They called me today, Sunday, at 11:00am.  Of course, it was a busy signal when I called them back. They are disturbing me. I do not owe anyone any money and I do not want these calls.

MAB is a collection agency for many different companies. Some seem to think that they buy list of deliquent accounts and go after the people. If you just got a new phone number, the person who had it before you probably had a problem. MAB will harrass you until you respond. They can call all they like, they will not get a response from me. Report them to the New York attorney general's office for harrassment.

I received a call from 716-817-6409 at 2:46 pm on Sunday, July 3rd.  We received the same call the previous day.  The caller "mumbled" something and then said to call 1-877-254-0957.  We are on the "no call" list, and I want this to stop.  We do not owe anyone any money if this is a collection call!!!

Not the person who owes them money...
About nine months ago, I also began to get telephone calls from telephone number 716-817-6409 that is identified on my Caller ID as MAB.  When I answer, no one is ever there and then a recorded message comes on and tells me I have received a telephone call from a Mr. Allen who has a very important message for me.  I am to return his call (not toll free!) durning "normal" business hours, Monday through Friday, at a number that is different from the one on my Caller ID.  The calls arrive on my home phone on all days of the week including Sunday.  And all hours from 6:30 AM in the morning to 10:30 PM in the evening.

Concerned about an Identity scam, I obtained reports from all three major credit bureaus and my credit is in good standing and all of my creditors have reported that I am in good standing and pay as required and on time.

How can I get these creeps to stop calling me at all hours of the day and night, on holidays and Sundays???  I don't want to engage in a p*ssing war with some tweek on the phone about whether I owe one of their clients any money or not...

    Anyone have any valid suggestions???

Signed: Not the person who owes them money

    Please make this STOP!
I have just got off of the phone from my FIFTH call to MAB or Mercantile or Mercantile Adjustment Bureau, telephone number on Caller ID 716-817-6409; call back number 1-877-254-0957.  Each time after many, many rings the phone was eventually answered by a real live person.

This company started calling my home a little over a year ago.  As some of the others have stated, the calls were received from MAB at all hours on all days of the week.  And as stated, when we answered the phone we heard a voice message to call back "during normal business hours".

Soon after the first calls came in, over a year ago, my wife and I took the initiative to return the call at the number provided.  And have done so four more times since.

In every case, we were asked to provide our telephone number and were then told they were looking for another person who had a very similar name (different first name; different spelling; different pronunciation), who lives in approximately the same geographic area (within 150 miles of our home), and in the same state.

Each time we were asked to provide the last four digits of our Social Security numbers and how we spelled our last name.  We complied and, each time, were told we were not the person who they were looking for and assured our telephone number would be removed IMMEDIATELY from their database.

Each time the phone calls stopped for approximately four to six weeks and then started back up again.  In each case we listened to the phone ring and listened to the messages that were being left knowing they were not for us.  But when the calls persisted and the frequency increased we became convinced that the calls were not going to stop again until we responded.

Each time we call, we are told the same thing.  This evening I told them that I had heard that story before and the man on the other end told me they were just calling the number they have been provided by their client for this person.  I do not believe this is the case.  How many bad debts can one person have?  I think this is skip-tracing gone very wrong and someone grasping at straws to find the person who has disappeared.  A different spelling of the last name, a different first name, a different address in a different town - what does it take to tell you this is not the same person?  Right now I wish my name were John Smith.

I get calls from this number 2 or 3 times a week. I don't have an answering machine, so I've never heard a message. I also don't pick up the phone for callers I can't identify, I have no idea who this is or what they would want.

This is collection agency of some scam artists. They will try to make you believe you owe them some money which you don't. Rude and obnoxious people. Do not call them, better yet, contact your phone company to have your number blocked from these con artists.

i got the same call and tried this advice and it worked!!!  the advice is pasted below

I had same thing happening.. I suspected a person who had my cell number before me was who they were looking for.  I called the below number and pressed zero "0" and got someone.  I told them what I thought was happening and they asked fom my number.  They were indeed looking for someone different and said they'd take my number out of their calling list.  Who knows...

I have been getting calls from this number for the last week or so on my cell phone. I have been known to get irritated when people I care about invade my space. But my skin crawls when people I don't know invade my space - particularly when they make no effort to explain why they are calling me. It is rude behavior by any standard.

I wouldn't walk up to someone I didn't know, get into their space, refuse to tell them why, and then follow that up with "So, what's your address?". In the same manner, there is no way in hell I am going to give a person my private information when I have no proof they are who they say they are. If they are legitimate, they will tell you who they are representing. I do not talk to anyone who behaves in an ambiguous manner about giving me information, and then asks me for my information - EVER! That is always a sign of long sharp teeth hiding under the sheepskin. It doesn't matter who you are dealing with, 80% of the time ignoring this fact ends in suffering of one kind or another, if not sooner, then later.

They know they are invading your space, they know they are crossing boundaries they shouldn't be, and they know their approach is out of line. They do it for a reason. When you speak to them, ask for their name, and ask who the client is they are representing. If they refuse to tell you this much, then they are threat until they prove otherwise. For all you know, they are criminals. Don't even tell them your name. If they continue to call, make it clear that you will contact the authorities.
