I have just discovered that I have been charged £2.50 for weekly text messages for 5 weeks, and I feel robbed! Somebody else on this forum suggested contacting Phonepayplus, which I have done, and they say that they will investigate. Their contact details are on their web site: http://www.phonepayplus.org.uk
If all those affected contact them, it will give them a better view of the scale of this scam and the profits that the scammers are making on our behalf.

I spoke to a lovely gentleman from a company called WIN today who advised me that 82344 is a shared shortcode and there are over 500 companies that send messages VIA this number.
The best thing to do is call 0845 130 9911 which is a local rate number and it will tell you exactly which company the messages have come from! it will even connect you to them, so if you can put up with the automated service, you will find out who it is :D

Update to message i posted on 23rd May 2011. No refund ! what a suprise and then more messages until no credit left on phone.
I contacted 02 who were extremely helpful and told me to text STOP at no cost to myself, was on phone to 02 for ages and they assured me they would sort it.
True to their word 02 contacted me again next day and asked how much i had lost off my credit. The chap then said i will call you back.
He did .5 minutes later and gave me a top up code.
I received the credit i had lost and it was rounded up to the nearest £ so got more.
I cannot praise 02 enough for the way they handled this i only wish i had gone to them in the first instance. So follow my example hopefully we can stop those scammers for good!

I had the same problem with these text messages costing me £2.50 a go. I emailed orange who in turn managed to track down the company (marketbybrand.com) and email them on my behalf.

The comapy called me directly, they couldn't provide any explanation as to how and when I supposedly signed up to this service but offered me a full refund by cheque. We'll see if it turns up.

Have received a bill for texts from 82344  totalling £20.08, I never actually received these texts, but our provider will not have it.  This number is a competition service, they I text an entry to win an Iphone, why would I do that when I already have one???
Apparently to stop them you need to text  STOP to the number 82344 according to my provider that text cost me 08pence.

To contact the company direct they are WIN(Wireless Information Network) ltd
Telephone     Graham on 01494 750 500   he is rather snotty especially when I told him what I thought of the way his company does business, I am also going to get in touch with Watchdog.

    Good Luck

    Hi Chrissie,

I simply believe that what you are saying is completely false about Graham, He dealt with my issue with 82344 in the uttermost fasion, was really nice to me, and even offered to give me the contact details for the company that operate the service.

It turns out that the messages that I received started when I sent the word "IPHONE" from my phone to 82344. - Silly me, I forgot about this when my bill come in. When I recieved my bill, I called them and they had advised me that there was a message from my phone but couldnt tell me what the content was, hence where I got the contact number for this gentleman.

May I suggest that you contact your network operator to see if there were any messages sent from your phone and if so the dates and times and even what the messages say!

After visiting PhonepayPlus's Site, these services require a form of opt-in, usually via a text message  - So its more than likely been you that has sent a message in :D.....
    I Hope it helps.

    Love

    Julie xxxx
