It's a scam.  A lot like the "Your computer is infected, but buy our software and all will be well," type adware scam.  A waste of time and effort, I knew I shouldn't have picked up.

Call hang up at 211 pdt.  Had a call hang up in April also.  Fortunately where I live the Feds have an ad on advising people to not answer these calls or if they do, hang up on them, they are scammers.

The first time they called I simply said "there is nothing wrong with my computer", and hung up.  That was 3-4 weeks ago.  They just kept calling, 3-4 times a day for the first week, and now 2-3 times a week.  I either don't answer, or simply answer, and hang up without saying anything.  I think they are just calling to harass me now.

I've been receiving these calls for months, and approximately once a week... Last time I told Mr. Howard Smith, who when I inquired said he was calling from "United States", that this was impossible as I don't OWN a computer.  He then implied that someone had stolen my Identity then and would help me resolve the problem for approximately $250 (Visa/MC accepted) by shutting down the computer that was about to get me arrested for what I was apparently doing..  REALLY does anyone buy into this??

They called and said he was from Microsoft and had something to do with anti-something.  I couldn't understand what he was saying due to his accent (India).  Before I hung up, I laughed and told him that I wouldn't be his sucker today.

Like so many have stated before - Do Not talk to these people - Hang up and if you can block their phone number so they cant get through again.

These guys have called me 8 times in the last two weeks. I finally answered and talked to one today. He introduced himself as "Harry Potter." Seriously??

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to make them stop? I mean, eight is enough!

Thanks for the info.  Just got a call from these guys as we were sitting down for dinner.  First of all I told him to call back in 2 hrs. so that I would have time to research this.   I knew it had to be a scam but, I didn't know   if they could tracked or prosecuted.  The only time I have ever been contacted by MS was when registering a new computer OS purchase and they were asking me to confirm info that had already been submitted.

This guy got my 11yr old and said his name was Bobby and wanted to be her Facebook friend and was trying to info from her, she got a little scared and gave me the phone and said his name was Edward and I was being hacked by a hacker and wanted to help me. After I asked numerous questions, I hung up on him. He tried calling right back several times, finally cursing me out in a foreign language on my answering machine. Wow.. What an idiot !

I just got two calls, the first came up on caller ID as "Private Caller." A heavily Indian-accented man told me he was from "security for the Windows computer" and gave me the line about "your IP address has been hacked" or some such nonsense (he was difficult to understand). I asked for clarification and he repeated the "Windows computer" line so I hung up.  About a minute later, a second call from 202-011-3341 came up and it was the same person, so I decided to play along.  Long story short, he transferred me to a "Ryan" (another heavily-accented man) who walked me through a series of steps that ended up at some website called LogMeIn Rescue.  He said he would provide an access code to "protect me from the hackers" for a fee.  He even knew my girlfriend's full name (when they initially called, they asked for her, not me)!  At that point, I had enough and said "I'll call you back, I have to check into something," and he gave me the number 866-539-8674.  A lot of scare talk ("Hackers are using your computer," etc), but they sounded like amateurs.  Unfortunately I could see some people who aren't computer-savvy falling for this nonsense.

A man called me from this # and I knew it was a scam so I played along for a minute. He transferred me to his "supervisor" he asked me to press some buttons and then tell me what happened. I pretended to do so and then told him a screen popped up that said he was a liar. He started laughing and said my voice was sexy and did I want to go on a date. I told him I was going to report him and he laughed again and said I am hot and he wants to do bad things to me. I pretended to shout in a man voice " leave my wife alone" and he hung up!

Just got this call. Everything everyone has said is true. He said my computer was sending out spam email, so I informed him that my computer was turned off and had been for several days. He kept talking and changing his story, so I hung up on him, and he called back, still insisting my system had downloaded a virus and hackers would take control of my computer. I said I don't know who the hell he is, and since I am an engineer for a major computer manufacturer, I could take care of it myself. I hung up again and he has not called back, but judging from what I see on this forum I may hear from him again.

    Phone number 202-011-3341.

Please scroll down to the comment furnished by Pele for an in depth explanation of the scam these people are using in an attempt to extort money from computer owners.    They identify themselves as Microsoft Technicians (with very heavy Indian accents) and they have supposedly identified a problem on your computer.  Hang up on them.

The same approach, I think they are giving up early on anyone who sounds like they have a clue. The guy said my computer was showing up as a threat on their DNS server? I asked for the IP address of the DNS in question - he hung up.
