- Tricia| 1 replysame number called my husbands cell, saying there may have fraud charges on his account a week go. They requested his pin on that account-but it wasn't an AMEX acct we owned. They then stated it was mine-he gave the phone to me, and customer said they would call me back on my cell0they didn't. I called the number-and it WAS AMEX customer service. Weird.

- Fraud SquadPart of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions. Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.
The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people. There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

- DaveI got a voice message making the same comments as posted. As mentioned before the there is no voice prompt to connect to a representative. Only personal information is being requested. Thanks all for your comments which warned me about this scam. When in doubt, always check a change number on your caller ID or voice mail.
- ellen| 1 replyWe got an email today regarding an Amex card number that was changed a week ago because of fraudulent charges. The email asks us to use a "new" email address for Amex. We got suspicious and called the number on the back of our cards. They told us the email and the number listed for Customer Service were fraudulent and asked us to forward the email to spoof.americanexpress. com. I also called 800 528-4800. They immediately asked for my full card number. I entered a fake number to get through to a rep. When I told her I reported them to Amex and will notify police she hung up. The number is listed to a company in NY that seems to be a debt collection agency. I don't have any debt.
- mburt replies to TriciaAll of these posts are quite interesting.
I have an AMEX account. When I am logged on to my account and want to speak with someone about fraudulent charges, this is the number that is shown on the AMEX website. I have also received a call from this number, but would not answer, as it was unidentified. i listened to the voicemail that was left regarding fraudulent activity on my card. They advised to call the number on the back of my card (different than the originating number) to speak with a fraud representative. I had over $2000 in fraudulent charge attempts on my account...the number is legitimately AMEX.
If someone is actually getting all of these odd cards from that number, it can only mean that the number has been hijacked by someone committing fraud (that is why you should ALWAYS call the number on your card and NEVER give protected information over the phone). If you are in fact getting fraudulent numbers by someone that has hijacked a phone number, go to that organization's website, get their fraud report contact information, and report the call to them...they will aggressively pursue the scammers!
Stop complaining...DO SOMETHING! - mburt replies to ellen800 528-4800 IS THE "REPORT FRAUD" NUMBER LISTED ON THE ACTUAL AMEX WEBSITE
- LuckyLokiI got a call from these guys today and in my case IT ABSOLUTELY WAS AMEX trying to verify a recent charge on my account.
Not recognizing the number I didn't pick up, but they did leave a message and the number they asked me to call to verify the charge (800 824 9289) is confirmed as the AMEX automated charge verification service - I even went through their customer service number to double-check before calling it.- Caller: American Express
- KennyAutomated AMEX message asking about a suspect charge. The information they gave was correct, but a false positive.

- CJThis number called me. Caller ID said American Express. The recording said they needed to verify charges on my American Express card and said Press 1 if I was XXX XXX or 2 if I was not... the problem is, they called me by my married name, which is how my home phone is publicly listed in the phone book, and I know for a fact my Am Ex is under my maiden name. I hung up. I believe it was a sales call or a phishing scam.
