It is a legitimate number. I was left a message to call USAA to verify some transactions. I called the customer service number on my credit card, not the 800-272-9440 number, and USAA verified the message that was left and went over the suspicious activity. The solution is to not call the number on the message, but call the number on your credit card to contact customer service. That way, you know you are not being scammed.

I received a call from 800-272-9440 stating that fraud charges were pending on my USAA master card. Suspicious of phishing activity, I did not call the 800-272-9440. Instead I called the number on the back of my credit and found out that there were pending charges of $1700.00 on my credit card. USAA disputed the charges for me and closed my credit card for re-issue of new card. Thanks USAA..

I am a USAA member and currently Soldier of the United States Army for 25 years (currently a Captain).  I have been a USAA member since 2010.  This number is not a fraud.  As a Field Artillery Officer, I am very detailed and I search for facts. I have a degree in criminal justice and I do not take any fraudulent bait!  I checked my USAA account and indeed I had a security alert and CALLED USAA and it was confirmed!  So just call them. Do not Be an idiot and listen to others.

Real USAA #. I wish people would verify info, rather than posting bad info. The below website lists this number. We called and they wete able to list our charges, after giving phone # and last 4 digits.

USAA fraud prevention. Somebody in Florida punched in my card number for a purchase, and I am in Minnesota, plus I have my card. Just wish my phone ID'd the number. USAA does look out for you.

The automated call is a SCAM!!! I hung up as soon as the automated call was asking me for information about my credit card number and my identity. I immediately called USSA at their toll free number  1-877-762-7256 and verified that my credit card was not compromised. If you get this call and you gave out your your identity please call USAA and let them know that you have been hacked over the phone.

This is NOT USAA!!!  It is not one of their real fraud numbers.  It is a phishing number posing as USAA and you should NOT give them any info.   Please call USAA from the back of your card instead, as you are in control that way.  I verified with USAA that the 800-272-9440 number is NOT ONE OF THEIRS!

Definitely not legit. USAA will call you, your cell, and notify your email if they suspect fraud, and they'll use a known number. So tired of scammers and their complex schemes, posts, and emulated numbers.

This is NOT USAA!!!! Do not give them any information.  They left a voicemail saying I had potential fraudulent activity on my account.  Instead of using the call back number they left, I called the real USAA customer service number and they told me it was totally bogus.

USAA Fraud Detection unit. I just spent $50 at a Walgreens in Chicago tonight, and my usual spending pattern is normally just physical stores in northern California or else Amazon. They asked me questions that verified I am the account holder and I verified with them over the phone that the Walgreens Chicago transaction is legitmate. Now that they know I'm in Chicago on vacation this week, they won't need to flag my Chicago transactions and that means no more calls.

Agreed ... this call back number is fraudulent. I got a security alert text and call after small purchase at CVS. I called it and got nervous. Then called number on my card and they knew nothing about the security alert or the call. And they could not verify the fraud number above that called me. This number is a scam ... ignore and consider changing cards and getting new number. They are collecting and associating your info.

Maybe its not a scam for some but we're getting the automated call, we don't have a USAA credit card or bank account!

This is not a scam. it is USAA's fraud prevention automated number. i got a text yesterday about a fraudulent transaction. i logged into USAA.com and verified for myself that the transaction was there. got the automated call this morning. after reading this page, I got paranoid and called USAA directly. they confirmed they had a record of the call and actions.

having said that, sometimes phone numbers can be spoofed. this is where the number you THINK is calling you isn't really the number calling you, similar to emails. so it's possible that the people who are saying this is a scam got spoofed phone calls. I don't know. but the number itself is legitimate.

I would not trust this number.  I received a voice mail message alerting me of suspicious charges to my USAA credit card.  I called USAA's number on the back of my credit card.  The agent verified my recent charges and all were legit.  I asked her if the number 800-272-9440 was a valid USAA number.  She was not aware of it.  While some people here swear this is a valid USAA number, be on the safe side--DON'T CALL IT!  Call the USAA number that's on the back of your credit card.  Better to be safe than sorry!

SCAM-FRAUD -- use only number on back of your card! Those who say otherwise are members on the SCAM -- these jerks are in the wire -- be alert and toasty!
