like you need to pay your car loan, morons!

Perhaps you should consider the fact that you should probably be happy that they weren't willing to divulge your personal information about your inability to pay your car loan on time with someone who was potentially not you.

1300 653 554 keeps ringing. One answers, and they ask for a reference number. One asks who or what are they talking about. They insist on a reference number. What reference number one asks, and who are you? They reply they are not allowed to divulge this under Federal Privacy laws. One points out they called me, not me them, therefore they have an obligation to explain why they are calling. No, they do not have to explain anything they reply and end the call. To top the madness off, and noting the comments about the type of caller as per above, one does not have any loans or credit facilities at all and has not for a very long time. What an incredibly unethical entity! Or is this some bizarre scam of epic proportions?

Same here, have got a call from 1300 653 554 and ref; no left was not all there, so i rang and said who are  you, he said he needs ref; no or my name & I said not before I find out who I am giving my information too, he refused to even tell me he where he was from, I said I didn't ask why you were calling I asked where, what business you were from, what your business name was, he said he couldn't tell me under the privacy act... I said well you rang me bus your business is so private you can't tell me you are from, he said no...then I said well what is the point of having a business if it is a secret and hung up the phone.... how hard is it to say I am from ARL collections, or Acme Collections or Collection Place etc., nothing private about that...

And I do have a car loan but it is not in arrears....

Seriously, pay your bills. It's not a scam. They can't give you the nitty gritty without confirming ID due to the legislation surrounding debt collection. If you have any doubts you should look up the guidelines set out by ASIC. The ones that ALL debt collection companies must adhere to so that they can remain in operation. You can argue these guidelines until you're blue in the face but it's the law. Debt collection companies deal with anything from loans, credit cards to overdrawn transaction accounts, internet, phone. A debt is collectable for 6 years- after 6 years the statute of limitations kicks in unless your creditor has judgement (creditors cannot get judgement on certain types of debt) in which case the debt has been recognized by the courts which means it can be collectable for up to 15 years dependent on which state you are in. So although you may think you have nothing in arrears it may be something that has escaped your mind within the last 6 or so years. Just imagine if someone nosy had your phone, answered a call from this number- and the person on the other lines gave them details of your debt without confirming it was you. How embarrassing would that be for you. They're protecting themselves as well as your private information. So the next time you get mad at a debt collector not being able to tell you where they are from just be grateful they aren't wanting to tell your business to everyone.

this number is a legit number used by st george motor finance department.
they are not debt collectors they are a service to let you know you are behind on payments , they are understanding and actually pretty nice , no aggression at all ,  just make sure you pay your bills on time or let st george know if you can't and these phone calls will stop   SIMPLES

Ok so I also received a message to call them back but they called my father-in-law, and asked for me. Is it suspect that they don't have my actual phone number? I have never lived with my father in law. It would seem they are ringing around people in the phone book with my surname.

Also, I have no outstanding payments nor have I ever had any. So I'm wondering if they're even after me or some other Katie.

Also, I have not, not have I ever had any finance with St George Finance.

A company has been calling my parents multiple times over the last few months. They ask for me but don't say what it's about or who they are.  I have not outstanding debts.  This is harassment and illegal.

I get calls from this number and I do not have any debt and have never dealt with St George. The name they say on my message as my first name is close to my surname. How do I get rid of them?
