my earlier post - I received a text from this number but didn't think anything of it. I then received a text telling me to text 62277 as I had been charged in error. Instead of doing this I came on here and then called 01172050110 and they have told me they will stop these texts and send me a refund for the £2.50. We'll see, but this really hacks me off.

I've now received a postal order for £2.50. They probably hope I won't be bothered to cash it, thieving so and so's are wrong!

Been a week since I texted 'STOP' to 82344 and it has worked so far.

Brian, cheers for the info on TPS but it says on their website...

"The TPS can accept the registration of mobile telephone numbers, however it is important to note that this will prevent the receipt of marketing voice calls but not SMS (text) messages. If you wish to stop receiving SMS marketing messages, please send an 'opt-out' request to the company involved"

So it still seems that we have no option to block unwanted texts?

    I received a similar text

"Uploaded text FUN to 82344 to get your tones. Service by Content-Merchant
Help 01172050110 250pmonth 16+ txt STOP to STOP"

Followed by an additional sent straight after, INFO on the text was:

    http://www.wincast.WapPush/Redirect.asp?TransId=6861130

I didn't open that text, I thought it was suspicious straight away - but that doesn't seem to matter as I've had £2.50 credit taken off my phone.
I tried calling the "help" number, but there was nobody there, just music playing. I've contacted o2 via e-mail (no way in hell am I paying even more to call them up), waiting for a reply there.
I looked up the number to call (the one in the text), found a website with all this under construction b/s - the e-mail address on that site is b/s too.

I won't know for sure if the text thing will stop until 30 days as it's a monthly service.

I still want to know where the heck they got my number from, the only people who have it are friends.

Just called the number given at the top, explained that i did not sign up for any service they said they had put a stop on it now and would refund me by check or postal order, i was a little unsure about giving them my home details for the sake of £2.12 but i thought what the hell its my money i want it back, so told them to post it to the owner / occupier

I called the customer services (0845) no after I was charged for two messages and for my STOP message, totalling £4.  The guy was helpful and I didn't need to threaten Trading Standards.  He's sending me a cheque in the post...

I'm not sure you can report companies to trading standards if the goods aren't of a value of £35, if it isn't a physical item.  Maybe that's how they get away with it?

Got three texts from 82344, one per day, took £7.50 from my credit.  When I rang the 0845 869 3452 number I was connected to a man whose grasp of the english language was tenuous at best.  They said it's for ringtones so I said that I hadn't subscribed to any ringtone service or even used telephone internet - I'm 40 years old - my phone is just that, a phone.  Apparently somebody will ring me within 24 to 72 hours.  Don't expect I'll hear from them again but I'm going to report them.

    EASY SOLUTION TO THE SCAM
This is definitely a scam, it has affected thousands of people over the years and has made the scammers and their front men (the networks) millions!  If you contact your network they will just give you the run-around and tell you to contact the scammers.  The networks know this is a scam, but are happy to enable the scammers to keep going as they take a cut of the proceeds.
If you get any unwanted premium rate texts, you should send an email or registered letter to the customer service department of your mobile network with the following text (replace O2 with your network's name):

" I have received a number of unsolicited premium rate texts from 82344.  I do not have an agreement, contract or relationship of any kind or form with this scam company, hence all texts sent to me were sent illegally as per 2003 E-Privacy Regulations.  The money taken from my account was also taken illegally as per the 1968 Theft Act.  Since my contract is with O2 and it is O2 that has knowingly or unknowingly been complicit in this theft I expect on one the following from O2:

    •    I expect O2 to refund the money illegally take from my account and O2 to take this up with the scammers.
    •    I expect O2 to provide me with a full and detailed audit trail proving that I subscribed for this service and that the money was taken legally.

Please advise me within 48 hours or receipt of this email, which of the two above actions O2 will be taking.  If I do not receive a satisfactory reply within 48 hours I will be making a formal complaint to Oftel, reporting the theft to the Police and initiating legal action.
    "

Its almost a certainty the network will not have any proof of a subscription, they may have details of texts sent or received, but unless they can provide the content of those texts then they can't prove that you subscribed. They will have to refund the money or get the scammers to refund the money (make sure you get a FULL refund).

I did all of the above with O2 and they finally stopped giving me the run-around and got me a refund.  Don't let them fool you into thinking you signed up by accident, or you weren't paying attention, this is nothing but a SCAM.  The scammers buy your number from mailing lists or simply auto generate it from known number ranges.

    Hope this helps, good luck...

    Regards
    Jon

Hi there , right thats it,.I am severely angry at this 82344, this is one of many times that ive asked them to stop sending me messages and they havce charged for every one of them, ive had enough and am going to do something about it,.,i will update this page, I think this is vodaphones responsibility and i think they should pay me the cost or am, going to take them to scourt if i have to, ,.,...
lets all text vodaphone and tell them we are going elsewhere ,who is up for that,,. these people only stop for a month or two and then you get more ,and i topped up with a fiver today and am now using my credit so how much are we paying to ask them to stop several times a year,.
Does anyone know the company who that number belongs to, cheers angus

    Hi Angus,

Don't bother trying to contact the scammers, you don't have a relationship or contract with them so why should you have to runaround trying to get a refund.  Take a look at my previous post (9/5/2010) and send a mail straight to Vodafhone and demand that Vodafhone sort 'their' mess out.

    Good Luck
