Comes in as 217-557-6641, but to call 217-785-2698.   Cruel people who prey on innocent people.

The Illinois Department of Revenue website is http://www.revenue.state.il.us.  I think that the one posted hear is possibly part of the scam.

Also the phone number 217 785 2698 is not listed on this phone list

Received a partial message saying to call this number on my work voicemail.  The voice mail system said the number came from my wife's cell number.   My guess is this one is a scam attempt since I have never lived in Illinois.

It is a number from Illinois Department of Revenue , I got a letter and they said to call 217-785-2698 , on hold 20 minutes and said I am done and hung up.  I am gonna wait til they come pick me up.

Just got a call from this number -- on a Saturday, which immediately made me suspicious.

Turns out -- it is the Illinois Department of Revenue. This is the PDF from their website. Look on the second page, right hand side, 3rd number down.

There really is a legitimate phone number from Il Dept Rev: http://tax.illinois.gov/publications/pios/pio-33.pdf It is the number for their collections department however phone scammers can fae this number on your ca;;er ID so beware. The IL Department of Revenue really does have a system whereby yu can securly enter your SSN and press pound to let them access your records.

So can you tell me why they called 6 times in a row within 5 minute intervals. Then 15 minutes later a Chicago number telling me I won a prize called.  And then 5 after that this number called back.  I did get someone finally and promptly told them to [***] right off.     If it's important I'll get a court docket or an officer at my door I suppose

turns out it is a legit line and if they called you, you'd better be calling them back ASAP to find out what you may owe uncle same!

Called three times in 30 min. When answered automatically goes to hold with very static music. When you talk the music stops but as soon as your quite the music starts playing again

They called a couple times per week

I got the same call asking the same and I never received any letters and I've been receiving calls from number for 3 years

While this phone number might be legitimate on the website, that does not mean that scammers are not using technology to phish the number when calling.

I had received several calls around this time last year that there was an issue with my return. When I called the phone number back a recording asked for more personal information than is recommended be left at any time, even by the state. The number called again FIVE TIMES in about an hour and half, same recording. I got my tax return last year without error, confirmed on the website that my return has been processed this year and my refund is pending. I have lived at the same address since 2012 and never gotten a letter, regular or certified mail. My husband has not gotten any mail and our taxes are filed together.

I believe this to be a scam designed to steal info or phish info from the state to make it look legit. I will not be calling back as nothing has happened so far and I doubt anything will.

I have never lived in Illinois or worked there....
EVER.  There is no reason for them to be calling, plus wouldn't they ask for me by name.  The one and only message I received never mentioned my name.  Now I just receive a call from this number with no voice mail left.  Scammers I say!!

Just got this call and you are right, the number is  there for you to call. Likely somebody has learned how to spoof Caller ID and is using that to show the number. Normally, the state or fed will contact you by MAIL as it allows them to keep track of the attempt to contact.

I am guessing that the caller was betting that someone would pick up and then they could work the scam.
