This is a legitimate call. They called less than 10 minutes after a purchase on my new MasterCard stating that they were from my bank's (PCMCU in Wisconsin) fraud protection agency. It freaked me out and since I was out running errands I figured I may as well run past my bank to double check. I spoke with a wonderful lady from their in-house fraud department and she checked the number out for me and says it's their 3rd party MasterCard Fraud department calling to just make sure the transaction is genuine. The caller did not ask for any personal information -- He already knew my name and the amount of money I charged, what time I charged it, and where I charged it at. The lady at my local branch assured me it was okay to speak with them, but if I felt uneasy I was always welcome to hang up and call the number on the back of my card to be safe. She stressed that they would never ask for any personal information, all the information they need should be right in front of them.

So, according to her, its a 3rd party account protection company that my local bank uses to insure its cardholders security. Given that I had never used my card before, and made quite a large purchase, I was thankful for the little heads up.

Mike, the poster a few posts above me explains it very well.

Very legitamate.  They called, left message, and I returned call.  All they asked for was the telephone number they called and my name.  They asked about 3 recent debit card purchases and asked if they we valid.  They were and that was it.

I was kind of suspicious too, but I called, and all they asked was my name, the phone number they left the message at, and then they asked me to verify some transactions.

Before calling I checked my credit card statement and found it odd that my previous transactions over the last couple of days weren't showing up. It looked like my credit card was locked.

Low and behold, the transactions that weren't showing up were the ones they asked me to verify.

    It's not a scam.

This call is legit, I verified with my bank.  A charge, for whatever reason, throws up a red flag.  So they call you to verify three different charges, one of which will be the odd one (they don't tell you this though).  They should NEVER ask any account info, just three yes/no questions.

My "odd" transaction was a rock group's fan club membership.  :)

I have received 2 calls from 800-327-8622 in the past 2 days.  Yesterday I did not recognize the number and let it go to voice mail where an empty 2 1/2 second message was left (just dead air).  Today, I picked it up and they hung up immediately.

History:  Yesterday, after Googling the number, I read many of the comments above (Mike and others), and decide to call the number back.  After giving the company, Card Services - part of the Star Network, a phone call they could not locate my phone number or even under my last name and state.  I then decide to call each and every bank that I have cards with and find that none of my cards have any suspicious activity on them.  I then call the 800 number back, just to confirm that they have no information under my phone number or last name, and indeed they did not.

    THIS LEADS TO 2 CONCLUSIONS:

    1) Card Services, a Star Network Company, is a valid company that does valid work protecting people against credit card fraud on behalf of its member banks and financial institutions.

    2) Someone is spoofing Card Services phone number in an attempt to further defraud the people that it calls.  There is no Terry Falcone at Card Services (I verified that with them on the phone).

ALWAYS CONTACT YOUR BANK OR FINANCIAL INSTITUTION TO VERIFY THAT THE CALL YOU RECEIVE FROM CARD SERVICES AT 800-327-8622 IS A VALID CALL.  YOUR BANK WILL KNOW IF THEY USE CARD SERVICES TO HELP PREVENT CREDIT/DEBIT CARD FRAUD.

NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER OR OTHER PERSONAL INFORMATION TO ANYONE OVER THE PHONE IF THEY CONTACT YOU ABOUT CREDIT CARD FRAUD.  IF THEY ARE LEGITIMATE, THEY WILL ALREADY HAVE ALL THE INFORMATION NECESSARY TO HELP DETERMINE IF THE CHARGE WAS FRAUDULENT OR NOT.

Wow, this is actually a legit call. I guess my fly-by-night credit card (1st Financial Bank) that I rarely use has this 3rd party company verify purchases.

I get these phishing calls occasionally and just ignore them, as I did this call. I Google the phone numbers anyway on my caller ID just to see what turns up. A short while later I got an email from Amazon.com saying they couldn't process my card, so I figured what the hell and called this number.

Sure enough, they asked for my phone number (which they already have apparently) then my name which is not very personal information. The service rep read off my amazon purchase amount and I authorized it. A little while later Amazon shot me another email saying they successfully charged my card.

This is a really stupid method, but it is legitimate. It's like waring a ski mask into a bank to pull $20 out of your ATM. It may be legit, but looks suspicious as hell.

    It's Legit, Don't Quit
I got a missed call from 800-327-8622 and a computerized voice left a partial message that said they wanted to talk to me about debit card charges and that I needed to call them back at 800-437-5681.  I first called my bank and checked my account and everything was fine.  I was suspicious because I don't use the number they called with that card/account.  Then I Googled and found this site about both numbers, so decided to call but make sure I gave no info.

When I called, it turns out it was about a credit card, not a debit card like the message had said!  So, checking my debit account of course turned up no flagged or pending transactions!  The heavy-accented woman on the phone asked about my last transactions, all of which were valid ones I'd made.  The call was quick and easy.  All you have to tell them is your phone number (the one they called you on) and name.  (A computer does ask you for the last four digits of your card in the beginning, but you can put in fake numbers and go right to a live person.)

    These numbers are legit.

I use Peoples Bank and I got the same message, called the main branch and when I gave them the number they recognized it as their fraud dept.  Told me that it was legit.  Several banks use this service.  Ussually will get the call soon after making a large (relatively compared to habits) online transaction and they'll verify the last 3-4 transactions.  No worries.

this automated service said that my credit union was trying to contact me, I called my credit union and  said they did not call and if they had it would have been a live person.

I've received a couple calls from this number and the last one they left a message saying that they needed to verify transactions on my debit card and stated my credit union. I called them back and they asked for my phone number and name. Then they named off transactions that I had made using my card since the first phone call on Thursday. All were legit. They even mentioned a purchase I made an hour ago. They are definitely legit.

I had two calls from this number today and decided to research it a bit online. After reading the comments on this site, I decided to call them back. All they asked for was the phone number the message was left on and my name. They asked to verify recent charges to my debit card (I had made some large holiday purchases). They had the dollar amount and company name of the last three purchases I had made online, and wanted me to verify the purchases were valid, and they were. They didn't ask for any other personal information and obviously had enough info on their side to tell me where I had been using my card online. This was a legit call to verify my card wasn't stolen.

I can confirm that this is a legitimate service.  I was hesitant to call back but after reading previous posts, I took a chance.  They only ask for the phone number where the message was left and my first and last name.  They correctly identified the last 4 purchases on my debit card.  I suppose they could have hacked the system at my credit union, but sounded good.  I will call my CU later today to verify.

My bank also didn't know of any fraud service calling from this number. I called the number and they said that they were unable to pull up my account by the same telephone number that they had just called to reach me. I have been a law enforcement officer/investigator for 19 years and am always suspicious and rarely trust anyone.

I received a call twice on this, I called them back and asked if I was having trouble using my debit card yesterday, which I didn't cause I didn't use my card.  They gave me the charges and amounts and that it was in Florida.  I told them I did not use it.  They asked if I recently visted Florida which we did in Feb of '10.  I put them on hold and called my bank and they verified that it is true.  They are having a major faud issue in Florida and that is where the charges are from.  Becareful!

My bank is also closed on Saturdays and Sundays with no one available (annoying). I received a call Saturday morning from this number (which i ignored). Several hours later while trying to use my debit card I discover it has been deactivated. I checked my online banking and found multiple transactions in the last 24 to 36 hours from another state that I did not make. I called my bank (closed) and ended up calling this number back (1-800-327-8622) and speaking with an individual who just by having my name and phone number can run through every transaction on my checking account for the last 3 weeks. He verified which charges are fraudulent and which were not and this 3rd  company that is employed by my bank (and yours Bonnie) was able to deactivate my card prior to any more charges being ran up. They realized that someone was draining my checking account before I did and "looking out for my interest" they shut off my card to prevent any more losses. Thank God they were there while my bank was closed for the weekend. They asked me for absolutely no private or personal information and already has access to all of my transactions for review. I spent years as a skip tracer tracking down people who commit crimes like the one I am a victim too now and this caught me completely off guard. I can not express my gratitude to this company enough.

Legit.  All they did was verify my recent transactions for fraud protection.

The only information they needed was my phone number and name.  If they ask for anything more, it's probably a fake!

This number is legit. I'd liken it to a "watchdog" organization that catches suspicious activity on debit and credit cards. Had been called by them once before, but that time the charges weren't fraudulent; I had made them. This time my card had definitely been compromised. Wasn't home this morning when they called. Called them back..had to give them my phone number where they left the message. When I did that, my info came up and they told me exactly what activity was suspicious, name of my bank and that it was my debit card. Was aware of it as I had seen the charges on my online banking statement early that morning and had already called my bank about it to cancel my card. They asked me about another charge on my card, which they could see, to make sure I had made it. They asked my name..correct spelling..and zip code. Then they filed a report for fraudulent activity on my card. Made me feel good that someone is watching my back..again!
