- Crime victim advocate| 1 replyThe number is for the Appriss Co. in Louisville, KY. Believe me, this is a legitimate company that provides a nationwide service to keep crime victims safe from further harm by the criminals who committed crimes against them. The service is called Victim Information and Notification Everyday (VINE). Crime victims register anonymously with VINE to receive status and location information about criminals in custody in jails and/or prisons. The jails and prisons contract with Appriss for the service, which is provided free to victims. Google VINE service Mary Byron to find out why this very interesting VINE service was invented. Unfortunately, when crime victims change their phone numbers and do not inform the company, the people who "inherit" the phone number receive the calls intended for the victim. This happens more often because people change cell phones and cell phone providers so often these days. The calls are annoying because the recipient does not have the PIN, which the victim chose for herself/himself. This is not Appriss' fault and the company should not be "shut down." When someone reports unwanted calls to Appriss, they will stop the calls after they confirm that you are not the perpetrator, trying to cancel your victim's safety net. If you or a loved one is ever the victim of a violent or sexual crime, you will see the importance and legitimacy of the VINE service. No, I am not an employee, but I represent victims and understand their need to know where their offenders are. Thanks for your time.

- Not Registered In MarylandI have NOT answered this call, and have blocked it. That being said, I SHOULD have realized what it was, as I DO have VINE service in another state. Makes perfectly good sense to me now. On my REAL VINE service, I get notifications, virtually immediately, when my "inmate" is moved, released, or has a change in status. Let me tell you, it's a lifesaver. And yes, they continue to call until I answer my phone and put in my self selected PIN number.
This was extremely aggravating to me, and I am a VINE user. I can't imagine what it is to those people who do not understand the service of VINE........ all I can do is pray you NEVER have a legitimate need for it.
Perhaps in the future, they will manage to fix whatever glitch is in that system. ANYONE can go on there and enter ANY PHONE number and give it ANY pin number. Or it could just be a mistake. Regardless, as I said, I understand everyone's grievance, truly. With so many marketing schemes out there, it's easy to be annoyed needlessly. Let's hope this gets fixed quickly, so that the truly legitimate calls get to those victims who need them.- Caller: Maryland VINELINK
