I am getting these calls that say "this is an important matter and is not a telemarketing call." Our cards are all paid automatically like clockwork, so I know it isn't a credit issue. I checked the AMEX website and did a search for the phone number.  Yes, the number is there, but it seems like it IS a telemarketing call. Here's what it says:

I am struggling financially and would like to keep my Card(s). Is there a program that can assist me through this difficult time?
We can help you if you're having difficulty paying your bill. To learn about programs that can help you pay down your debt with American Express, please go to americanexpress.com/paymentplan or call us at 1-800-592-1160. From outside the United States, please call collect at 1-336-393-1111.

I don't have an American Express account, yet someone from this number calls me constantly, identifying themselves as from American Express.  It is harassment.   How can I stop the calls?  Is it possible to sue them or something so that they stop doing this.

    Quite Contrary
I've been getting calls an average of twice a day for at least a month, from a variety of numbers -- some indicating American Express and others displaying "unavailable." Same message about calling this number. Occasionally there's a testy call for a person whose name is not familiar (and which is probably deliberately unintelligible) nothing that [this person] has not returned their calls. Looks like this has been going on for years.

I've been getting these calls and I don't even have an American Express card.  Needless to say, I don't respond.  They call multiple times a day.  It must be a fraud!

Called the Amex number on my card and they confirmed that this is an Amex number.  They also confirmed that there were no issues with my card, and the number they have been calling isn't even listed on my account!  The rep helping me tried to get thru to them but she was left on hold for longer than I was willing to hold.  Not sure what to tell you - I wouldn't give out any info (you should never do that anyway), but it is a legit Amex number.

It's possible that it's someone "spoofing" a legit AMEX number, even though the actual callers are not legit. I just got a call from that number but no message was left.

This is a HIGH LEVEL SCAM!   It is FRAUD...please read!!!  American Express is confused, and doesn't know how to handle this fraudulent set up.  I've spoken the Amex cust. service 5 times (the # on the back of the card) about this issue.  Amex will tell you that 800-592-1160 is a real Amex #, part of their Credit Services Dept.  What Amex doesn't understand, and they can't seem to confirm, is that 800-592-1160 has been stolen from them.  Scammers are using it for caller ID, and are calling people using the number.  When you call 800-592-1160 back, it sounds just like the real Amex, but it isn't.  They are just trying to get your cc or ssn # and personal info.    I spoke with Amex Credit Services Dept. and confirmed my account is in good standing.  Credit Services has no record of ever calling me, and did not even have my phone # on record.  However I have rec'd 17 calls from 800-592-1160, all saying they are Amex.  They have asked for relatives who have died, and ones that don't live with me, etc.  I've reported the problem to Amex upper mgmt, but they seem unwilling to help...got no follow-up or repsonse from Amex.  We are on our own to deal with these scammers.  Whenever 800-592-1160 calls me now, I use an air horn on them...and hopefully it is destroying their ear drums.

I have recieved 18 calls from this number in the last 30 days. I'm not even 18 yet! I have never answered them, and thought that if I just ignored them then they'd leave me alone. THEY DIDN'T. I am seriously annoyed, next time they call I may answer, only to tell them to STOP CALLING ME.

I get calls from this number multiple times a day.  I have ignored it until now -- I answered to tell them to take my name off the list, but it was a computer generated call.  No voice, just a tone.  How do I get them to stop?
