IRS never calls!! they do everything thru letters/mail! never give your info to anyone over the phone

My wife took the call from 217-785-2698.  I looked it up and it is on PIO-33.  Then I looked at a letter the state of IL sent to me five weeks ago (any accountant handled it then)  This number 217-785-2698 is listed on the letter.
It is a valid number.

As we all know the IRS or any governing tax body would not call you and ask for your SSN they would first attempt to contact you by certified mail. I have never received a call from the state or IRS over taxes they just take what they want!!! And anyway how would they get your cell phone number or pay a third party to collect on something that does not cost them anything to take away.

I got this call too and it is a scam IRS never calls you you will get a letter stating what is needed on your return that is the only waythe IRS contacts you NOT by this message, I know I deal with the IRS       THIS IS A SCAM DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION

Received a voice message on 11/19/16 from (217) 785-2698 and was out of town.  Never received any written correspondence and went through steps to register for MyTaxIllinois account to see what the issue was.  I did have a small penalty in 2015 for 2014 underpayment via withholding and thought might be the case for 2015 taxes with letter lost in mail.  After setting up online account and logging in it shows there is no balance due, but the phone number in question is listed on an official state of Illinois document as their collections department. (www.revenue.state.il.us/publications/pios/pio-33.pdf).  Called number today and continued to hold, but call timed out after about 15 minutes.  Then dialed (800) 732-8866, which is their main assistance number, and was told nothing is due on account, but to call (217) 785-2698 (collections) to verify.  What a cluster.

I received a call from 217-785-2679 on 1/11/2017. I didn't answer and an automated voice mail was left. The voice mail indicated that I owed money on a previous tax return and that my case would be sent to collections if I did not return the call to settle it. I was suspicious about the voice mail and read online what other's experiences were with this caller and opted to contact the Illinois Department of Revenue through their toll free number to be sure there were no pending concerns with my return. The Illinois Department informed me that there were no pending concerns on my return and that I had nothing to be concerned about. I'm glad I did my research before returning the call!

Keep getting calls from these jerks

Called me four times within ten minutes, left no voicemail. IDOR would have left voicemail. Frauds

Said they were "tax illinois" and left me a voicemail saying to call them back and have my account number ready.  My taxes are all in order. Big time scammers.

The woman on the phone did call out the number you all are stating is fraud.
She was able to see that someone from their "enforcement" department did call me this morning.
They needed my W2 from 2 years ago.

They have blown up my phone all morning,  but I didn't answer my photos.

My advice is to call the Illinois Dept of Revenue (800) 723-8866 instead of calling this number back.  I received a call from this number and sat on hold for over half an hour before the automated message said "there were no agents available to take the call".  When I called the Illinois Dept of Revenue at just the general 800 number they checked my account and verified everything was ok. From what they said it is a valid IDOR phone number; however, as others have said various hacking shenanigans can happen.  So in summary, do not ignore, but also do not call back unless the IDOR directs you to.

Received certified mail claiming to be from IDOR. Looking to get almost $1000 for returns done over 10 years ago. Returns were joint with spouse, but addresed only to me.

This is a legitimate phone number for the Collection Bureau for IL Dept. of Revenue. I spoke to 3 different individuals at the IL Dept of Revenue and each verified it is a legitimate phone number. Further researched why I received this call (a message was left on my voice mail) and found out they do what's called a "Blaster Call" so they are not calling one person individually, but rather a standard message sent to all on the list to be called.  In my case, I asked if they can do a search by the phone number on which the message was received and I found out it was for someone else who has my phone number listed as theirs. I don't know who the person is, but the state said they would contact the individual another way due to the incorrect phone number.
